Which companies have their address at 2 Frognal Way, London NW3 6XE? What is the connection of that Indian neta with Brian Lovegrove and Ulrik McKnight? Everything will be revealed inside Parliament,” Dubey posted on X, piquing interest and sparking buzz hinting that Parliament might witness yet another showdown.Talking to reporters in Parliament complex, the Godda MP elaborated on his claim by saying that two individuals, Brian Lovegrove and Ulrik McKnight, linked to Backops Limited, were associated with hundreds of companies, including a few TV channels, all registered at the same address: a claim that implied that Backops Limited was not a genuine business enterprise. The BJP MP said that the MP in question had registered Backops Limited in the UK in 2003.”I intend to raise all these matters in Parliament: Who is this MP, and how did they register this company? File photo: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and BJP MP Tejasvi Surya NEW DELHI: BJP and its allies Tuesday lauded govt’s engagement with protesting students, asserted the youth believe in PM Narendra Modi’s ability to root out the menace of paper leaks and turned to Gen Z’s lingo to mock leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi as they mounted a sharp counterattack on the opposition in Lok Sabha.”I will tell you in Gen Z language. Because of this issue (protest), opposition thinks the youth are with them. There is no bigger ‘delulu’ than it. Gen Z knows if any govt is working, then it is Modi govt,” BJP MP Tejasvi Surya said, accusing rivals of spreading cynicism and anarchy, while Modi has used the crisis to launch root-and-branch reforms in the education system.Another party MP Anurag Thakur hit out at opposition parties for using students for their political gains and cited numerous incidents of paper leaks when they were in office in different states. When SP was in office in UP, the state service commission served the interest of one caste, and its chairperson Anil Yadav’s appointment was struck down by HC, he said, amid noisy protest by SP members.Thakur’s attack followed govt’s robust defence from another party MP Bansuri Swaraj, who was the first speaker from the alliance, as she accused the opposition of “selective outrage” over paper leaks, saying such incidents frequently happened during the Congress-led UPA’s term in office.Amid opposition’s jibes, she said it was not about whataboutery but calling out the opposition. Targeting Congress, NDA members were prompt in sympathising with the concerns expressed by protesting students, asserting govt has heard them and offering suggestions to govt.Shiv Sena’s Shrikant Shinde targeted Rahul over his protests, saying he sat on a dharna outside Modi’s residence as he thought he was “MIA” (missing in action) and suffered from ‘FOMO’ (fear of missing out), but no student joined his demonstration.TDP’s Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu suggested govt reform the burgeoning coaching system, suggesting it preyed on students’ aspirations. Its market is around Rs 56,000 crore and will zoom to Rs 1 lakh crore in 6-7 years, he said, adding education should not be profit-driven, a point backed by Shinde too.Alleging that opposition sent anti-social elements to the student protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar who used filthy language and abuses for Modi, the Shiv Sena member said the engagement with protesters underscored govt’s democratic commitment.”We did not confine ourselves to condemnation but took up the task of cleaning the system. Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on moral grounds and not because of you (opposition),” he said, praising a series of measures taken by govt to reform the examination system.Get the latest India News and Live updates. File photo: Supreme Court of India NEW DELHI: Taking a stern view of allegations that the Bihar govt is filling parts of three historic ponds in Darbhanga to create public amenities such as recreation spaces and stalls, Supreme Court on Tuesday warned the state govt “not to touch the water bodies under the garb of beautification” without its approval.A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta directed the state to immediately stall ongoing work related to ‘Beautification and Rejuvenation of Gangasagar, Digghi and Harahi Lake’ project. Although the state refuted allegations of encroachment and urged Supreme Court to allow the work to continue, describing it as an ambitious project worth more than Rs 100 crore, the bench refused to budge and ordered that no further work be carried out.”You can’t fill up water bodies under the garb of beautification. Do not touch the water ponds, keep your hands off and tell your officers not to touch the ponds,” it told advocate Manish Kumar, who was appearing for the state.‘Immediately halt work on 3 centuries-old lakes’TOI had reported on July 13, with photographs, that three ponds in Darbhanga were being filled with soil and boulders to make way for stalls and footpaths, despite opposition from local residents and environmentalists.Advocate Renu Prajapati, appearing for Darbhanga-based voluntary group Talab Bachao Abhiyan, informed the bench that the three ponds form part of a list of protected wetlands and that any construction on their banks would violate rules and earlier rulings of Supreme Court. She also pointed out that the state, in its own affidavit, had admitted that around four acres of the ponds would be filled under the project. The state claimed that no arbitrary filling of the water bodies was taking place and that the activity was highly restricted and meticulously planned “earth filling & stone pitching” work. “This process is a necessity to stabilise and strengthen the severely eroded embankments, directly executing the mandate of NGT’s order. Furthermore, soil-filling footprint is strictly limited – for instance, constituting exactly 1 acre out of the 37.7-acre Harahi site, 1.42 acres out of the 50.9 acres at Digghi Lake, and 1.69 acres out of 44.2 acres at Gangasagar Lake,” the state’s affidavit stated. After a brief hearing, Supreme Court directed the govt to stop the work and ensure that the area of the ponds remain intact and is not reduced by filling.Justifying the project, the state said the integration of public amenities is aimed at managing footfall, ensuring public hygiene, and preventing future degradation.Supreme Court was hearing a plea filed by retired academicians, environmentalists and concerned citizens, seeking urgent intervention to halt filling of three historic ponds in Darbhanga – all 800-900 years old and integral to the city’s identity.Since the state is acting in contravention of these orders and no remedy remains, petitioner is constrained to approach the court seeking urgent direction to stop further filling of ponds, remove encroachments in and around the three Darbhanga ponds, and restore them to their original position as depicted in maps of 1868 & 1960,” the petition stated. In response, the state submitted: “To tackle unregulated access that historically turned the lakes into garbage dumps, the project provides structured public utility interfaces, including 11 designated bathing ghats, five changing rooms, and seven toilet blocks to eliminate open defecation and water contamination.”Get the latest India News and Live updates.
