File pics NEW DELHI: As govts and technology companies across the world race to dominate the AI revolution, a parallel global debate is steadily gaining ground – who will ensure that AI remains accountable to human values rather than being driven solely by profit, speed and geopolitical competition? That broader concern now appears to connect two very different personalities: PM Narendra Modi and Pope Leo XIV.In a sweeping encyclical on the future of AI, Pope Leo XIV warned against reducing human beings to “data and performance” and cautioned that technology should not become an instrument of domination, exclusion or dehumanisation.Months before, Modi, speaking at AI Summit in Delhi, had argued technology must “serve humanity, not replace it” and called for AI systems that are human-centric, ethical, trusted and inclusive. He has since reiterated his pitch for human-centric AI and for not allowing human agency to be overwhelmed by dizzying breakthroughs. Both, despite speaking from very different institutional and ideological spaces, have increasingly framed AI as a question not just of innovation, but of human dignity, accountability and public welfare.Modi had argued the key challenge before policymakers was to ensure AI remained “human-centric rather than machine-centric”. He also called for international frameworks built around safety and safeguards against misuse. The Vatican document raises similar concerns about concentration of tech power, algorithmic bias and unequal access to AI. It warns that if tech and computing resources remain concentrated in the hands of a few corporations or countries, existing inequalities could deepen further. The overlap reflects how global AI conversation is shifting beyond questions of technological capability and market dominance towards ethics, accountability, inequality and public welfare. The convergence is notable because it reflects an emerging international consensus that AI governance cannot remain limited to technology companies or strategic rivalries among major powers alone. As AI systems become more deeply embedded in everyday life, the debate is no longer only about how fast the technology develops, but also about who shapes its rules, priorities and ethical boundaries.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos‘It Is Public Anger’: BJP Leaders Slam TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Over Sonarpur IncidentPoK Youth Crosses LoC To Meet Woman In North Kashmir, Apprehended By ArmyMamata Banerjee To Lead June 2 Kolkata Sit-In Over Alleged Attacks On Abhishek Banerjee, TMC LeadersVP Radhakrishnan Warns Indian Youth May Follow ‘Cockroach’ If Positive News Is Ignored‘INDIA Stands United’: Abhishek Banerjee Thanks Rahul Gandhi For Support After Sonarpur AttackKunal Ghosh Targets TMC Leaders Over Silence On Abhishek Banerjee Attack, Sparks Internal DebateNepal PM Invokes Britain In India Border Row, Says ‘We Have Also Encroached On Indian Areas’Rahul Gandhi Meets CBSE Student Vedant, Mocks ‘Anti-National’ And ‘Deep State Agent’ AllegationsKalyan Banerjee Alleges Assault Near Chanditala Police Station, TMC-BJP Face Off Intensifies In WBLeaked Audio Allegedly Shows Mamata Berating Hospital CEO After Attack On Abhishek Banerjee123PhotostoriesMeet 5 of the world’s most colourful dog breedsCotton vs mulmul: Key differences and which one to choose this summerThese 5 simple exercises can help women build muscle and boost fitness without a gymJune is a star-studded month: 5 celebrities whose birthdays fall this monthDivyanka Tripathi shares emotional moments from twin boys’ birth; Delivery room glimpses to Harshdeep Kaur singing “Chanda Hai Tu” for the newborns’Stranger Things’ to ‘Game of Thrones’: Series that gained popularity owing to their conspiracy theoriesWhy does postpartum hair fall happen?Causes, treatment, and effective ways to manage it7 powerful reverse psychology tricks that usually work6 types of litchi available in India and how to pick the sweetest one at the market22-year-old influencer dies after dealing with depression and anxiety: 7 things women should do before reaching a breaking point123Hot PicksRCB vs GT IPL Final LiveVinesh PhogatMonsoon ForecastHenry Nowak murderFrancisco CerundoloDonald TrumpGold price predictionTop TrendingDK ShivakumarSpursUP CNET Admit CardVinesh PhogatNorway ChessSupreme CourtMumbai Air India ColonyBSEB Bihar Sakashmta Pariksha Admit CardNTANEET Paper Leak

NEW DELHI: Indians remained the third largest applicants for Schengen visas globally in CY 2025, with 11.5 lakh did so with a rejection rate of 15.8%. Chinese were the largest applicants at 18 lakh with a rejection rate of 4.1%, followed by nationals of Turkey (12.5 lakh) with a rejection rate of 14.6%, according to data released by the European Commission (EC). “The top five applicant countries remained largely unchanged,” the EC says, with applicants from Russia (6.8 lakh) and Morocco (6.2 lakh) being at the court and fifth spots.Despite soaring international airfares and the rupee’s steep depreciation since last year, which have together made foreign travel more expensive, 2025 saw 4% more Indians applying for Schengen visas than in 2024. The rejection rate also climbed from 15% to 15.8% for Indian applicants in this period.“After the budget-friendly and closer to home Middle East and Southeast Asia, Europe has been top of the list for Indian globetrotters with its varied attractions, including Switzerland, Greece, Amsterdam, France and others. We are now seeing a rising trend of sports tourism with a significant number of Indians going to watch matches there,” said Rajesh Magow, co-founder and group CEO at MakeMyTrip.Among EU and Schengen-associated consulates, Switzerland saw the maximum applications in India at almost 2.3 lakh and a not too high country-specific rejection rate of 13.6%. This was followed by France at over 2 lakh, Germany at 1.5 lakh, the Netherlands at just under lakh, and Sain at about 91,000. The big other big magnets for visa applicants included the embassies of Italy, Austria, Greece, Belgium and Sweden.