KOLKATA: Aftershocks of the showdown between Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over raids on Trinamool-linked political consultancy I-PAC jolted Calcutta high court Friday, prompting Justice Suvra Ghosh to postpone hearing petitions filed by either side till Jan 14 on grounds of “enormous disturbance and commotion” in the courtroom. The judge, seemingly annoyed at her repeated pleas for “order” being ignored by lawyers and apprentices seeking to outshout each other, walked out of the courtroom after quickly announcing the forced adjournment. Justice Ghosh specified in her order that she would have heard both petitions as scheduled had a large gathering of lawyers and others not entered the courtroom and caused a ruckus. “Several requests made by the court to maintain decorum and dignity fell on deaf ears. The environment in the courtroom is not conducive to commence/continue with the hearing,” she said.’I cannot hear anything’: Judge said, leading to adjournment Enforcement Directorate, the first mover in the legal battle over Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s alleged interference in the probe against I-PAC, immediately approached acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul for an urgent hearing. The plea was turned down. Acting CJ Paul told the agency’s counsel Dhiraj Trivedi that there was no justification in pushing for an urgent hearing after the judge assigned to take up its petition had fixed a date. The face-off between ED and Mamata started Thursday afternoon after she drove to the Loudon Street residence of I-PAC director Pratik Jain when the agency was searching the premises for evidence linked to an investigation in a 2020 money laundering case. The CM next went to I-PAC’s office in Salt Lake’s Sector V, staying put for almost four hours and allegedly taking away sheaves of documents and storage devices that she claimed contained TMC’s election strategy. Besides Mamata, ED’s petition accuses DGP Rajeev Kumar and Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Varma of “theft of digital devices and other evidence, and wrongful restraint and confinement of central govt officers”. Mamata’s petition against ED alleges that the central agency was doing BJP’s bidding and targeting I-PAC addresses to “snatch” Trinamool-specific and other data pertaining to the upcoming assembly elections. Friday’s hearing was scheduled for 2.30pm, but the crowd in court no. 5 started to swell after the lunch break ended at 2pm. ED counsel Trivedi and Trinamool’s Kalyan Banerjee complained that they were finding it impossible to reach the bench to argue their cases. “Anyone not associated with the case, please leave,” Justice Ghosh pleaded. MADURAI: Madras high court, hearing contempt petitions filed over non-compliance of its earlier order on lighting of Karthigai Deepam at the deepathoon atop a Thiruparankundram hill in Madurai district, said on Friday that charges would be framed against the contemnors if they failed to show cause for not complying with the directive, reports K Kaushik. Madurai district collector K J Praveen Kumar, police commissioner J Loganathan, executive officer of Subramaniya Swamy temple Yagna Narayanan and Madurai South DCP A G Inigo Divyan, who are contemnors in the case, were present in court. The collector as well as DCP informed the court that they acted entirely on their own. Justice G R Swaminathan of Madurai bench of HC observed that the contemnors had not shown cause as to why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them. “Unless proper cause is shown, charges will be framed… on Feb 2,” the judge said. The state informed the court that Letters Patent Appeals were filed against contempt proceedings and they were yet to be taken up by the division bench. Seven Hindu men have been killed in Bangladesh since Dec 18 – the day garment factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was lynched and his body hanged from a tree and set ablaze in Mymensingh, a killing that India described as “horrendous” and “barbaric”. Of the seven, three, including a journalist, were killed this week. “We continue to witness a disturbing pattern of recurring attacks on minorities as well as their homes and businesses by extremists. Such communal incidents need to be dealt with swiftly and firmly,” ministry of external affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in his weekly briefing. The others killed in violence against Hindus were Amrit Mandal (Dec 24); factory security guard Bajendra Biswas (Dec 29); businessman Khokon Chandra Das (Dec 31); journalist Rana Pratap and businessman Moni Chakraborty (Monday); and Mithun Sarkar (Tuesday). In a briefing following the lynching of Mandal, who Dhaka said was a “listed criminal”, Jaiswal on Dec 26 said over 2,900 incidents of violence against minorities, including cases of killings, arson, and land grab, had been documented by independent sources during the tenure of the interim govt and these incidents could not be brushed aside as mere media exaggeration or dismissed as political violence. The Yunus-led administration has repeatedly dismissed India’s concerns as propaganda by Indian media. There were some “visible changes”, though, right outside its office on the 11th floor at Godrej Waterside in Sector V, the most crucial one being the added police post on the 11th floor. ID cards were being checked off and on. I-PAC director Pratik Jain was reportedly not in office even though a major meeting took place on Friday evening. The idea of getting the employees back to work was floated by the CM herself on Thursday, just before leaving I-PAC office, it’s learnt. Mamata inquired with director Jain if the staff would resume working. She was told by the management they were asked to work from home. It was then decided that the staff would be asked to report back to the office from Friday to “restore normal work” as quickly as possible. “There was an apprehension that ED would seal our office premises. We were relieved it did not happen. Most of us worked normally on Friday and even sent out press releases as on any other day,” said one of them. I-PAC Thursday released a statement, detailing its portfolio with multiple parties cutting across multiple ideologies and claimed ED searches “raises serious concerns and sets an unsettling precedent”. “Regardless, we have extended full cooperation and will continue to do so as required engaging with the process in complete accordance and respect for the law,” it said. “Over the years, I-PAC has worked in a professional advisory capacity with multiple parties across ideologies and regions, including BJP, Congress, AAP, TMC, DMK, YSR Congress Party, BRS, JDU, Shiv Sena among others. . INDORE: A nurse at MY Hospital, Indore, allegedly cut the thumb of a one-and-a-half-month-old boy with scissors while removing an IV cannula earlier this week. Nursing officer Aarti Kshotriya was suspended after the negligence was discovered, while a month’s salary of a nursing in-charge and two assistant nursing in-charge officers was withheld as punishment, MG Medical College dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria said. “MY Hospital superintendent was asked to probe the matter and submit a report,” he added. The infant had been admitted to the chest ward with pneumonia and survived ventilator support. He was to be discharged in a couple of days when the reckless act occurred on Jan 7. The baby was rushed to the Super Specialty Hospital, where surgeons reattached his thumb. “He is recovering well,” Dr Ghanghoria said. An inquiry committee comprising hospital superintendent Dr Ashok Yadav, paediatrician Dr Nirbhay Mehta, deputy superintendent Dr Rohit Baderia, and nursing superintendent Dayavati Dayal recorded the statement of the accused nurse on Thursday. . INDORE: A nurse at MY Hospital, Indore, allegedly cut the thumb of a one-and-a-half-month-old boy with scissors while removing an IV cannula earlier this week. Nursing officer Aarti Kshotriya was suspended after the negligence was discovered, while a month’s salary of a nursing in-charge and two assistant nursing in-charge officers was withheld as punishment, MG Medical College dean Dr Arvind Ghanghoria said. “MY Hospital superintendent was asked to probe the matter and submit a report,” he added. The infant had been admitted to the chest ward with pneumonia and survived ventilator support. He was to be discharged in a couple of days when the reckless act occurred on Jan 7. The baby was rushed to the Super Specialty Hospital, where surgeons reattached his thumb. “He is recovering well,” Dr Ghanghoria said. An inquiry committee comprising hospital superintendent Dr Ashok Yadav, paediatrician Dr Nirbhay Mehta, deputy superintendent Dr Rohit Baderia, and nursing superintendent Dayavati Dayal recorded the statement of the accused nurse on Thursday. Madhya Pradesh DyCM Rajendra Shukla, who is in charge of the health department, took cognisance of the negligence and directed a thorough investigation into the role of the medical and support staff concerned.
