While the Persons with Disabilities Act 1995 was operational then, it mentioned only seven disabilities.The committee chaired by BJP’s Lok Sabha MP PC Mohan further noted the submission made by representatives of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) that while around 1.35 crore Unique Disability Identity (UDID) cards have been issued so far, the department has requested RGI to take into account all 21 categories of disabilities recognised under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, during Census 2027. DEPwD officials also told the committee that they had requested RGI to consult the department on the issue so that figures in the Census turn out to be reliable.In the report on ‘Demands for Grants for the year 2026-27′ pertaining to Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (DEPwD), the committee emphasised “that a robust and reliable database, supplemented by the UDID framework, would greatly assist in evidence-based policy formulation and more effective targeting of welfare schemes for persons with disabilities.”These recommendations gain significance as Census 2027, to be conducted over two phases, is being rolled out on April 1, with houselisting operations (HLO) to be conducted from April 1 to Sept 30 this year. This will be followed by population enumeration in Feb 2027 during which PwDs will also be covered. It does not pulse through stock exchanges or policy corridors but across vast, restless waters where ships move quietly between continents. Yet, when conflict erupts in narrow choke points like the Strait of Hormuz, that invisible system becomes the country’s most visible vulnerability. Major chokepoints The ongoing tensions have done exactly that, forcing India to confront a reality it has long managed but rarely foregrounded.Its growth, its energy security and its strategic autonomy are all tied to sea lanes that run through some of the most volatile regions on the Earth.A narrow strait that powers a giant economyThe Strait of Hormuz is not just another maritime passage. It is the artery through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil flows, and for India, its importance is even more acute. Around 80 per cent of India’s energy imports pass through this corridor, making it a single point of failure for a country that is among the world’s largest energy consumers. The recent escalation involving Iran, Israel and the United States has demonstrated how quickly this artery can constrict. Importance of Indian oceanTanker traffic has slowed, vessels have been stranded and insurance costs have surged. For India, this has translated into immediate concerns over supply disruptions, rising crude prices and broader macroeconomic stress.The numbers strikingly reflect the scale of exposure. India imports more than 85 per cent of its crude oil and a significant share of its natural gas. Nearly half of that crude and over 60 per cent of LNG and LPG have historically moved through Hormuz. This is not just an energy issue but a systemic one. When oil flows are disrupted, inflation rises, the rupee weakens and industrial costs climb.Operation Sankalp and the navy’s silent watchAs tensions escalated, India responded not just through diplomacy but through deployment. Under Operation Sankalp, Indian naval warships have been maintaining a constant vigil in the Gulf region, escorting merchant vessels and ensuring safe passage through high-risk waters.At any given moment, dozens of Indian seafarers and vessels operate in and around the Persian Gulf. During the current crisis, several India-bound ships carrying crude oil and LPG were stranded or forced to alter routes. The navy’s role has been to provide a security umbrella, deterring threats ranging from missile strikes to drone attacks.The deployment of advanced warships such as INS Surat reflects a broader shift in India’s maritime posture. The navy is no longer confined to coastal defence. Nearly 95 per cent of India’s trade by volume moves by sea. About 16 per cent of its total trade is linked to this region, making any disruption not just an energy crisis but a broader economic challenge.Ports as gateways to prosperityIndia’s coastline stretches over 7,500 kilometres and hosts a network of major and minor ports that serve as gateways to global trade. Ports such as Mumbai, Kandla, Visakhapatnam, Chennai and Kochi handle millions of tonnes of cargo every year. Ports in IndiaEach port has its own specialisation. Western ports like Kandla and Mumbai handle large volumes of crude oil and petroleum products due to their proximity to the Gulf. Eastern ports such as Paradip and Visakhapatnam are crucial for coal and mineral exports. Southern ports like Chennai and Tuticorin play a key role in container traffic and industrial goods.The principal commodities moving through these ports reflect the structure of India’s economy. By combining maritime and overland routes, it aims to create an alternative pathway linking India to Europe through the Middle East.The corridor is significant not just for trade but for geopolitics. It reduces dependence on traditional routes and offers a framework for deeper economic integration with Gulf and European partners. However, it is not a complete substitute for existing sea lanes. Maritime routes will continue to dominate due to their scale and cost efficiency. IMECWhat IMEC does offer is redundancy. In a world where chokepoints can be disrupted by conflict, having multiple pathways becomes a strategic necessity rather than a luxury.A legacy written in the wavesIndia’s maritime story did not begin with modern trade or globalisation. It stretches back thousands of years to the Harappan civilisation, where ports like Lothal served as hubs of international commerce.Archaeological evidence shows that Harappan traders navigated the Arabian Sea, exporting goods such as carnelian beads to Mesopotamia. The construction of a sophisticated dockyard at Lothal demonstrates an advanced understanding of tides and maritime engineering.Ancient texts further reinforce this legacy. The Rigveda contains references to ocean voyages and ships with multiple oars. Maritime activity has always been central to India’s economic and strategic identity. