EAM S Jaishankar arrived in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday, where he is set to hold high-level meetings with the country’s leadership as part of his official visit. The minister will be in the UAE from April 11 to 12, where he will review close cooperation and work to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.The visit marks the second leg of his ongoing tour, following his engagements in Mauritius. EAM Jaishankar was previously in Mauritius to attend the 9th Indian Ocean Conference, where he also held discussions centred on bilateral ties. He is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the conference and engage with counterparts from other participating nations on its sidelines.Jaishankar also highlighted India’s role in supporting the island nation’s energy needs, stating that discussions are underway to finalise an agreement for the supply of oil and gas. He noted that the ongoing crisis in the Middle East has reinforced the need for dependable strategic partnerships, particularly in the energy domain.He also pointed to expanding cooperation in clean energy, mentioning that an Indian public sector enterprise is involved in developing Mauritius’ first floating solar power project. According to him, the partnership between the two countries continues to grow in the field of environment-friendly solutions.Jaishankar also handed over the final batch of e-buses to Mauritius, a step aimed at strengthening sustainable public transport while reducing carbon emissions.The ongoing visit, which includes engagements in both Mauritius and the UAE, reflects India’s Neighbourhood First policy, its Vision MAHASAGAR, and its broader commitment to the Global South.The timing of the visit is particularly important as the Middle East is currently grappling with a geopolitical crisis that began back on February 28, when US and Israel launched joint strikes on Iran. The document, themed around “Sonar Bangla” (Golden Bengal), outlines a proposed shift in governance, with a focus on national security, youth employment and women’s safety.Launching the manifesto in Kolkata, Union home minister Amit Shah described it as a roadmap to transform governance in the state and align it with the broader vision of a “Viksit Bharat”.Shah also criticised the Trinamool Congress government, alleging that 15 years of its rule had resulted in a breakdown of law and order and widespread public dissatisfaction. NEW DELHI: With his resignation on Friday, former Allahabad high court judge Justice Yashwant Varma saved himself from the embarrassment of being the first judge to be “removed” through a motion adopted in Parliament.Lok Sabha had admitted the motion to initiate proceedings against him in Aug last year. The law for removal of a judge of a constitutional court requires a motion for removal to be endorsed by 100 MPs in Lok Sabha if it is to be adopted. The required number is 50 in the case of Rajya Sabha. Before Justice Varma, there have been five judges of constitutional courts against whom a removal motion was adopted in Parliament — the first was from Supreme Court, Justice V Ramaswami, in 1991.However, he escaped “removal” as the motion failed to secure the required twothirds majority in LS. In 2011, Justice Soumitra Sen of Calcutta high court was the first judge against whom Rajya Sabha had voted with the required majority on aremoval motion.But the judge resigned before the motion was voted on in Lok Sabha.The same year, Justice PD Dinakaran, the then chief justice of Sikkim high court, resigned before removal proceedings were initiated against him in Rajya Sabha.In 2015, a motion was moved in Rajya Sabha against Justice JB Pardiwala of Gujarat high court — who has since been elevated to Supreme Court.However, the judge later removed a controversial statement from the judgment which had invited the action and escaped the proceedings. That same year, another motion for removal was moved in Rajya Sabha against Justice SK Gangele of Madhya Pradesh HC. However, an inquiry committee absolved the judge of sexual harassment charges.In the case of Justice Varma, the Lok Sabha speaker had admitted a motion for his removal on Aug 12, 2025. Before Justice Varma, there have been five judges of constitutional courts against whom a removal motion was adopted in Parliament — the first was from Supreme Court, Justice V Ramaswami, in 1991.However, he escaped “removal” as the motion failed to secure the required twothirds majority in LS. In 2011, Justice Soumitra Sen of Calcutta high court was the first judge against whom Rajya Sabha had voted with the required majority on aremoval motion.But the judge resigned before the motion was voted on in Lok Sabha.The same year, Justice PD Dinakaran, the then chief justice of Sikkim high court, resigned before removal proceedings were initiated against him in Rajya Sabha.In 2015, a motion was moved in Rajya Sabha against Justice JB Pardiwala of Gujarat high court — who has since been elevated to Supreme Court.However, the judge later removed a controversial statement from the judgment which had invited the action and escaped the proceedings. That same year, another motion for removal was moved in Rajya Sabha against Justice SK Gangele of Madhya Pradesh HC. However, an inquiry committee absolved the judge of sexual harassment charges.In the case of Justice Varma, the Lok Sabha speaker had admitted a motion for his removal on Aug 12, 2025. File photo NEW DELHI: The new generation of weight-loss injections — already popular globally — is now showing strong results in Indian patients too. A fresh study from a Delhi hospital finds that more than 4 in 10 people lost at least 10% of their body weight, a level doctors say can significantly improve overall health.The research, conducted by doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, led by endocrinologist Dr Ambrish Mithal and published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, tracked 150 overweight and obese adults on these therapies in routine clinical practice.On average, patients lost about 8% of their body weight in six months — roughly 6 to 10 kilos for many. Nearly three-fourths lost at least 5%, considered the minimum for health benefits such as better sugar control and reduced heart risk. Experts said the findings are based on short-term follow-up of about six months. “This is not the final weight loss. With longer follow-up, especially at one year, the reduction is likely to be significantly greater,” said Dr Ambrish Mithal.But the results were not the same for everyone.People without diabetes responded far better, losing almost double the weight compared to those with diabetes. The study suggests this could be because of deeper metabolic changes and insulin resistance in diabetic patients.The type of drug also mattered. Patients on tirzepatide — a newer dual-action injection — saw greater and faster weight loss than those on semaglutide. Many reached the 10% mark within 9 to 10 months, though doctors caution that the process is gradual, not instant.The study also offers a reality check. Younger patients and those trying these drugs for the first time saw quicker results, while those who had used similar medications earlier lost weight more slowly.Side effects like nausea, bloating and constipation were common, especially in the early phase, but were manageable and did not force patients to stop treatment.Unlike clinical trials, which are tightly controlled, this study reflects what happens in everyday life — where people may miss doses, vary their diet or have other health conditions.
