. NEW DELHI: Poll results show Congress saw a notable number of Muslim candidates register victory in the assembly elections, with 18 out of 19 party MLAs in Assam being Muslims. Kerala’s victorious UDF has 30 Muslim MLAs, with eight from Congress and the rest (22) from its ally IUML. The two winning Congress candidates in Bengal are both Muslims. In Tamil Nadu, one Muslim candidate from Congress won, report Manash Pratim Gohain & Ambika Pandit .Assam results show the opposition’s limited success in the state was concentrated in Muslim-majority regions, with 22 of its winning candidates belonging to the community and most victories coming on seats with high Muslim population.The demographic pattern is clear. NEW DELHI: Days after the assembly polls, Suvendu Adhikari’s personal assistant Chandranath Rath’s killing in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas triggered a political storm in the state.Rath was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants, who tailed his vehicle, forced it to stop and opened fire in full public view at around 10.30 pm before fleeing.The incident occurred in Madhyamgram’s Doltala area while Rath was returning home.The killing comes at a time when Bengal remains politically on edge after one of the most bitterly fought assembly elections in recent years, with both the BJP and the TMC accusing each other of intimidation, attacks and retaliatory violence across several districts.What we know so farMotorcycle-borne assailantsAccording to eyewitnesses, Rath’s car was first stopped at the Doharia junction near Doltala by a four-wheeler, following which a rider on a motorcycle approached the vehicle and began shooting.The occupants of the four-wheeler left the vehicle at the spot and fled on the two-wheeler.Rath sustained critical injuries in the firing and was taken to a nearby private hospital. According to the party, he was declared dead by doctors on arrival.“The victim was brought dead with two bullet injuries to his chest, which pierced his heart, and another bullet hit his abdominal area. There was no opportunity to resuscitate him,” a doctor said.As news of the killing spread, hundreds of BJP supporters gathered outside the hospital, shouting slogans against the ruling TMC and demanding the immediate arrest of those behind the attack.‘Assailants wanted to deliver a political message’The atmosphere outside the medical facility turned emotionally charged as senior BJP leaders, newly elected MLAs and party workers rushed there through the night.A heavy police contingent was deployed outside the hospital and along Jessore Road to prevent any untoward incident.Supporters broke down in tears, while party workers accused the ruling dispensation of unleashing “terror” after the assembly election results.Adhikari also arrived at the hospital around midnight.State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya alleged that the incident was a planned and targeted attack and that the assailants wanted to deliver a political message.“This wasn’t unexpected. We do not know how much further TMC’s culture of violence will stoop. This is evidence of the total criminalisation of politics now prevailing in Bengal. This was a planned and targeted attack. By killing the PA of the outgoing leader of opposition, the assailants wanted to deliver a political message,” Bhattacharya said.“People should take to the streets to protest this and stop this never-ending violence. We will take firm steps in accordance with the law after our government assumes power,” he added.BJP leader and MLA-elect Kaustav Bagchi said that Rath’s body will not be cremated until the criminals are identified.“This was a targeted attack. The assailants followed Rath’s car for a long time before pumping him with bullets. This is the handiwork of Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. We will not rest until the criminals are identified. We will not cremate the body till then.”“We have been preaching peace, but TMC has made the biggest blunder,” newly elected BJP MLA Tarunjyoti Tewari said.TMC demands CBI probeMeanwhile, the Trinamool Congress also condemned Rath’s killing.“We strongly condemn the brutal murder of Chandranath Rath in Madhyamgram tonight, along with the killing of three other TMC workers in incidents of post-poll violence allegedly carried out by BJP-backed miscreants over the last three days, despite the Model Code of Conduct being in force,” the party said in a statement.“We demand the strongest possible action in this matter, including a court-monitored CBI probe so that those responsible are identified and brought to justice without delay,” it said.Wider political conspiracyDGP Siddhnath Gupta, who visited the hospital, said the police had recovered used cartridges from the crime scene.“The small car, which was also used in the crime, has been seized. NEW DELHI: To enhance preparedness for radiological and nuclear exigencies, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday opened a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) field training and demonstration centre at Burari plains in Delhi.Inaugurated by DRDO chairman Samir V Kamat, the centre will be a unique DRDO-CBRN-centre of excellence comprising state-of-the-art facilities. NEW DELHI: To enhance preparedness for radiological and nuclear exigencies, Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) on Wednesday opened a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) field training and demonstration centre at Burari plains in Delhi.Inaugurated by DRDO chairman Samir V Kamat, the centre will be a unique DRDO-CBRN-centre of excellence comprising state-of-the-art facilities. Sergio Gor NEW DELHI: With US secretary of state Marco Rubio all set to visit India this month, ambassador Sergio Gor said Wednesday he’s looking forward to welcome his “good friend” to India. Rubio said the US deeply values its growing partnership with India and is excited to build even stronger ties that will benefit both nations and the world.Rubio is likely to arrive in Delhi on May 24 for a two-day visit. Supreme Court NEW DELHI: A nine-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant Wednesday cited caseload to ask if it is prudent for the court to spend enormous time to resolve religious right disputes. The poser came during the course of hearings on the challenge to the Supreme Court’s verdict allowing women of menstruating age to enter the Sabarimala shrine and when senior advocate Darius Khambata, appearing for Parsi woman Goolrokh M Gupta, argued that individual fundamental right to freedom of conscience and to practise, profess and propagate religion can’t be annihilated by a denomination’s diktat to excommunicate her upon marriage to a non-Parsi man as she is deemed to have embraced her husband’s religion. There are almost 93,000 cases pending with the Supreme Court at present. The bench of CJI Kant and Justices B V Nagarathna, M M Sundresh, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Aravind Kumar, A G Masih, Prasanna B Varale, R Mahadevan and Joymalya Bagchi — hearing the ‘faith vs fundamental right’ debate — asked whether an inter-faith marriage under the Special Marriage Act can be classified as a religious activity. Justice Nagarathna said under Hindu customs, marriage is sacrament, in Islam, it is a contract, while under the Special Marriage Act, it is a statutory marriage, and asked if anyone is aggrieved by violation of her or his rights because of marriage, would it not be prudent to approach a civil court seeking protection of the right. Khambata said that if it is a purely religious matter, the disputing parties need not approach SC, but a woman who loses her right to enter a religious place because of her marriage can approach a constitutional court for redressal. Justice Sundresh said, “You are asking us to enter an arena where we must decide competing rights of two individuals or individual vs denomination, that is the group of followers’ rights. How does it fall within the purview of judicial scrutiny by constitutional courts? We have thousands of cases pending. Should we not devote time to that? Competing rights and claims can be decided through civil suits.” As on Wednesday, there are 92,926 cases pending in SC— 72,386 civil and 20,540 criminal cases. Of these, 36,936 cases are less than one-year-old.
