It has betrayed me,” he said.”The Congress only works for the Miyas, but they do nothing for the Scheduled Tribes like me,” Daimari alleged.He claimed that after nominating him from the Udalguri seat, the Congress offered no support in campaigning.”I called up the party leadership repeatedly, but they did not even receive my call. I am hurt because they did not help me at all. The district Congress committee did not help me,” Daimari said.After waiting for a long time for a response, and when it did not come, the decision was taken to leave the party, he added.When asked why he resigned just a day before the polling, Daimari said: “I have not betrayed the party, the party has betrayed me.” In the situation arising from Daimari’s announcement, the senior poll panel official clarified that the deadline for withdrawing nominations had long passed and candidates’ names had already been loaded onto the EVMs.”In fact, the polling parties have left for their polling stations. So, there is no question of withdrawing one’s name now from the contest,” he added.Polling for the 126-member Assam Assembly will be held on April 9, while the results will be declared on May 4. Representative image (PTI) HYDERABAD: Several residents of Hyderabad’s old city Tuesday contacted a booth-level officer (BLO) of the Election Commission to help them identify their names on the 2002 electoral rolls as part of the pre-SIR mapping exercise. To their shock, instead of someone who knew the rulebook, they were approached by a sanitation worker of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation who had no idea how to map voters. The issue came to light in Barkas, under Chandrayangutta constituency, when residents noticed the name and contact number of an assigned BLO on the EC website and reached out. “About 20 of us were waiting at Al-Qurmoshi Global School in Salala, Barkas. As we spoke to him, we realised he did not even know the role of a BLO. It was only when I mentioned SIR mapping that he came to the location,” said Syed Jallaluddin Zafar, an activist who was helping residents with the mapping process.”He could not read or write in Telugu. He simply handed over the phone and asked us to enter the details into an online form,” Zafar said. The video of the episode recorded by Zafar has since gone viral on X.Although there is no explicit rule prohibiting sanitation workers from being appointed as BLOs, the guidelines state that such roles are generally assigned to govt or semi-govt staff, such as teachers, anganwadi workers, panchayat staff, clerks and bill collectors – individuals expected to have basic literacy skills and administrative experience.One of the sanitation workers appointed as a BLO said they had been given smartphones for SIR work. “Along with me, around 10 such workers have been deployed for the exercise. We were asked to open the portal on the phone and hand it to the person, who then entered his or her details into a form. If the name appears, they put a tick. I attended a training session where we were promised payment,” he said.The sanitation worker said he starts work at 5am and continues the SIR duty after finishing his shift at 2pm. “I cannot read or write in Telugu or English. We were only told to put a tick if their name appeared. It has only been two days since we started this work,” he said.Chandrayangutta electoral registration officer V Surender said the appointments had been made due to an acute shortage of staff. “Many personnel have retired, and the scale of the exercise is large, so this is a stop-gap arrangement. It had fielded eight Muslim candidates in 2021 and three in the 2016 polls.The party announced its final candidate on Wednesday, with Rakesh Singh contesting from Kolkata Port. Ali Husain, president of Bengal BJP’s minority morcha, said, “… The party believes responsibility towards a community does not depend on fielding candidates from that community.” Party seniors further said that candidates were chosen on the basis of “winnability”, adding Muslim candidates had struggled to win on BJP tickets due to a disconnect between the party’s platform and the community members’ voting pattern. ANI file photo KOLKATA: The Bhowanipore assembly constituency – the high-profile seat where Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is pitted against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari – has seen its electorate shrink by nearly 25% following the SIR of the electoral roll.Of the total 51,004 deletions, 23.3% are Muslims and 76.7% are non-Muslims.Before the SIR process, Bhowanipore had 2,06,295 voters. In the first phase, 44,787 names were removed under categories such as absent, shifted, deceased, duplicate, or unmapped. A second round saw another 2,342 deletions, while 18 new voters were added. Around 14,154 voters were placed under adjudication, a source said.Sabar Institute researchers said their analysis of 15 supplementary lists showed 10,238 voters initially marked for adjudication were later reinstated, while 3,875 were deleted. “Among those deleted in supplementary lists, nearly 40% are Muslims,” one of them said.EC sources said around 3,500 names were deleted during the adjudication process. “Nearly 14,000 cases were marked for adjudication,” an official said.The institute’s analysis also showed 43% of non-Muslims were placed under adjudication. While 7.7% of Muslims were ultimately deleted from the final rolls, the figure for non-Muslims stood at 92%. Earlier data showed Muslims accounted for 22.7% of voters marked as ‘absent, shifted, dead/duplicate’, while their share among ‘unmapped’ voters was around 26%, in line with their population.
