Photo credit: PTI NEW DELHI: In a bid to revive Congress organisational strength, party leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday told district presidents that hard work and direct public engagement, rather than sycophancy, will help the party grow, as he urged party leaders to reconnect with people at the grassroots level, party sources said.While addressing the concluding session of a 10-day training camp for Congress district presidents from Rajasthan and Delhi in Pushkar, Gandhi praised coordination among Rajasthan Congress leaders and described the working relationship between the Pradesh Congress Committee leadership and the Leader of Opposition as a positive example for the party, according to Congress leaders, PTI reported.He described Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Dotasra and Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Tikaram Jully as a “Jai-Veeru ki jodi”.The Congress had witnessed internal infighting in Rajasthan involving the camps of Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot before its defeat in the 2023 Assembly elections.The leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha said party workers must remain connected to public issues and stand with the poor and marginalised in cases of injustice.He spent more than five hours at the camp and held interactive sessions on organisational strengthening, teamwork, ideology and public outreach, the sources said.Gandhi urged district presidents not to limit themselves to organisational roles but to build direct contact with citizens. He said rebuilding public trust was essential for strengthening the Congress and expanding its support base.He added that growth within the party should be based on commitment and service rather than personal loyalty to senior leaders. Senior leaders from the factions led by Uddhav Thackeray and deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde have suggested that the bigger challenge facing them is no longer each other, but the BJP’s growing dominance in Maharashtra politics.At least two senior leaders from both the rival Shiv Sena factions have publicly backed the idea of a reunion between the camps led by Shinde and Thackeray, arguing that the BJP poses an existential threat to both parties, as per news agency PTI.The remarks came from Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve and senior Shiv Sena leader Abdul Sattar, who suggested that the time may be right for the estranged factions to come together nearly four years after the party’s split.Responding to a question on whether the two factions should reunite, Danve said, “I feel so on several occasions. But there is no point in my alone wanting it.”Sattar echoed the sentiment, saying, “This is the time to unite.”Leaders point to BJP’s growing dominanceDanve argued that the BJP is systematically weakening its regional allies, including both the Shiv Sena and the NCP.“A big fish swallows small fish. File photo NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday raised concerns over the activities of armed groups operating near the India-Myanmar border and the impact of Myanmar’s internal conflict on Indian border communities during talks with Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi.Speaking at a special briefing after the high-level bilateral meeting, foreign secretary Vikram Misri said PM Modi highlighted the spillover effects of the conflict in Myanmar, including cross-border security challenges and the influx of refugees into India.“This issue was raised by the Prime Minister today in the conversation and he emphasised this point: that these groups, their activities continue around our borders. And in response, the actions of the Myanmar army against them also happen very close to the borders,” Misri said.He added that military operations near the border and the activities of armed groups have affected people living on the Indian side.“It has a lot of impact on the people living on this side, the Indian side of the border. So sometimes, there can be some damage there, or as you also said, many refugees come to our side from across that border,” he said.PM urges protection of Indians residing near borderMisri said PM Modi urged Myanmar authorities to ensure that military operations near the frontier do not cause harm to civilians living in India.“The Prime Minister said that about this, the Myanmar army and the authorities there in Myanmar should pay attention to this, and this action should be done in such a way that there is no loss, especially to the people living on the Indian side,” he said, as reported by news agency ANI.The refugee issue also figured prominently in the discussions. Misri acknowledged that people fleeing the conflict in Myanmar have entered India’s northeastern state of Mizoram.“We all know that refugees have come to Mizoram for some time because of this reason,” he said.According to Misri, the process of returning refugees is complicated but mechanisms already exist between the two countries. “There is a system to send the refugees back; there is a mechanism for it. And the authorities of both countries are in contact with each other as to how they will be sent back,” he said.He added that Myanmar authorities do not view those who crossed into India as permanent refugees and expect them to return once conditions improve.“The Myanmar government also believes that these people have not come as permanent refugees.