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a broadside against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that the TMC government is hell-bent on carrying out the “funeral procession” of law and order in the state.Addressing a rally in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar, the Prime Minister said that huge number of people here in Cooch Behar has made it clear that the “Trinamool Congress’s time is up”.”No matter how much the TMC goons intimidate you on polling day, you must have trust in the law. In this election, fear will be driven out of Bengal. Confidence will awaken through the BJP’s grand victory. I assure you, after this election, a full accounting of their (TMC’s) sins will be done. It will be settled one by one. After May 4, the law will take its course, no matter how big a goon it may be, this time justice will be served,” PM Modi said.”On one hand, there is fear of TMC, and on the other hand, you have the trust of BJP. On one hand, there is fear of TMC’s cut money and corruption and on the other hand the trust of BJP which can accelerate development. Efforts are now being made to ensure that sisters across the country, including West Bengal, benefit from this starting from the Lok Sabha elections in 2029,” he said.”Therefore, the government has scheduled a special session of Parliament on April 16, 17, and 18. This right of our mothers and sisters has been pending for 40 years. Any further delay is not right. From Cooch Behar, I once again assure all states of the country that those states that have done good work in population control will not face any loss in terms of seats. Everyone will benefit. The participation of all states and everyone’s rights will remain protected. NEW DELHI: A fresh political row erupted in Assam after Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife holds multiple foreign passports, prompting a sharp rebuttal and legal threat from the BJP leader.The controversy began with Khera’s press conference in Delhi, where he claimed to possess documents suggesting that Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, held three passports. “We have documents showing that Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, holds three passports. The first is a UAE Golden Card, the second an Antigua and Barbuda passport, and the third an Egyptian passport. Two of these belong to Islamic countries, yet they continue to claim religious adherence publicly,” he said.Khera escalated the attack by linking the issue to broader allegations. “You are seeing photos of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife. Their names have been linked to several allegations such as land grabbing, misuse of temple funds, government subsidies, and chit fund scams. But today, the documents we are presenting are directly related to matters outside India,” he said. Calling it a “shocking detail”, he added that she had “not one, not two, but three passports, which have not expired”.’Khera will face consequences of his actions’: HimantaSarma dismissed the claims as politically motivated and said that both he and his wife will file a defamation case against Khera within 48 hours. “Today’s press conference by Pawan Khera reflects the deep frustration and panic within the Congress party. As Assam moves decisively towards a historic mandate, such desperate and baseless attacks only expose their sinking ground,” he wrote on X.“I categorically reject every allegation made by him. These are malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam,” he added, announcing legal action. “My wife and I will be filing both criminal and civil defamation cases within the next 48 hours against Shri Pawan Khera. He will be held fully accountable for his reckless and defamatory statements.””I have complete faith in the judiciary. Holding multiple passports and failure to disclose properties is a grave and criminal offence. How much money have they sent from Assam to their bank accounts abroad? More investigation is required,” he wrote, calling the chief minister an “embarrassment” who “will have to answer the questions and pay for his crime.”Sarma responded again, flagging technical inconsistencies across the alleged documents. In a detailed post, he listed what he called “serious discrepancies” that pointed to fabrication. These included a “surname mismatch — ‘SARMA’ used instead of the official ‘SHARMA’”, and a photograph that “appears to be a publicly available image, not a standard biometric capture”.Referring to an Antigua and Barbuda passport, he pointed to an “expiry date mismatch between printed field and MRZ”, while an Egyptian passport allegedly showed “passport number mismatch… spelling errors (‘Egyptiann’) and incorrect Arabic reference”.“These inconsistencies strongly indicate possible fabrication or digital manipulation.
