NEW DELHI: Punjab Police have registered two FIRs under non-bailable sections against Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak in separate districts of the state, days after he switched from the Aam Aadmi Party to the BJP as part of a group of MPs merging with the ruling camp in the Upper House. The timing of the FIRs has triggered a political row, with the BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal alleging “political vendetta”. Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma accused the AAP government of misusing the police to target opponents. In a post on X, Sharma said, “There is no law in Punjab; now, political vendetta is in effect. Bhagwant Mann and Kejriwal’s fear exposed. BJP Punjab will not tolerate this bullying and dictatorship. Those who build weapons against opponents of the law will be fought legally and democratically. We will not be afraid; we will not bow down.” Echoing similar concerns, Shiromani Akali Dal general secretary Bikram Singh Majithia accused the AAP of selectively targeting former allies. “Hero to Zero…Selective targeting of those who fall out with the Aam Aadmi Party. Sandeep Pathak was once a trusted aide of Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal, a key power centre. If he was wrong, then he was following his bosses, Arvind Kejriwal and Bhagwant Mann. NEW DELHI: Clashes broke out between supporters of the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in South 24 Parganas during repolling in West Bengal on Saturday, with allegations emerging that some voters were being prevented from casting their ballots. Security forces were deployed in large numbers to bring the situation under control and ensure voting continued.The repoll is being held in 15 polling stations across Magrahat Paschim and Diamond Harbour constituencies after the Election Commission of India declared the April 29 voting in these booths void following reports of irregularities. Fresh polling is being conducted from 7 am to 6 pm under heightened security arrangements.According to officials, 11 booths in Magrahat Paschim and four in Diamond Harbour are undergoing repolling based on reports submitted by returning officers and election observers. The decision was taken under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.The repoll follows allegations of EVM tampering and voter obstruction in parts of Diamond Harbour’s Falta segment. BJP leaders claimed that voters were unable to select their party due to interference with the machines.In a post on X, BJP leader Amit Malviya said, “This is what Mamata Banerjee was defending when she spoke up for Jehangir Khan, a criminal contesting on a TMC ticket from Falta in Diamond Harbour. In several polling booths, the option to vote for the BJP has been blocked using a tape, effectively preventing voters from exercising their choice. This is the so-called ‘Diamond Harbour Model,’ the same template that helped Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee secure his Lok Sabha seat.”Earlier, West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal had said complaints regarding such incidents would be examined. “If reports of taping of any button come in, that should be verified and noted. If true, those booths will go for a repoll,” he said.Authorities said extensive security arrangements have been put in place to prevent further disturbances, with central forces deployed at sensitive polling stations. NEW DELHI: Clashes broke out between supporters of the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in South 24 Parganas during repolling in West Bengal on Saturday, with allegations emerging that some voters were being prevented from casting their ballots. Security forces were deployed in large numbers to bring the situation under control and ensure voting continued.The repoll is being held in 15 polling stations across Magrahat Paschim and Diamond Harbour constituencies after the Election Commission of India declared the April 29 voting in these booths void following reports of irregularities. Fresh polling is being conducted from 7 am to 6 pm under heightened security arrangements.According to officials, 11 booths in Magrahat Paschim and four in Diamond Harbour are undergoing repolling based on reports submitted by returning officers and election observers. The decision was taken under provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.The repoll follows allegations of EVM tampering and voter obstruction in parts of Diamond Harbour’s Falta segment. BJP leaders claimed that voters were unable to select their party due to interference with the machines.In a post on X, BJP leader Amit Malviya said, “This is what Mamata Banerjee was defending when she spoke up for Jehangir Khan, a criminal contesting on a TMC ticket from Falta in Diamond Harbour. In several polling booths, the option to vote for the BJP has been blocked using a tape, effectively preventing voters from exercising their choice. This is the so-called ‘Diamond Harbour Model,’ the same template that helped Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee secure his Lok Sabha seat.”Earlier, West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal had said complaints regarding such incidents would be examined. “If reports of taping of any button come in, that should be verified and noted. If true, those booths will go for a repoll,” he said.Authorities said extensive security arrangements have been put in place to prevent further disturbances, with central forces deployed at sensitive polling stations. TVK leader KA Sengottaiyan NEW DELHI: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader KA Sengottaiyan on Saturday said the two-year-old party would win at least 180 of the 234 constituencies in the recently held Tamil Nadu assembly elections.He added that TVK chief, actor-politician Vijay, would become the next chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Making his electoral debut, the Tamil superstar contested from Tiruchirappalli East and Perambur constituencies. He had joined TVK from AIADMK ahead of the April 23 assembly polls.Sengottaiyan also ruled out any possibility of a post-poll alliance, saying the party would secure a clear majority.“There is no situation where there is no majority. We will win 180 to 200 seats. That is the target,” he stated, adding that he had witnessed “strong public support” during his recent travels.Polling for all 234 seats was held on April 23, with TVK contesting against the ruling DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA). The main opposition bloc was the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the AIADMK and the BJP.Most exit polls have predicted a return to power for the SPA, with TVK expected to win fewer than 10 seats. People Pulse projected 2–6 seats for TVK, while Matrize estimated 0–6 seats.
