Photo credit: ANI Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has reignited attention on the decades-old India-Nepal border dispute after remarks in Parliament appeared to suggest that Nepal had learnt of “encroachments” involving Indian territory.Shah said that, “The Nepal government has officially sent a diplomatic note to India, mentioning the issue of encroachment of territories by India, including Lipulekh, and we have already received their response.””Both the countries have agreed to resolve the issue sitting together with the help of historians, surveyors and concerned experts through diplomatic means,” he said. Watch Nepal PM Invokes Britain In India Border Row, Says ‘We Have Also Encroached On Indian Areas’The comments triggered a row and prompted Nepal’s foreign ministry to issue a clarification, saying Balendra Shah was referring to cross-border occupation and no-man’s land encroachments rather than any formal territorial claim. The episode has once again put the spotlight on the long-running dispute over Kalapani, Lipulekh Pass and Limpiyadhura, a strategically sensitive region claimed by both countries. Why is there a dispute? At the centre of the disagreement is a remote Himalayan region located near the India-Nepal-China tri-junction.The dispute traces its origins to the Treaty of Sugauli, signed in 1816 after the Anglo-Nepal War. The treaty designated the Kali (Mahakali) River as Nepal’s western boundary. However, it did not clearly identify the river’s source, a gap that continues to shape competing territorial claims.Nepal argues that the river originates at Limpiyadhura, which would place Kalapani, Lipulekh and adjoining areas within Nepal. India maintains that the river begins near Kalapani, placing the disputed territory on the Indian side of the border.Historical maps from the early 19th century have been cited by Nepal to support its claim. India, however, points to administrative control exercised over the area since the British era, when maps gradually began treating the Kalapani spring as the river’s source. Following Independence in 1947, India inherited control of the territory. How did the issue become more prominent? The dispute gained strategic significance after China’s takeover of Tibet and the Sino-Indian war. Given the region’s proximity to Tibet and the importance of Lipulekh Pass, India strengthened its security presence in the area. For decades, the issue remained largely dormant. Nepal began raising it more formally in the 1990s and stepped up its objections in recent years.Kathmandu objected to the India-China understanding on Lipulekh Pass in 2015, protested India’s 2019 political map and opposed the inauguration of the Dharchula-Lipulekh road in 2020. In response, Nepal unveiled a new political map incorporating Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura within its territory.Since then, the dispute has remained a recurring point of friction, although both sides have repeatedly stated that it should be resolved through dialogue. Why is the region important for India? The disputed area sits at a strategically important junction connecting India, Nepal and China. Its high-altitude terrain offers commanding views of surrounding approaches, making it valuable from a surveillance and border management perspective.Control of the Kalapani sector allows Indian forces to monitor activity around Lipulekh Pass and adjoining areas near the Tibetan plateau. In mountain warfare, such vantage points are considered critical for observation, logistics and early warning.Lipulekh Pass itself is strategically significant because it can facilitate movement of personnel and supplies in a border contingency. India has invested in infrastructure projects in the region, including the Dharchula-Lipulekh road, to improve connectivity and access to forward areas. The pass also has religious importance. It serves as one of the key routes for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, undertaken annually by Indian pilgrims travelling to Tibet. As a result, India views the issue through the lens of border security, military preparedness, infrastructure connectivity and religious access, while Nepal continues to maintain that historical evidence supports its territorial claim.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosDelhi Police Bust Alleged ISI-Linked Terror Module Targeting Delhi And MumbaiDK Shivakumar Alleges Bengaluru Was Unfairly Denied IPL Final Hosting Rights After RCB’s Title WinAfter PM Balen Shah’s Controversial Remarks, India Hosts Nepal Opposition ChiefJoint Search Operation Continues In Rajouri Forests Following Inputs On Suspected TerroristsCommercial LPG Rates Increased, Domestic Cooking Gas Prices UnchangedCBSE Crisis Deepens Amid Fresh Allegations Of Student Data Exposure‘It Is Public Anger’: BJP Leaders Slam TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Over Sonarpur IncidentPoK Youth Crosses LoC To Meet Woman In North Kashmir, Apprehended By ArmyMamata Banerjee To Lead June 2 Kolkata Sit-In Over Alleged Attacks On Abhishek Banerjee, TMC LeadersVP Radhakrishnan Warns Indian Youth May Follow ‘Cockroach’ If Positive News Is Ignored123Photostories8 places near Delhi where temperatures are actually 25°C or below right nowEaten four times, and now stolen: Maurizio Cattelan’s famous ‘banana’ has vanished again and internet is absolutely losing it5 overnight desi beauty hacks for glowing skin this summerAnushka Sharma’s RCB victory ensemble looked simple at first, until we zoomed in on her Cartier watchWhy your compost bin smells bad: 7 Simple ways to compost kitchen waste without the odorOlive oil vs mustard oil: Which is better for heart health? From ‘Near Misses’ to ‘I Do’: 5 Relationship lessons we’re taking from Dua Lipa and Callum TurnerVirat Kohli Numerology: How Number 5, Master Number 33 and Raj Yoga Shaped King Kohli’s SuccessSonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s penthouse is a relaxing abode of minimalism with bright bohemian colours: Art inspirations to stealPancreatic cancer: New ‘breakthrough’ pill, Daraxonrasib, doubles life expectancy and survival for patients in trial123Hot PicksIndian Origin Pilot Helicopter CrashRajat PatidarWest Bengal CabinetHormuz crisisRussia Fuel Export BanDonald TrumpNEET Paper LeakTop TrendingMamata BanerjeeDelhi ITO FireWWE Clash Results and HighlightsGavin Yates-LyonsNorway ChessSupreme CourtMumbai Air India ColonyBSEB Bihar Sakashmta Pariksha Admit CardNTANEET Paper Leak

