Humayun Kabir (PTI file photo) NEW DELHI: Aam Janata Unnayan Party chief Humayun Kabir has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of ignoring Muslim voters while favouring Hindus through temple construction.“Mamata Banerjee takes Muslim votes and builds temples after becoming Chief Minister three times. She builds Jagannath Dham, and in Rajarhat, she is also building a Durga temple by taking Muslim land. When she does things for Hindus, won’t I work for Muslims?” Kabir told ANI.Kabir, who was expelled from the Trinamool Congress after proposing to build the Babri Masjid in Murshidabad, formed the Aam Janata Unnayan Party to contest elections in West Bengal. He recently joined hands with AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi as part of their campaign against the TMC and BJP.“We won’t let Mamata Banerjee come back to power. She is distributing Rs 1,500 under the ‘Lakshmir Bhandar’ scheme; I promise to give women Rs 3,500,” Kabir said, signalling a larger outreach to Muslim voters.Speaking at a press conference earlier, Owaisi outlined the alliance’s strategy, saying their main goal was to build independent political leadership for Muslims in the state. “Our attempt is that a leadership from the Muslim minority emerges and strengthens in this election in West Bengal. We have decided the number of seats we will contest. This alliance is not limited to just this election, but it will be taken forward to achieve our political objective,” he said.Owaisi also highlighted development concerns in areas where Muslims lack political representation. “I believe, and government data from West Bengal, the Government of India, and NSSO confirms, that regions where the Muslim minority lacks independent political leadership have very poor social, economic, and human development indicators. NEW DELHI: Despite progress in HIV control, Delhi continues to face gaps in treatment coverage, with only about 70% of identified patients currently linked to care, prompting the Centre to step up district-level action.At a high-level workshop—‘Suraksha Sankalp Karyashala’—held in the capital, the Union health ministry reviewed HIV response in Delhi and Haryana, stressing the need to improve testing, treatment linkage and patient follow-up.Delhi, with an estimated 59,079 people living with HIV and an adult prevalence of 0.33%, has been flagged for urgent improvement, particularly in ensuring that those diagnosed are started on and retained in treatment.As part of a focused strategy, seven districts in Delhi—North, New Delhi, Shahdara, Central, South East, South and North West—have been identified for intensified interventions and close monitoring.Addressing officials, Dr Rakesh Gupta, Additional Secretary and Director General, National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), said stronger coordination at the district level is critical to bridging gaps in the HIV care continuum, from testing to treatment and viral suppression.Experts say the gap in Delhi is not due to lack of facilities but challenges in linking patients to care and retaining them in treatment. “Delhi’s current treatment coverage of around 70% does not point to a lack of hospitals or medical expertise. Instead, it reflects a last-mile gap in the HIV care continuum where patients are diagnosed but may not be seamlessly linked to treatment, or struggle to remain engaged in long-term care,” said Dr Neeraj Nischal, Prof of medicine at AIIMS.Delays in starting therapy, stigma, treatment interruptions and the realities of a highly mobile urban population continue to limit progress. Strengthening early initiation of treatment, better patient tracking across facilities and more flexible care models—especially for migrant populations—could help close the gap.He also emphasised the need for portable treatment systems, including a unified patient database, multi-month dispensing of medicines and community-based distribution to ensure continuity of care for people who frequently move for work. The campus will include a hostel for 40 students, staff quarters, and other essential amenities, making it an important residential scientific learning centre for students.On this occasion, director general of UCOST, Durgesh Pant, informed that the two-storey science gallery block will feature a “Fun Science Gallery,” exhibition halls, science and agriculture galleries, a training hall, and a modern astronomy gallery.Additionally, the premises will include a 120-seat auditorium, a modern 71-seat planetarium (with inner and outer dome facilities), and world-class conference and development halls for staff.After the inspection, the chief minister also reviewed science models prepared by students from various schools and interacted with them, encouraging the young innovators.The chief minister stated that this science centre will become a major hub for education, research, and innovation for the students of the state in the future.CM Dhami emphasised that development is incomplete without science, and through this centre, children from remote areas will also get the opportunity to understand modern scientific technologies and astronomy. Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, during his visit to Champawat district on Tuesday, conducted an on-site inspection of the under-construction state-of-the-art Science Centre being built at a cost of approximately Rs 55.52 crore CHAMPAWAT: Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, during his visit to Champawat district on Tuesday, conducted an on-site inspection of the under-construction state-of-the-art science centre being built at a cost of approximately Rs 55.52 crore, according to an official release.He closely reviewed the quality, progress, and timeliness of the construction work and issued necessary directions to the concerned officials.During the inspection, the chief minister examined the proposed scientific galleries and the four-storey science campus facilities. The campus will include a hostel for 40 students, staff quarters, and other essential amenities, making it an important residential scientific learning centre for students.On this occasion, director general of UCOST, Durgesh Pant, informed that the two-storey science gallery block will feature a “Fun Science Gallery,” exhibition halls, science and agriculture galleries, a training hall, and a modern astronomy gallery.Additionally, the premises will include a 120-seat auditorium, a modern 71-seat planetarium (with inner and outer dome facilities), and world-class conference and development halls for staff.After the inspection, the chief minister also reviewed science models prepared by students from various schools and interacted with them, encouraging the young innovators.The chief minister stated that this science centre will become a major hub for education, research, and innovation for the students of the state in the future.CM Dhami emphasised that development is incomplete without science, and through this centre, children from remote areas will also get the opportunity to understand modern scientific technologies and astronomy. The state government aims to develop a scientific temperament among the youth and prepare them for future challenges.Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also directed the executing agency to complete the construction work within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining high quality. Representational Image NEW DELHI: The first phase of the next national Census—an exercise last conducted in 2011—will begin on Wednesday, marking the start of the world’s largest enumeration drive.The exercise will be the country’s 16th Census and the eighth since Independence. It was originally scheduled for 2021 but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Watch Census Goes Fully Digital: How India Will Count Its Population With Apps, Data And Self-Entry Here are 10 things to know about Census 2027:The first phase, known as the House Listing and Housing Census, will run for six months until September. During this period, data on the condition of houses, available household amenities, and assets owned by households will be collected.The reference date for this leg is 00:00 hours of March 1, 2027 (October 1, 2026, for Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Jammu and Kashmir; Uttarakhand’s and Himachal Pradesh).Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Delhi, Goa, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Odisha, and Sikkim will do the Houselisting Census from April 16 to May 15 along with a period of self-enumeration from April 1 to 15.Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, and Haryana will start Houselisting Census from May 1 to May 30 with a period of self-enumeration from April 16 to April 30.In the second phase, population enumeration will be conducted during February 2027. However, in Ladakh, snow-bound, non-synchronous areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, this leg will be held during September 2026.During this phase, information on demographics, socio-economics, education, migration, fertility, etc. will be collected.For the first time, the exercise will also involve caste enumeration, dates for which will be announced later.In another first, the population count drive will be held digitally.
