Konkona Sen Sharma says that despite some progress in OTT and smaller films, big-budget movies still prioritise male heroes. After 25 years in the industry, she believes meaningful roles for women remain limited. She credits streaming platforms for change and is currently promoting her upcoming series Welcome to Khoya Mahal.

Konkona Sen Sharma is among the most versatile actresses in the film industry, with several acclaimed films to her credit, including the recent Anurag Basu directorial ‘Metro… In Dino’. Known for choosing roles that highlight her range and avoid typecasting, Konkona has consistently carved a unique space for herself. After 25 years in the industry, the actress shared that it still hasn’t become easier for women to land more substantial roles.

Konkona Sen Sharma says big films still favour male heroes

Reflecting on whether the industry has changed over the past 25 years, Konkona said in an interview with News18, “In some ways, I think, to a certain extent, perhaps in smaller-budget films or OTT films, to a certain extent, yes. But if you follow the money (laughs), then you will see that larger films will inevitably have larger-than-life male heroes.” She added that this trend is not a recent development but something that has persisted over the years. “I don’t think this is necessarily a problem of today, but I think it’s kind of been like this for many, many years. Every year, you will find a handful of interesting films, films that don’t follow trends or a certain formula, but those kinds of films are few and far between.”

But you will see mostly older women in such roles, by and large, except for some exceptions.”
