NEW DELHI: A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s historic victory in the West Bengal assembly polls, state party president Samik Bhattacharya on Tuesday urged the administration to take strict action against those perpetrating post-poll violence.Talking to reporters, Bhattacharya warned that BJP workers found involved in such activities would be expelled from the party.”Post-poll violence will not be tolerated in any form. If anyone from our party is found involved, we will be compelled to remove them,” he said.”I would like to urge the administration to take necessary action wherever such incidents occur. This is precisely why the people of West Bengal have chosen the BJP,” he said.He also accused TMC workers of attacking their own candidates.”Two hours after the results, a TMC candidate called up Dilip Ghosh to save him. Dilip Ghosh asked him for his whereabouts, upon which he said that he was in the party office. He told the candidate that those people were with him during the elections,” he said.”The candidate said that those are TMC people but are now coming to beat him up. This was bound to happen. TMC was not a political party,” he added.Meanwhile, news agency PTI reported that a high-level meeting was held at the BJP’s Bidhannagar office, attended by central observers and senior state leaders, to discuss measures to prevent violence and maintain law and order in the post-result scenario.The discussions also focused on ensuring that there is no repeat of the violence reported after the 2021 assembly elections, when the BJP had accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of targeting its workers.The BJP has secured 207 of the 293 seats where polls were held, securing a two-thirds majority and paving the way for its first government in West Bengal. KOLKATA: In at least 82 assembly seats in Bengal, the candidate in the third position secured more votes than the winning margin, indicating that a sharp vote split between the second- and third-place holders took the winning candidate past the post.For example, Congress candidate Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury lost the Behrampore seat to BJP by 17,548 votes. The Trinamool nominee, who came third, secured 49,586 votes, nearly three times the winning margin, exemplifying how BJP benefited from the split in votes between Congress and Trinamool.Several heavyweight Trinamool candidates, too, lost because of a similar vote split. And, in most cases, CPM played the spoilsport.For instance, Chandrima Bhattacharya would have most likely won Dum Dum North for Trinamool had CPM not fetched 38,428 votes to finish third. BJP won the seat by 26,404 votes.Aroop Biswas would have easily defeated BJP’s Papiya Adhikari in Tollyginge had CPM not taken away 30,335 votes. BJP managed to win here by 6,013 votes. Likewise, Trinamool lost Jadavpur to BJP by 27,716 votes. CPM’s Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya finished third here with 41,148 votes.In Cossipore-Belgachia, Trinamool’s Atin Ghosh lost to BJP’s Ritesh Tiwary by 1,651 votes. CPM polled 11,151 votes here to finish third. In Behala West, Trinamool’s Ratna Chatterjee lost to BJP’s Indranil Khan by 24,699 votes. CPM finished third with 30,676 votes.In Uttarpara, Trinamool’s Shirshanya Bandyopadhyay lost to BJP’s Dipanjan Chakraborty by 8,685 votes. CPM was at the third place with 17,136 votes. In Chandannagar, Trinamool’s Indranil Sen lost to BJP’s Deepanjan Kumar Guha by 13,441 votes. CPM again finished third with 22,760 votes.For Trinamool, the vote split worked in its favour in Kamarhati, where Madan Mitra defeated the BJP candidate by 5,643 votes because CPM secured third place by polling 20,203 votes.Similarly, in Domkal, the only seat that CPM won, Congress fetched 30,453 votes to finish third, allowing the Left party to defeat BJP by 16,296 votes. In Noapara, BJP’s Arjun Singh won with a margin of 17,656, while CPM came in third position with 17,696 votes. NEW DELHI: As part of efforts to intensify Modi govt’s ‘Act East Policy’, Navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi has held a meeting with Myanmar Navy’s commander-in-chief Admiral Htein Win in Naypyitaw and discussed growing bilateral ties and enhancing maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region.Their meeting also focused on advancing naval engagements between both countries, including on maritime engagement opportunities, capacity building, training exchanges and mobile training teams (MTTs), hydrography and greater interoperability.Admiral Tripathi is on an official visit to Myanmar from May 2-5.“As part of the ongoing visit to Myanmar, Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, CNS, held discussions with Adm Htein Win, Commander-in-Chief of Myanmar Navy at Nay Pyi Taw on 04 May 26…The meeting marks a significant milestone to foster deeper navy to navy ties and enhancing maritime security in the Bay of Bengal region — MAHASAGAR,” the spokesperson for Indian Navy said on X.On Monday, Admiral Tripathi met Myanmar’s defence minister General Htun Aung and discussed the current canvas of bilateral ties.In a related development, Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) Sagar entered Yangon Harbour on Monday as part of India’s ongoing maritime engagement in the region. NEW DELHI: Taking a crucial step towards boosting the country’s nuclear energy programme, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has sanctioned “major equipment erection” at Units 5 and 6 of Kudankulam nuclear power plant (KKNPP).The permission, granted on April 30, marks a significant shift from civil construction to core plant development by allowing Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) to install vital reactor components, such as reactor pressure vessel, steam generators and coolant pumps.“Landmark progress at Kudankulam. India’s nuclear energy programme achieves another decisive milestone,” NPCIL said on X. It further said, “The approval followed from comprehensive multi-tier safety reviews by AERB, reaffirming adherence to stringent national regulations and global benchmarks, including IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) standards.”Department of atomic energy said, “This permission was issued after satisfactory completion of multi-tier safety review of design of the units against the safety requirements specified by AERB as well as assessment of the progress of civil construction activities so far, under the earlier permission issued in April 2021 for ‘First Pour of Concrete’ (FPC).”Kudankulam project site has six units of pressurised water reactors of VVER design, being established in technical collaboration with the Russian Federation. The first two units (KKNPP Units-1&2) have been in operation since 2013.
