Congress party flags NEW DELHI: Reeling from fluctuating political fortunes, Congress has decided to intensify political and ideological education for workers down to the lowest rung of the organisation, even as it looks for electoral victories to revive the mood that prevailed in the immediate wake of the 2024 Lok Sabha election results.It is learnt that Congress has decided to institutionalise internal “training” by setting up “training departments” in all the states. They would be helmed by three key people that the party believes have the seniority, understanding of the Congress organisation and ideological commitment to carry out education for the cadre.Interestingly, the party is looking to focus on the lower rungs of workers for training—district, block and mandal level—where the departments will conduct regular training sessions through structured programmes for workers and office-bearers.Though the move appears odd, it seems to be in line with the decision of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to empower the District Congress Committees (DCC) through centrally directed appointments of DCC presidents via the “Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan”.The focus of the training would be “political education, ideological clarity and organisational discipline”. As per a directive sent by the AICC to state units, “In the present political context, it has become imperative to strengthen the party’s internal training mechanisms so as to build informed, committed, and capable cadres at all levels.”According to the blueprint, the subjects of training would be educating workers about “Congress ideology and values,” “history of the Congress and its role in nation-building,” “building understanding of the party organisation, structure, and functioning,” and “clarifying the roles, responsibilities, and conduct expected of political functionaries and office bearers”.Just as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been stressing the ideological battle with BJP for many years, the AICC “training department” is headed by his confidant Sachin Rao who is a strong votary of political education of workers. He has also been the brain behind some fellowships that Congress has launched. Rao has lately been holding training camps with the newly nominated district presidents in states under the “Srijan” process.Meanwhile, amid the legal woes created for the party by rivals led by the BJP, Congress is shortlisting five good lawyers linked to it in every state who can take up their cause in courts at quick notice. We have seen this in Lok Sabha elections, assembly elections and now even in the civic body polls.With municipal corporation elections in Mumbai, Pune and other regions of Maharashtra next week, the BJP-led Mahayuti government has scheduled the credit of instalments under the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana on January 14, just 24 hours before the voting begins. Under the scheme, more than 2.5 crore women will get payments for December 2025 and January 2026, totalling Rs 3,000 per beneficiary. BMC Becomes Mega Battleground As Thackerays Reunite And Alliances Shift Ahead Of Civic Wars 2026 Maharashtra Congress questions timing As expected, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee objected strongly to this pre-poll payout. It has written to the State Election Commission, alleging that the timing of the payments violates the Model Code of Conduct and requesting that disbursement be deferred until after polling.But the state government has strongly defended its decision. State revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule rejected Congress’s claim and said the payments were part of an ongoing welfare scheme and not linked to the election schedule. “This is an ongoing welfare programme of the state government. For polls in 29 civic bodies, women across the entire state cannot be deprived of their rightful benefits,” he told a press conference, adding any attempt to stall payments would amount to discrimination against women.And its not just the BJP trying to woo women voters ahead of the civic body polls. The Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, have also reached out to women voters in their manifesto, promising “Swabhiman Nidhi” of Rs 1,500 per month for house helps and women from the Koli community.The Ladki Bahin Scheme had played a key role in the resounding victory of the BJP-led Mahayuti in the last asembly elections in the state in which the opposition’s MVA was literally decimated. The DMK government in the state, led by chief minister MK Stalin, launched the second phase of the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam (KMUT), expanding the flagship women’s rights entitlement scheme to benefit an additional 17 lakh women across the state.The state government also announced a one-time additional payment of Rs 1,000 in December 2025 to beneficiaries of the scheme, which provides monthly assistance of Rs 1,000 to eligible women. The additional payment was credited ahead of the Pongal festival.Opposition parties, including the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the BJP, which is in opposition here, have criticised the timing of the payment alleging it was announced with electoral considerations in mind. NEW DELHI: Former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Monday after he suffered two bouts of unconsciousness last week and is scheduled to undergo an MRI, officials said.According to officials, Dhankhar had experienced “two bouts of unconsciousness” on January 10 when he went to the washroom. He was taken to AIIMS on Monday for a medical checkup, following which doctors advised hospitalisation for further tests.“Today, he had gone to AIIMS for a checkup when the doctors insisted that he should get admitted for tests,” an official said.Dhankhar has a history of blacking out on multiple occasions in recent years.
