DMK chief MK Stalin says elections may be soon in Tamil Nadu NEW DELHI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin on Sunday questioned the stability of actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government, claiming it may not complete its full five-year term and urging party workers to prepare for elections that, he said, could be announced at any time.Stalin made the remarks while addressing a membership induction programme at Sri Vaaru Marriage Hall in Chennai’s Vanagaram, where more than 5,000 leaders and workers from various political parties joined the DMK under the leadership of former AIADMK minister Benjamin.”Let us look at the reality. The present ruling party did not win a majority to form a stable government on its own strength,” news agency PTI quoted the former chief minister as saying.”This is a shaky setup. We do not know at which junction or turning this vehicle is going to lose its balance and come to a sudden halt. Therefore, I am telling you, elections can come at any time. It could happen in three months, or it could happen in six months. We cannot afford to wait for a five-year cycle,” he added.Calling on the newly inducted members and party cadre to remain election-ready, Stalin said the DMK should begin groundwork immediately instead of waiting for poll dates to be announced.”I call on party workers to gear up for the electoral battle. Elections could be announced at any time. The election may come in three months or after six months. Whenever it comes, we must be 100 per cent prepared. From this moment onwards, work sincerely for the party’s victory, and your recognition will come to you,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying.He further said, “We must be 100 per cent prepared for any political eventuality. We cannot start preparing after the election dates are announced. Let this mega induction event serve as the moment we take a solemn pledge to begin our field work for the DMK’s thumping return to power, starting this very minute.”The remarks come amid shifting political equations in Tamil Nadu. On Saturday, Vaiko’s MDMK walked out of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and extended its support to the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.TVK, which fell short of a simple majority in the local body council, later secured the required numbers with the support of the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. Flash floods trigger landslides in Arunachal (PTI)Flash floods trigger landslides in Arunachal (PTI)12 NEW DELHI: Flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall has wreaked havoc across parts of the Northeast, submerging roads, damaging homes and triggering landslides in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Dramatic visuals from Ledum village in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district showed floodwaters inundating roads after a river overflowed, while survivors recounted how the deluge “washed away everything.”The first wave of floods in Assam has affected more than 22,000 people across six districts following days of heavy rainfall in the state and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, officials said. Floods and landslides have also caused widespread damage in several parts of Arunachal Pradesh, inundating houses, disrupting infrastructure and prompting rescue and evacuation operations.Meanwhile, the death toll from a rain-triggered flash flood in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district rose to three after the body of a missing man was recovered in the adjoining Papum Pare district on Sunday. Authorities said 128 households have been affected in the district, while a relief camp set up at the NEEPCO campus is currently sheltering 60 displaced residents as search and rescue efforts continue.ArunachalA video captured a massive landslide at Siji Block Point in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Siang district, raising fears of a dangerous flash flood.Visuals from Possa village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Keyi Panyor district showed widespread destruction caused by a cloudburst-triggered flash flood on June 24 that killed one woman, while four others remain missing.NDRF teams are conducting search and rescue operations in Yazali, Keyi Panyor district, to trace people missing after a cloudburst-triggered flash flood on June 24 that claimed the life of a woman.”Five people were reported missing in the NEEPCO area. The SDRF, district administration, and police initiated a search operation…The NDRF team arrived yesterday and is searching. We are utilising special equipment, canine units, and boats to search various locations…Additional teams equipped with specialised gear are set to join us today, so we will likely intensify the search operation by evening,” ANI quoted deputy commandant Anand Kumar Patel as saying.AssamVisuals from Assam’s Dhemaji district showed several areas submerged after continuous heavy rainfall triggered a flood-like situation.Heavy rainfall and severe riverbank erosion caused a partial collapse of a railway bridge over the Simen River in Assam’s Dhemaji district, prompting authorities to suspend train operations on the affected route, a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) official said. According to the NFR, more than 110 mm of rainfall in and around Dhemaji triggered flooding and extensive bank erosion, affecting the bridge between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations. The bridge, originally built in 1965 and later converted to broad gauge, was structurally sound, but the erosion washed away a significant portion of the riverbank, destabilising one of its supporting piers.Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he is closely monitoring the flood situation in Dhemaji district and has directed two senior cabinet ministers to camp in the flood-hit region to oversee relief and rehabilitation efforts.”Since the flood situation has unfolded in Dhemaji, I’ve been closely monitoring the situation. We are deeply saddened by the impact it has had on the lives of our people and in this difficult time, we firmly stand with them. Udhayanidhi Stalin, TN CM Vijay, MK Stalin (File photo) NEW DELHI: DMK president M K Stalin and leader of the opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin on Sunday intensified their attack on the ruling TVK government, accusing chief minister C Joseph Vijay of administrative failure, deteriorating law and order and turning the Tamil Nadu Assembly into a “film shooting spot.”The remarks come days after Vijay mocked Udhayanidhi in the Assembly, saying he was searching for his “appa” (father), referring to M K Stalin, who was absent from the House following the DMK’s defeat in the Assembly elections.Responding to the jibe, Udhayanidhi said the people of Tamil Nadu were now searching for something far more important.”Tamil Nadu once had governance. Today, the people of the state have begun searching for where it has gone,” he said while addressing a wedding function in Pudukkottai.At another function in Orathanadu in Thanjavur district, Udhayanidhi said the government’s failures had become evident within a month of taking office.He alleged that ordinary citizens were struggling with power cuts, water shortages and worsening law and order.Referring to Vijay’s remarks in the Assembly, Udhayanidhi said Perambur voters were searching for their MLA, while people across Tamil Nadu were searching for electricity, water and public safety.He also criticised the functioning of the Assembly, saying it resembled a film set rather than a legislature.”It makes us wonder whether this is an Assembly, a cinema theatre, or a shooting spot,” he said.Udhayanidhi alleged that the chief minister appeared more focused on camera angles than governance and accused him of staging a performance every day.He further claimed that the TVK government continued to target the DMK while welcoming “corrupt forces”, which, he alleged, became “pure forces” after joining the ruling party.Defending flagship welfare programmes introduced during the previous DMK government, Udhayanidhi said schemes such as the ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ and ‘Puthumai Penn’ remained popular among the public and alleged that the government was struggling because it was unable to discontinue them.Calling on party workers to remain united, he urged them to take responsibility for resisting what he described as the government’s “anti-people activities.”Addressing a separate event at the DMK headquarters in Chennai, former chief minister M K Stalin claimed Tamil Nadu was in danger of “descending into a state of deep mess” within a month of the change in government.He alleged that industries were reluctant to invest in Tamil Nadu and were instead choosing other states.”Industrial units are reluctant to invest in TN and are preferring other states. There are sexual assaults, burglary and murders everywhere. Saddest part is that ruling party members are accused in many of the crimes,” Stalin said.He claimed the state had witnessed rapid development during the DMK’s tenure, attracting global investments and generating employment through welfare and development programmes.”But now there are power outages everyday while farmers in the delta are in distress,” he said, alleging that the government was running the administration in a “‘take diversion’ mode.”Stalin also claimed that people had realised they had made a mistake by voting for the TVK and said both those who voted for the ruling party and those who did not were now suffering.Warning party workers to remain prepared for a fresh electoral battle, Stalin said elections could be held earlier than expected.”Elections could be there anytime, in three months or six months. Medical device makers set for quicker clearances NEW DELHI: Manufacturers of blood pressure monitors, cardiac stents, hip and knee implants and other medical devices could soon get regulatory approvals up to 25 days faster, with the Centre proposing changes to streamline the licensing process while retaining existing quality, safety and performance standards. Union health ministry has issued draft amendments to Medical Devices Rules, 2017, proposing to shorten manufacturing licence approval timelines and prescribe fixed timelines for every stage of regulatory scrutiny. The draft notification has been placed in public domain for stakeholder comments. Under the proposal, time taken to grant manufacturing licences for Class B medical devices, including blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters and hypodermic needles, would be reduced from 140 days to 115 days. For Class C and Class D medical devices, including cardiac stents, hip and knee implants and other orthopaedic implants, the approval timeline would be cut from 105 days to 90 days.Get the latest India news and live updates.
