NEW DELHI: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his controversial remarks on “troubling Miya Muslims”, calling them unconstitutional and divisive.Owaisi mocked the chief minister, saying, “I want to give you Rs 2 as alms,” and accused him of reducing constitutional governance to prejudice and intimidation. In a lengthy response, Owaisi said India’s Constitution guarantees equality and non-discrimination, regardless of religion or community. “The Constitution says all are equal. No discrimination should be done, whether it is a chief minister or anyone else,” he said. Effort To Protect Assam’s Identity, Says Himanta Defending ‘Miyan’ Remark Owaisi alleged that Bengali-speaking Muslims in Assam were being scapegoated for issues ranging from migration to rising prices. “If vegetable prices increase in Assam, Miya Muslims are blamed. If someone wants to vote, they are told to go to Bangladesh,” he said, adding that such rhetoric amounted to targeting a community for political gain. The AIMIM leader’s remarks came after Sarma made statements encouraging action against “Miya Muslims” in Assam. Sarma said, “Trouble the Miya Muslims by any means. If they face trouble, they will go from Assam … We are directly against the Miya Muslims. We are not hiding anything.”The comments triggered a political storm in the election-bound northeastern state, with opposition parties accusing the BJP of resorting to communal polarisation to consolidate votes. The BJP, however, has long maintained that its focus in Assam is on addressing illegal immigration and protecting indigenous rights. Bengali-speaking Muslims have frequently been labelled “illegal infiltrators” in political discourse, an issue that has remained central to Assam’s electoral politics.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Omar Abdullah SRINAGAR/JAMMU: J&K CM Omar Abdullah presented on Friday the National Conference (NC) govt’s second budget, peppered with references to challenges arising out of last year’s Pahalgam attack, Operation Sindoor and devastating floods.Presenting the Rs 1.27-lakh crore budget for 2026-27 as he also handles finance, Omar proposed two dedicated emergency hospitals and bullet-proof ambulances in frontier areas prone to shelling, cross-border attacks and natural disasters. One hospital will come up in Uri and the other in Poonch. Both had borne the brunt of Pakistani shelling during Operation Sindoor.“…In J&K, just as our economy was consolidating with renewed vigour, the barbaric terrorist attack at Pahalgam and its aftermath shocked us. The devastating floods in Aug-Sept severely battered Jammu region. All sectors, including tourism, handicrafts and agriculture, are badly affected. There is a substantial loss of jobs and business, leading to financial stress on families,” Omar said. The CM announced full fee waivers for students of economically weaker families from Class 9 to college, free LPG cylinders for families under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), monthly sponsorships for orphans, scholarships for tribal students, and free govt transport for those with disabilities.Plans were also unveiled to increase seats in medical colleges, while Rs 180 crore was allocated for modernisation of Amarnath Yatra infrastructure.Omar’s rivals were not impressed. “Central funds have effectively been diverted towards party (NC) legislators. There is nothing for common people,” said leader of opposition Sunil Sharma of BJP. PDP MLA Waheed Parra dismissed the budget as “mere repackaging of centrally sponsored schemes”. Peoples Conference chief Sajad Gani Lone called it “uninspiring”.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’We Were Preparing For War’: Former DGMO Reveals Inside Story Of India-China Doklam Stand-OffGrand Welcome To Dance Record: Indian Diaspora Gears Up For PM Modi’s Malaysia VisitWeeks After Noida Techie’s Death, Delhi Biker Dies After Falling Into Pit Dug By Jal BoardIndia Stands Firm On Chabahar Despite US-Iran Tensions And A Sanctions Threat, Tehran Backs DelhiFormer DGMO Lt Gen A.K. NHAI (Representative image) NEW DELHI: Over half a crore highway car users have bought FASTag Annual Pass in past six months since this scheme was launched and there have been 26.5 crore toll payments using the pass @ Rs 15 each at plazas. Data show that there has been a 50% increase in trips of car users who usually took up to a maximum of 100 trips in a year, indicating how the annual pass has encouraged people for more highway travel.NHAI officials said around 28% of total car transactions recorded on the NH network are now being carried out through the FASTag Annual Pass. They added that increased penetration of annual pass among private car users will also help the highways authority for better implementation of Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) or barrier-less toll collection, which is being rolled out.“The region-wise analysis shows Chandigarh leads in terms of usage, accounting for 14% of total annual pass transactions across the country, followed by Tamil Nadu at 12.3% and Delhi at 11.5%. These figures demonstrate widespread adoption of the annual pass across diverse geographies from northern urban centres to southern states,” NHAI said.As per the highways authority Bijwasan toll plaza, Delhi-NCR has recorded the maximum of around 57% of total car crossings at the fee plaza using the annual pass, followed by Mundka in Delhi-NCR and Jhinjholi plaza in Sonipat, both registering around 53% of non-commercial vehicle crossings using the annual pass.Applicable across 1,150 fee plazas on national highways and national expressways, the annual pass eliminates the need to frequently recharge FASTag through one-time fee payment of Rs 3,000 for one year validity or 200 toll plaza crossings. The charge for annual pass will be hiked in April aligning with the revision of toll charges. The annual pass gets activated within two hours on the existing FASTag linked to the vehicle after payment of one-time fee through Rajmargyatra app or NHAI website.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos’We Were Preparing For War’: Former DGMO Reveals Inside Story Of India-China Doklam Stand-OffGrand Welcome To Dance Record: Indian Diaspora Gears Up For PM Modi’s Malaysia VisitWeeks After Noida Techie’s Death, Delhi Biker Dies After Falling Into Pit Dug By Jal BoardIndia Stands Firm On Chabahar Despite US-Iran Tensions And A Sanctions Threat, Tehran Backs DelhiFormer DGMO Lt Gen A.K.