“Switzerland and France (the top two embassies in terms of getting Schengen visa applications in India) have really smoothened visa application here in terms of both getting dates and then the turnaround time in terms of getting the stamped passport back. While the overall turnaround time is 15 working days for Schengen states, Switzerland and France return in 7-10 days. Italy has a major issue in date availability,” said a leading travel agent who did not wish to be named. At 46.5%, the highest rejection rate for Indians was in SloveniaOverall, 3.3 crore Indians had travelled abroad in CY 2025 — 6% more than 2024 and 21.5% more than pre-Covid 2019. Their top five destinations, according to government data, were: UAE (86 lakh), Saudi Arabia (34 lakh), Thailand (22 lakh), USA (20 lakh) and Singapore (15 lakh).According to the European Commission, the EU and Schengen-associated consulates globally received nearly 1.2 crore applications for short-stay visas in 2025 and over a crore visas were granted. While more than CY 2024, both the number of applications and visas granted were below the pre-Covid levels.“Over 1 crore visas were issued in 2025 —a 3% increase from 2024 (97 lakh), but still short of the 1.5 crore granted in 2019. The global refusal rate held steady at 14.8%, unchanged from 2024, though some countries saw significant fluctuations. Refusals fell in Russia (6.4%, down from 7.5%), Algeria (31%, down from 35%), and Ethiopia (34%, down from 36.1%), but rose sharply in Cape Verde (21.4%, up from 13.4%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (40.1%, up from 29.9%), Senegal (51.9%, up from 46.8%), and Burundi (53.4%, up from 40%),” says the EC.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideos‘It Is Public Anger’: BJP Leaders Slam TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee Over Sonarpur IncidentPoK Youth Crosses LoC To Meet Woman In North Kashmir, Apprehended By ArmyMamata Banerjee To Lead June 2 Kolkata Sit-In Over Alleged Attacks On Abhishek Banerjee, TMC LeadersVP Radhakrishnan Warns Indian Youth May Follow ‘Cockroach’ If Positive News Is Ignored‘INDIA Stands United’: Abhishek Banerjee Thanks Rahul Gandhi For Support After Sonarpur AttackKunal Ghosh Targets TMC Leaders Over Silence On Abhishek Banerjee Attack, Sparks Internal DebateNepal PM Invokes Britain In India Border Row, Says ‘We Have Also Encroached On Indian Areas’Rahul Gandhi Meets CBSE Student Vedant, Mocks ‘Anti-National’ And ‘Deep State Agent’ AllegationsKalyan Banerjee Alleges Assault Near Chanditala Police Station, TMC-BJP Face Off Intensifies In WBLeaked Audio Allegedly Shows Mamata Berating Hospital CEO After Attack On Abhishek Banerjee123PhotostoriesWhy more young adults are developing heart disease: The hidden impact of sitting, stress and urban pollutionThought of the day, inspired by the Bhagavad Gita: “The strongest people are not ruled by emotions”Meet 5 of the world’s most colourful dog breedsCotton vs mulmul: Key differences and which one to choose this summerThese 5 simple exercises can help women build muscle and boost fitness without a gymJune is a star-studded month: 5 celebrities whose birthdays fall this monthDivyanka Tripathi shares emotional moments from twin boys’ birth; Delivery room glimpses to Harshdeep Kaur singing “Chanda Hai Tu” for the newborns’Stranger Things’ to ‘Game of Thrones’: Series that gained popularity owing to their conspiracy theoriesWhy does postpartum hair fall happen?Causes, treatment, and effective ways to manage it7 powerful reverse psychology tricks that usually work123Hot PicksRCB vs GT IPL Final LiveVinesh PhogatMonsoon ForecastHenry Nowak murderFrancisco CerundoloDonald TrumpGold price predictionTop TrendingDK ShivakumarSpursUP CNET Admit CardVinesh PhogatNorway ChessSupreme CourtMumbai Air India ColonyBSEB Bihar Sakashmta Pariksha Admit CardNTANEET Paper Leak

Representative image NEW DELHI: Enumeration for Phase 3 of special intensive revision (SIR) – which shall cover over 37.7 crore electors across 16 states and UTs in all under different schedules – has started in Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim and Manipur. The exercise will verify the eligibility of around 3.7 crore electors across the four states, based on three key criteria as per Article 326 of the Constitution: being a citizen of India, not less than 18 years of age, and not disqualified under any law.As of May 14, 2026, the number of electors stood at 3.3 crore in Odisha, 20.9 lakh in Manipur, 8.7 lakh in Mizoram and 4.7 lakh in Sikkim. Manipur is due for assembly polls early next year, along with Goa, UP, Uttarakhand and Punjab. The enumeration phase in Odisha, Mizoram, Sikkim and Manipur, which started on Saturday, will continue till June 28. As per the order issued by EC on May 14, eligible electors whose enumeration forms are received by electoral registration officers by June 28 will be included in the draft poll rolls to be published on July 5. This will be followed by a month-long window for filing claims and objections, which shall end on Aug 4. The claims and objections are to be settled by Sept 2 at the latest, followed by publication of the final poll rolls for four states on Sept 6.”All eligible electors are requested to participate in the SIR process and cooperate with poll officials during the house-to-house visits,” EC said on Sunday.Phase 3 of SIR comes in the wake of SC’s ruling upholding SIR exercise and all related procedures and processes. SC, in the order issued last week, validated EC’s mandate to examine the citizenship of a person for the limited purpose of inclusion in the poll rolls.About the AuthorBharti JainBharti Jain is senior editor with The Times of India, New Delhi.