. NEW DELHI: Action is set to follow against officials in the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) as the ministry of education has initiated an internal crackdown over alleged irregularities in a controversial tender process and serious vulnerabilities in the board’s digital evaluation ecosystem.According to ministry sources, a detailed report from CBSE on the tender process linked to the board’s On Screen Marking (OSM) system has been sought. Sources said that the explanations provided so far have failed to fully satisfy the ministry, with accountability now likely to be fixed at multiple levels inside the board.“The ministry is taking strong action against those accountable. Responsibility will be determined,” a senior official said. Sources added that “heads are likely to roll” if procedural lapses or negligence are established. The controversy surrounding the OSM tender escalated after allegations surfaced that eligibility conditions and technical criteria were modified across multiple rounds of bidding before Hyderabad-based Coempt Edu Tek finally emerged as the successful bidder. Critics and opposition leaders questioned whether procurement norms were diluted to favour a particular company, especially after complaints began surfacing over blurred answer sheets, missing pages and technical glitches during the reevaluation process.CBSE has rejected allegations of wrongdoing and maintained that the tender process followed General Financial Rules and established procurement procedures. However, the controversy deepened after ethical hackers and independent developers flagged vulnerabilities in systems linked to the board’s digital evaluation infrastructure.Ministry officials said the weaknesses became more serious because CBSE does not yet maintain a comprehensive digital repository architecture for answer sheets and related examination records. The absence of robust archival and cybersecurity systems is now being examined separately as part of a wider review of the board’s digital preparedness. The ministry has meanwhile engaged experts from IITs to plug technological gaps, strengthen cybersecurity safeguards and conduct audits of the reevaluation portal architecture. CBSE has been directed to fortify the system and ensure that all reevaluation requests are processed through a secure and transparent mechanism.Officials stressed that students’ interests would remain protected and that the reevaluation process would continue under enhanced monitoring and supervision.About the AuthorManash Pratim GohainManash Pratim Gohain is a seasoned journalist with over two decades at The Times of India, where he has built a rich body of work spanning education policy, politics, and governance. Images/Agencies NEW DELHI: The Congress party on Monday attacked the Centre after commercial LPG cylinder prices were increased by up to Rs 53.50 from June 1, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of burdening people with rising costs. The opposition party alleged that ‘Inflation Man Modi’ had once again ‘cracked the whip’ by raising LPG prices. The attack came after the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder was increased across major cities. In Delhi, the price was raised by Rs 42 to Rs 3,113.50, while in Kolkata it went up by Rs 53.50 to Rs 3,255.50. The price revision applies to commercial cylinders used by hotels, restaurants and businesses. There has been no change in domestic cooking gas cylinder prices. The price of a 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinder was also increased by Rs 11 and now costs Rs 821.50 in Delhi.Targeting the government over the latest revision, the Congress party shared a post on X and alleged that commercial LPG prices had risen sharply over the past five months.”‘Inflation Man’ Modi has cracked the whip again. Today, he hiked the commercial cylinder by ₹53.50,” the party wrote. The Congress claimed that commercial LPG cylinder prices have increased by a cumulative Rs 1,571.50 since the beginning of the year. According to the party, the latest hike of Rs 53.50 on June 1 follows successive increases in January, February, March, April and May.The party further alleged, “In just 5 months, the commercial cylinder has become about 1,572 rupees more expensive, and the year isn’t even over yet. Modi’s extraction continues.”In a separate post, Congress also criticised the increase in the price of 5-kg LPG cylinders, claiming consumers had been encouraged to switch to smaller cylinders only to face higher prices later.”‘Inflation Man’ Modi has also made the 5 kg small LPG cylinder more expensive,” the party wrote.Congress claimed that the price of the small cylinder had increased by a total of Rs 272 in the last month.”First, ‘Inflation Man’ told the public to buy the small cylinder, then started the extortion,” the party further wrote. The latest LPG price hike comes as the Centre reviews India’s fuel security strategy following supply disruptions linked to tensions in West Asia. The government has asked state-run oil marketing companies to work towards maintaining LPG reserves equivalent to at least 30 days of demand. However, the Centre has maintained that there is no shortage of fuel in the country. Officials have said India has sufficient stocks of petrol, diesel, LPG, crude oil and natural gas, while domestic refineries are operating at optimum levels and LPG production remains at record highs.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
