NEW DELHI: At least nine workers were killed and 15 injured in a boiler explosion at Vedanta Limted power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district on Tuesday. “Nine workers have died, and 15 have sustained injuries,” Prafull Thakur, Sakti superintendent of police said, adding that the explosion occured in the afternoon.The SP further informed that right after the blast, local administration and police teams rushed to the site and the rescue operation was immediately launched to look for survivors.According to the police, three victims were killed on the spot, while the others succumbed to injuries at hospitals. Injured workers have also been admitted to the hospitals in the neighbouring Raigarh district as they undergo treatment.Raigarh SDM, Mahesh Sharma, said the probe was under way to examine the exact cause of the mishap. “A heartbreaking incident has taken place at the Vedanta Power plant today in which some workers have been injured, and their treatment is underway. NEW DELHI: The Centre reportedly plans to increase the Lok Sabha seats to a maximum of 850 seats to operationalise 33 per cent reservation for women before the 2029 parliamentary elections. According to the draft Constitution amendment bill, the proposal of which is set to be introduced during a special sitting of Parliament beginning April 16, seats would also be increased in state and Union territory assemblies to accommodate the reservation, news agency PTI reported. Similar increases are planned for state assemblies and Union territory legislatures to accommodate the one-third quota. Seats reserved for women “shall be allotted by rotation to different constituencies in a state or Union territory,” the bill states.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pushed for the swift passage of the amendments.Earlier this week he said, “Any further delay will be unfortunate and a gross injustice to the women of India”. The Congress alleged that “when the intent behind a bill is mischievous, and the content of it is devious, the extent of damage to parliamentary democracy is enormous.”NDA has indicated that seat allocation will follow proportional representation using census data, currently the 2011 figures, though the ongoing 2027 Census could also be considered once published, PTI reported, citing NDA sources. They argue that southern states may gain relatively due to better population control compared to northern states.The draft clarifies that “population” will mean figures from a census, “as Parliament may by law determine,” giving flexibility on which dataset is used. ANI file photo Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor, which will cut travel time between the two cities to nearly half.The 213 km-long six-lane access-controlled Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor has been built at a cost of over Rs 12,000 crore.The corridor traverses through the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and will reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours at present to around two and a half hours, according to an official statement.The Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor will play a pivotal role in strengthening regional economic growth by enhancing connectivity between major tourism and economic centres as well as opening new avenues for trade and development across the region.”The project reflects the vision of the prime minister to develop next-generation infrastructure that combines high-speed connectivity with environmental sustainability and improved quality of life for citizens,” the statement said.Implementation of the project also involves the construction of 10 interchanges, three Railway Over Bridges (ROBs), four major bridges and 12 wayside amenities to enable seamless high-speed connectivity.The corridor is equipped with an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for commuters.Keeping in view the ecological sensitivity, rich biodiversity and wildlife in the region, the corridor has been designed with several features aimed at significantly reducing human-wildlife conflict.To ensure the free movement of wild animals, the project incorporates several dedicated wildlife protection features. ANI file photo Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor, which will cut travel time between the two cities to nearly half.The 213 km-long six-lane access-controlled Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor has been built at a cost of over Rs 12,000 crore.The corridor traverses through the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and will reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours at present to around two and a half hours, according to an official statement.The Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor will play a pivotal role in strengthening regional economic growth by enhancing connectivity between major tourism and economic centres as well as opening new avenues for trade and development across the region.”The project reflects the vision of the prime minister to develop next-generation infrastructure that combines high-speed connectivity with environmental sustainability and improved quality of life for citizens,” the statement said.Implementation of the project also involves the construction of 10 interchanges, three Railway Over Bridges (ROBs), four major bridges and 12 wayside amenities to enable seamless high-speed connectivity.The corridor is equipped with an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to provide a safer and more efficient travel experience for commuters.Keeping in view the ecological sensitivity, rich biodiversity and wildlife in the region, the corridor has been designed with several features aimed at significantly reducing human-wildlife conflict.To ensure the free movement of wild animals, the project incorporates several dedicated wildlife protection features. US President Donald Trump dialled PM Narendra Modi to discuss the situation in the West Asia region, including the importance of securing safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, and to review what the Indian leader described as substantial progress achieved in bilateral cooperation in various sectors. This was the second time that Trump spoke to Modi since the war between the US, Israel, and Iran broke out on February 28. Responding to a question from TOI shortly after the conversation, Gor said both sides were hoping to finalise “incredible deals” in time for the visit by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to India next month for the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting. And he doesn’t just show up,” said Gor, speaking to journalists on the margins of a reception at the US embassy. He also confirmed that the 2 leaders spoke about the US decision to blockade Iranian ports, which followed the failed peace talks with Iran in Islamabad over the weekend. Responding to media queries, Gor didn’t elaborate much on the nature of the deals that are being finalised, but said that these will be related to energy and other items. He said “big-ticket items” would be announced in the next few days and weeks. While announcing the framework for an interim trade deal with India in early February, Trump had said that India had committed to buying 0 billion worth of energy and other items from the US. According to Gor, while Trump updated Modi about the West Asia situation, he also discussed these “big-ticket items” in bilateral relations that are under discussion in Washington. Modi had earlier said in a post on X that both sides are committed to further strengthening their Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership in all areas. “We also discussed the situation in West Asia and stressed the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure,” said Modi in a post on X. India has so far focused more on diplomacy with Iran than on thoughts about joining any military coalition to secure safe passage for its tankers through the key energy waterway. On whether the US would extend the deadline for India’s import of Russian oil, and also a sanctions waiver for the strategic Chabahar port in Iran that India helped develop, Gor said he didn’t want to speak prematurely on these issues, but added there will be a decision at some point in time. The leaders had last spoken on March 24 amidst the raging war in the West Asia region that culminated in a 2-week ceasefire last week. Gor said that Trump wanted to update Modi about the situation when he spoke to him on Tuesday. There were reports the same day that the US and Iran could have another round of talks in Islamabad later this week. Asked about the prospects of more talks before the temporary ceasefire ends, Gor said it wasn’t for him to announce any future dialogue but said that the leaders discussed the blockade and the need to reopen the Strait. “They did talk about the blockade and the importance of reopening as soon as possible. Frankly, this whole region…the whole world is suffering because of this. Why should one country be able to turn off the lights anywhere else in the world? It’s unfair. It needs to stop, and the United States is determined to make that happen,” said the ambassador. “These are international waterways. There’s an international treaty. The only reason prices have gone up is that somebody is holding this area hostage. So obviously, the United States wants to open this waterway. And I think it benefits the whole world, including India,” added Gor. We are in the business of delivering results: Gor US ambassador Sergio Gor said that the last words that President Trump told the PM were, “I just want you to know, we all love you” Gor was speaking at a reception in the US embassy shortly after the talks. “And literally, that was the last thing. The relationship between our two nations is on a very strong footing.
