But after the third round, Mamata bounced back. She established her dominance by the seventh round, at one point leading by more than 19,000 votes – triggering murmurs that the contest might tilt decisively in her favour. That perception, however, proved short-lived. Adhikari, claiming Mamata’s surge was driven by votes from a minority-dominated pocket, mounted a rapid comeback. By the 12th round, the gap shrunk to just over 7,000 votes and later tightened further to 5,300, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish that echoed the intensity of their 2021 face-off, where Mamata lost to Adhikari in Nandigram. She’d won Bhowanipore in a bypoll later that year.Tensions peaked further Monday when TMC alleged that its Bhowanipore counting agents had been attacked by BJP and pushed out. The chief minister, who earlier appealed to her workers to “fight like a tiger cub” and not to leave the counting tables till sunset, rushed to the venue. As her convoy reached the centre around 3.30pm, BJP supporters erupted in chants of “thief, thief” and “go back,” turning the stretch into a cauldron of hostility. Adhikari arrived around the same time. TMC general secretary and Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, too, reached the site amid allegations that some BJP supporters spat in his direction and hurled abuses before he was forced to move out. Also Read |’Immoral, illegal’: Mamata Banerjee alleges BJP ‘looted’ more than 100 seats; vows to ‘bounce back’Mamata stayed at the centre till 8pm before she was escorted out by central forces. Arunava Sen of the All India Trinamool Congress defeats Pramanshu Rana of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bagnan, winning by a margin of 11,316 votes after all 20 rounds of counting.Bagnan in Howrah district has been represented by Arunava Sen (Raja) of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He won the 2021 election with 106,042 votes (53per cent vote share), defeating BJP’s Anupam Mallik’s 75,922 votes (38per cent), by a margin of 30,120 votes. Key issues include rural infrastructure gaps—roads, drainage and bridges—across Bagnan‑I and Bagnan‑II blocks, alongside irrigation and better market access for paddy, vegetable and betel leaf cultivators. Demand for expanded government health and education facilities, drinking water security, and employment opportunities beyond informal labour in peri‑urban areas near Uluberia and Howrah are also prominent local concerns. Arunava Sen has held the seat for TMC since 2011, building on earlier Congress and CPI(M) dominance (Akkel Ali Khan won in 2006), turning Bagnan into a reliable Trinamool pocket despite BJP’s growing challenge. The constituency falls under the Uluberia Lok Sabha seat, retained by TMC’s Sajda Ahmed in 2024 with a margin of 2,18,673 votes, reinforcing party alignment from Assembly to Parliament.Follow the latest election results 2026, live updates, winner lists, constituency-wise results, party-wise trends and full coverage for Tamil Nadu election results, West Bengal election results, Kerala election results, Assam election results and Puducherry election results results on Times of India.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
