Mamata Banerjee NEW DELHI: Amid reports of infighting, TMC supremo and former West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee hit back at rebel leaders while saying that the party is “not for its leaders but it is for its workers”. Speaking hours after TMC expelled two MLAs for ‘anti-party activities’, Mamata said that the party is “better off” without the rebel MLAs.”There may be some people who take advantage of situations, but those who thought such people were their assets have left, and we are better off without them. We will rebuild the party anew. TMC is not for its leaders; it is for its workers. As long as the workers remain with us, that is what matters. For so long, some people enjoyed power, and now that we have lost, they immediately seem to have reached an understanding with another party,” she said, as quoted by news agency ANI.Also read | TMC’s missing MLAs, statewide arrests and protest plans: What’s going on”TMC will become even stronger. Today, those who are making big claims that party leaders are not standing by the workers are spreading false information. Complete lawlessness is prevailing- even Hitler did not do such things. There are no words left to describe this situation, because when language itself fails, it means oppression has crossed all limits. You cannot weaken TMC by intimidating or bribing a few MLAs and MPs; in fact, this is only making the party stronger,” she added.Ramping her attack on the Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government, Mamata claimed that TMC workers were not being allowed to step outside, and alleged that the party’s offices were being vandalised.Calling the attack on party MP and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee “shocking”, the former Bengal CM alleged that doctors, hospitals were “instructed not to provide treatment.””The way you assaulted the MP of the second-largest opposition party is shocking. Doctors were called, yet hospitals were allegedly instructed not to provide treatment. What kind of absurd and authoritarian conduct is this?… The people at Belle Vue used to bow at my feet. You had close ties and dealings with the Birlas and the Lodhas, and you used to bow before them… Our Mayor took care of everything. Six months ago, we renewed Apollo’s license,” she said.Mamata further urged the students to protest alleging “many discrepancies” in the NEET exam.”NEET exam had many discrepancies; students spine of the society and must protest,” she said.Mamata’s comments came as the TMC faces its biggest crisis in a decade after the poll drubbing in West Bengal assembly polls and internal discord in the party.Furthermore, party leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Kunal Ghosh were attacked in Bengal, with the TMC alleging BJP involvement.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Photo credit: PTI NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday responded to discussions surrounding his recent choice of attire, saying the black-and-white suit he has been wearing symbolises transparency and simplicity.Addressing a rally in Tiruchirappalli, Vijay said questions had been raised about his decision to wear a suit, adding that such attire was not reserved for people holding positions of authority.“Many people have been talking about the new suit that I have been wearing recently. Are we not allowed to wear a coat and suit? Is it meant only for people in positions of authority? There is nothing like that,” he said.Explaining the significance of the colours, Vijay said he had deliberately chosen black and white to reflect his approach to public life.“I am not wearing many colours. It is just black and white, like all our hearts. The choice of these colours is to show that I will remain transparent and simple in everything, just like black and white,” he said. The chief minister also referred to the symbolism associated with the black colour but said it did not require further explanation.“As for what the black colour signifies and whom it represents, I do not think I need to explain it, as everyone already knows,” he said.Vijay said he preferred to focus on his work rather than engage in prolonged public commentary. “I am not someone who gives lengthy explanations or speaks unnecessarily. As people know, I usually speak for less than 20 minutes at most meetings,” he said.He added that people had advised him to concentrate on governance and public service rather than respond to criticism. The Tamil Nadu CM said people often tell him, “You have come here to work for us, so focus only on that work. We will take care of those who keep talking about you.”Vijay visited Tiruchirappalli to thank voters of the Tiruchirappalli East Assembly constituency, from where he had won before subsequently resigning the seat.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. We need a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state,” he said.Committee formed to gather feedbackThe chief minister said the state government, drawing inspiration from states that have already adopted the UCC, has constituted a committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to collect suggestions from people belonging to all religions across different districts of Madhya Pradesh.”The Madhya Pradesh government, inspired by the adoption of UCC in Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam, is committed to implementing UCC,” Yadav said.According to news agency ANI, he said the committee includes scholars from various backgrounds and has been tasked with compiling public suggestions to help expedite the process of implementing the code.”The goal is to compile these suggestions and expedite the implementation of UCC in Madhya Pradesh. Madhya Pradesh wishes that it should be implemented and we will be proud our government will move in this direction,” he said.Yadav added that a dedicated website has been launched to collect public feedback and urged residents to share their views on the proposed legislation.”A website has been launched to collect public suggestions, and I appeal to the public to contribute their thoughts on the matter on it,” he said.MP follows UCC push in other BJP-ruled statesThe chief minister said Madhya Pradesh was among the most suitable states for implementing the Uniform Civil Code and reiterated the government’s commitment to moving forward with the proposal under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement comes as several BJP-ruled states have advanced UCC legislation in recent years.Uttarakhand became the first state to pass a Uniform Civil Code Bill in February 2024. Gujarat followed by clearing its UCC legislation through a voice vote in March 2026 after a marathon debate in the Assembly. Most recently, Assam passed its Uniform Civil Code Bill on May 27, becoming the first northeastern state and the third BJP-ruled state to move ahead with such legislation. The law seeks to establish a common civil framework governing marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships irrespective of religion.Key provisions of the Assam legislation include a ban on polygamy, mandatory registration of marriages and live-in relationships, and penalties for non-compliance.Separately, Yadav chaired a review meeting of the women and child development department at the state secretariat on Monday.During the meeting, the chief minister reviewed the progress of various welfare schemes and directed officials to ensure their effective implementation.
