The farmers’ body said millions of farmers across the country had high expectations from the budget, but once again those hopes were dashed. In a statement issued after the budget presentation, the BKU (Charuni) media in-charge Rakesh Kumar Bains said the government focused heavily on technology, artificial intelligence, digital platforms and futuristic plans in its budget speech, while completely ignoring the immediate and pressing issues faced by farmers.Budget 2026’Nothing for common man, Bengal’: Mamata slams Centre’s ‘Humpty Dumpty’ budgetUnion Budget 2026-27: What gets cheaper, what gets costlierLatest income tax slabs FY 2026-27: What are the income tax slabs, rates under new and old tax regime after Budget 2026? It also criticised the absence of concrete measures for adequate compensation for crop losses caused by natural disasters and the failure to enhance the amount under the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme.According to the BKU (Charuni), the annual assistance of Rs 6,000 provided under PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme has become inadequate in the present economic conditions and has effectively turned into a “mockery” for farmers. Despite repeated assurances by the government, no firm announcement was made in the budget to increase this amount. Similarly, the farm union expressed strong disappointment over the government’s continued silence on granting a legal guarantee to MSP, calling it a betrayal of farmers’ trust. The farmers’ union alleged that while the budget provides relief to corporates and promotes policies on paper, it fails to address the concerns of farmers who toil in the fields. “Farmers do not need Apps or speeches; they need fair prices, security and dignity,” the statement said. The BKU (Charuni) has demanded that the government immediately provide a legal guarantee for MSP, increase the PM-Kisan assistance to at least Rs 12,000 per year, implement loan waivers along with affordable credit facilities for farmers, and reform the crop insurance scheme to make it simpler, transparent and farmer-friendly.Warning of future action, BKU Charuni said that if the government continues to ignore farmers’ issues, it will not hesitate to adopt agitational measures to protect farmers’ interests.About the AuthorJaskaran SinghDaily news reporting from the field of agriculture, farmers, crime, health, environment, education, politics, and feature articles from Ambala (with coverage of Kurukshetra & Yamunanagar).Read MoreEnd of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosUnion Budget 2026 Bets Big On Rare Earths, Chips & Orange Economy: Nirmala Sitharaman’s Full SpeechBudget 2026: “Post Op Sindoor, Expected More…” FICCI President Anant Goenka Flags Defence GapsBudget 2026 Overview: What Citizens And Businesses Should KnowBudget 2026 Sets Long-Term Direction For India’s Economic Growth: KidwaiGrowth Momentum Will Continue Says FM Sitharaman As Budget 2026 Bets On Tech Cities And Reforms“All Talk, No Solutions” Oppn Slams Centre Over Economy, JobsUnion Budget 2026: FM Sitharaman Announces Key Customs Duty Relief Across Key SectorsPM Modi Calls Budget 2026 Historic As Reforms Empower Youth Women And India’s Growth Push’Nothing For Bengal’: Mamata Banerjee Attacks ‘Humpty Dumpty’ Union Budget 2026 As Markets TumbleIn First Budget Since Sindoor, FM Sends Signal On Security As Defence Outlay Jumps To ₹7.85L Crore123Photostories’Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’, ‘Pavitra Rishta’ and more: Most popular love stories of TV shows6 tips to bake a perfect cake in an air fryerUnion Budget 2026: Complete list of commodities that will get cheaper and costlier in the food and beverage industryUnion Budget 2026: 6 nuts that got attention of the government and whyRohit Shetty, Salman Khan, Rakesh Roshan: Bollywood celebs who faced gunshot incidentsNo one Killed Jessica’, ‘Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway’, ‘Veer-Zaara’: 5 fearless roles that prove Rani Mukerji is Bollywood’s ultimate Mardani!Union Budget 2026: From coconut to chocolate, things which have got attention in this year’s budget and whyTaylor Swift’s 7 most expensive possessionsCJ Roy death case: What remains unclear as the probe continues7 most memorable Grammy moments to rewind before the 2026 awards123Hot PicksBudget highlights 2026Budget Income Tax SlabUnion Budget 2026February 2026 bank changesIncome Tax CalculatorPublic holidays February 2026Bank Holidays februaryTop TrendingNirmala Sitharaman SareeMany Pacquiao vs Conor Height DifferenceBengaluru Worker Dead NewsMLB Trade RumorsDwyane Wade WifeSnowboarder Ryan Wedding CaseUnion Budget Speech LiveStock Market BudgetUnion Budget SpeechGold Silver Rate Today

Shashi Tharoor (PTI image) NEW DELHI: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday dismissed speculation of a rift within the party, asserting that he is on the same page with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. The statement comes after a recent closed-door meeting with the party’s top leadership.Referring to his meeting with Rahul Gandhi and Kharge, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said, “We’re on the same page. We’re moving forward determinately. I think it’s extremely important, both at the state level and at the national level, that Congress must represent not just an opposition party, but an alternative government.”Emphasising the party’s readiness to govern, Tharoor added, “An alternative government is what the people want to see, whether at the centre or the state. Budget 2026’Nothing for common man, Bengal’: Mamata slams Centre’s ‘Humpty Dumpty’ budgetUnion Budget 2026-27: What gets cheaper, what gets costlierLatest income tax slabs FY 2026-27: What are the income tax slabs, rates under new and old tax regime after Budget 2026? Check full details & FAQsWe need to stay together, work together and move forward together, and we’re doing that.”Tharoor’s remarks come after weeks of speculation about internal unease following his perceived sidelining at a Congress event in Kochi last month and his subsequent absence from a key Kerala strategy meeting chaired by Kharge. The tensions had triggered concerns within the party that the issue could snowball into a larger messaging problem ahead of the high-stakes Kerala elections. After weeks of visible discomfort, Kharge and Rahul Gandhi met Tharoor on Thursday in a detailed “redressal” meeting. The meeting, held in Kharge’s chamber in the Parliament House complex, lasted over an hour and forty-five minutes.Emerging from the meeting, Tharoor struck a conciliatory tone. Speaking to reporters, he said, “We had a discussion with my two party leaders, the LoP and the Congress president. We had a very good, constructive, positive discussion. All is good and we are moving together on the same page.”Sources told PTI that the discussion was “comprehensive”, covering a wide range of issues, with the leadership making time for a thorough exchange.Tharoor later reinforced the truce on social media, thanking Kharge and Gandhi for a “warm and constructive discussion” and reiterating that they were “all on the same page” as the party moves forward “in the service of the people of India”.Addressing speculation over the Congress’ chief ministerial face in Kerala, Tharoor categorically denied any such ambition. “That was never the issue. I am not interested in being the candidate for anything. At the moment I am already an MP, that is my job,” he said. The Congress leader also dismissed reports suggesting he might quit the party. “I can say that I am going to be in the Congress and that I am not going anywhere,” he said, adding that he would campaign extensively across Kerala’s 140 Assembly constituencies for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).Tharoor highlighted that he had campaigned in 56 constituencies in the last Assembly elections and hoped to cover even more this time. “It is very important that we send the right message to voters and have an opportunity to make a significant impact on people’s lives,” he said.Rejecting reports of discord, Tharoor described them as “exaggerated” and maintained that discussions within the party were healthy. “I see it in a positive way that one has an opportunity to discuss all issues very cordially and constructively in the spirit of camaraderie,” he said. The Congress is seeking to wrest power from the Left Democratic Front after a decade in opposition in Kerala. Party leaders acknowledge that unity will be critical as the BJP also looks to expand its footprint in the state.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
