Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha has ordered the termination of two government teachers for their alleged involvement with Lashker e Taiba’s overground network. He would receive terror funds via local conduits and pass them on to families of known terrorists for support, besides using the money for terror recruitment and logistics.Ghulam was arrested in 2023. Sources, citing investigation details, said he was a highly-radicalised terror sympathiser and involved in recruitment of youth into the terror fold.Majid Iqbal Dar was appointed as a laboratory assistant in 2009 promoted as a teacher in 2019. As per the dossier on his terror links, Dar was working for LeT as an OGW and was involved in radicalising youngsters in Rajouri and surrounding areas. The common refrain: the system has become increasingly unaccountable, and repeated examination leaks have eroded public trust in institutions. The movement has been backed by AAP, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Left parties, among others.Pandurang Jadhav, 50, who travelled over 1,300km from Pune to participate in the protest, said he feared for the future of his two sons, aged 17 and 21. “My children have lost faith in the system. Every few months there is some controversy — sometimes a paper leak, other times glitches in the CBSE system. I came here for their future,” said Jadhav, a financial analyst.Sajeev Kumar, 24, from Jaunpur, said he changed multiple trains and travelled for nearly 10 hours for the protest.Among the youngest participants was Abhimanyu of Class III who wore a cockroach-style face mask and came with his elder brother. “I only know that there was a paper leak and responsibility should be taken, and the education minister must resign,” he said.Several participants described the protest as extending beyond examination leaks.For 83-year-old retired driver Itwari Lal Mathur, the issue was deeply personal. “Young people are losing hope. Children are suffering because of these failures. A high-stakes standoff between the Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at four points along the India-Bangladesh border in Bengal ended abruptly overnight, with all 40-odd Bangladeshi nationals who had been stranded at zero points since Friday disappearing by Saturday morning.The most tense confrontation unfolded at Pillar No. 134 in Panishala, in Cooch Behar’s Mekhliganj, where 10 people had been stranded after BGB refused to accept them, claiming they were being “illegally pushed back” from India.When BSF sought a flag meeting, BGB declined. After hours of standoff and a major altercation in the early hours of Saturday, BGB backed down. BSF said all those stranded had since returned to Bangladesh.Even as the immediate standoffs were resolved, BGB on Saturday claimed to have foiled eight separate BSF “push-back” attempts in the preceding 24 hours, issuing an official statement through its public relations officer Shariful Islam.A similar pattern played out at three other locations – Sitalkuchi and Dinhata in Cooch Behar and Sakati in Jalpaiguri Sadar – where around 30 more Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, had been stranded through Friday before vanishing overnight.In a video that surfaced during the standoff, purportedly showing a BSF-BGB exchange in front of the stranded individuals, a woman is seen saying she was from Khulna and wanted to return to her village. Sources said BSF used the footage to press BGB into accepting them back.Among the incidents BGB cited in their statement, three individuals were stopped at the Jadabpur border near North 24 Parganas and Nadia; 17 were turned back at the Karmudanga border near South Dinajpur; 21 were blocked at the Barkhata and Payashottibari border near Dhubri in Assam; and seven were prevented from crossing at the Dighaltari border near Cooch Behar. “Eight separate attempts were foiled as a result of heightened alertness, intensified patrols and immediate preventive measures,” the BGB statement said.The episode unfolded against the backdrop of the new BJP govt in West Bengal accelerating the identification and deportation of undocumented Bangladeshi nationals.The Centre on Friday also asked Dhaka to expedite the verification process for suspected illegal immigrants to facilitate deportations. . A Delhi court on Saturday convicted Raju Kumar Singh, BJP MLA from Sahebganj in Muzaffarpur, in an eight-year-old New Year party firing case that led to the death of a woman, Dr Archana Gupta. Singh was held guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the IPC and under the Arms Act. Special judge Vishal Gogne of the Rouse Avenue court ordered him to be taken into custody. His wife, Renu Singh and two others, Rana Rajesh Singh and Ramendra Singh, who were accused of destruction of evidence, were acquitted. The court will hear arguments on the sentence on June 9.The case relates to celebratory firing during a party on Dec 31, 2018, at a farmhouse in Fatehpur Beri in Delhi. Gupta was hit by a bullet in the head and died in the hospital on Jan 3, 2019.‘Government cannot wash its hands of responsibility’: MLA on deathsDuring the period, the state government paid Rs 5.1 crore in compensation. However, the payouts varied sharply across districts, highlighting gaps between reported deaths and cleared claims. Bikaner received Rs 92 lakh in compensation, Churu Rs 72 lakh, Jodhpur Rs 58 lakh and Hanumangarh Rs 48 lakh. Sriganganagar received Rs 18 lakh. Jhalawar, despite reporting 42 deaths, also received only Rs 18 lakh. Deeg reported eight deaths but no compensation, while Kota reported 11 deaths and received Rs 2 lakh.Officials attributed disparities to claim verification and approval processes. The agriculture department records did not specify the exact cause of each death. The data covered fatalities linked to pesticide use during agricultural work. It included only cases reported and verified by authorities.“If hundreds of farmers are dying while carrying out routine agricultural work, the government cannot wash its hands of responsibility by merely paying compensation. We need accountability, stricter regulation of pesticides, and a comprehensive safety programme for farmers across Rajasthan,” Kishanpole MLA Amin Kagzi said.The death count surfaced alongside another set of numbers from the assembly: 189 pesticide samples failed quality tests over the same two-year period. Of 5,570 pesticide samples collected across Rajasthan, 5,521 were analysed. While 5,332 met the prescribed standards, 189 were found substandard.Authorities issued 282 notices, filed 14 court cases, suspended 14 licences and cancelled 22 licences following quality checks. Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh topped the list of substandard pesticide samples at 17 each, followed by Bikaner (13), Kota (10) and Bhilwara (9). Sriganganagar also recorded the highest number of notices at 34, followed by Bikaner (20), Hanumangarh (19) and Churu (17). Legal action was launched in 14 cases, including five in Bikaner and three in Sriganganagar.The figures paint a stark picture of pesticide risks in India. Heavy dependence on chemical pesticides has long been a pillar of high-yield farming, but experts have repeatedly warned that inadequate protective gear, unsafe handling practices, excessive spraying and poor-quality agrochemicals can turn fields into toxic workplaces.Beyond human health risks, pesticide overuse has been linked to soil degradation, water contamination, biodiversity loss and declining populations of pollinators and beneficial insects.
