Dismisses Plea Against Bail To ‘Mastermind’ NEW DELHI: Implementing its view that bail granted by a HC should not be ordinarily challenged in the apex court, Supreme Court Friday dismissed Uttarakhand’s appeal questioning the grant of bail to one Abdul Malik, the alleged mastermind of a mob that hurled a petrol bomb to torch a police station in Haldwani in 2024.A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana asked whether throwing a bomb constitutes an offence under UPA. “Is throwing a bomb a UAPA offence?” the bench asked the state additional advocate general Gaurav Bhatia before he could open arguments for cancellation of bail granted to Malik by HC.”If a mob burns a police station, how is it an offence under UAPA? How did the offence affect national security? We have doubts about invocation of UAPA charges against the accused, that is why we are not inclined to entertain the appeal,” Justice Bagchi said.Bhatia tried to impress upon the court the seriousness of the offence. “The accused is the mastermind behind mobilising the mob and one of his key associates threw petrol bombs to burn the police station, which is an offence that attracts a life sentence. NEW DELHI: Cabinet Friday approved two strategic tunnel projects and the approach roads on NH-244 in J&K at an estimated cost of around Rs 9,800 crore to provide all-weather connectivity between Kashmir Valley and Jammu region while improving access to Chenab Valley.The projects comprise Singhpora-Vailoo tunnel and Sudhmahadev-Dranga tunnel, along with their approach roads, on the Anantnag-Chenani corridor. These are expected to strengthen road connectivity in Doda, Kishtwar and Udhampur districts, and reduce travel time.While the 39-km Singhapora-Vailoo stretch will have 10-km unidirectional twin-tube tunnels, the 13-km Sudhmahadev–Dranga section will have 8-km twin tube tunnels. The projects would be completed in five years and these will be fully Centre-funded.The tunnels are aimed at bypassing difficult stretches of NH-244 that are frequently affected by snowfall, landslides and adverse weather, disrupting traffic and isolating several areas during the winter months. NEW DELHI: Cabinet Friday approved two strategic tunnel projects and the approach roads on NH-244 in J&K at an estimated cost of around Rs 9,800 crore to provide all-weather connectivity between Kashmir Valley and Jammu region while improving access to Chenab Valley.The projects comprise Singhpora-Vailoo tunnel and Sudhmahadev-Dranga tunnel, along with their approach roads, on the Anantnag-Chenani corridor. These are expected to strengthen road connectivity in Doda, Kishtwar and Udhampur districts, and reduce travel time.While the 39-km Singhapora-Vailoo stretch will have 10-km unidirectional twin-tube tunnels, the 13-km Sudhmahadev–Dranga section will have 8-km twin tube tunnels. The projects would be completed in five years and these will be fully Centre-funded.The tunnels are aimed at bypassing difficult stretches of NH-244 that are frequently affected by snowfall, landslides and adverse weather, disrupting traffic and isolating several areas during the winter months. NEW DELHI: Cabinet Friday approved a revision to the shipping ministry’s captive waterfront policy to accelerate private investment by providing greater operational certainty and allowing govt entities to obtain waterfronts on a nomination basis.The revised Policy for Award of Waterfront and Associated Land to Port-Dependent Industries (Captive Policy) introduces a series of reforms aimed at improving operational flexibility and strengthening infrastructure development at major ports.The shipping ministry said the revised policy allows existing captive users to develop additional berths, jetties, terminals and Single Buoy Moorings (SBMs) to meet enhanced captive requirements.
