NEW DELHI: Karnataka BJP leader on Sunday slammed Congress general secretary K C Venugopal over his remarks on the Bengaluru demolition drive, accusing him of interfering in the state’s administration and asking whether he was acting as a “super CM”.Leader of opposition in the Karnataka assembly, R Ashoka, said the state “deserves respect, autonomy and honest governance, not high-command theatrics,” further asserting that “Karnataka is not a colony of Rahul Gandhi and his coterie.”LoP Ashoka asked, “Who is K C Venugopal to intervene in the administration of Karnataka. Is he a Super CM, or does the Congress high command believe elected state governments function on Delhi diktats.”He stated that Karnataka is governed by a constitutionally elected chief minister and cabinet, not by an AICC general secretary. Expressing a party view is one thing, but issuing moral sermons and applying pressure on a state government amounts to “blatant overreach” and is an insult to federalism, the BJP leader added.Congress’ Venugopal expresses ‘serious concern’The BJP leader’s remarks came after Venugopal expressed “serious concern” over the demolition drive carried out by the Karnataka government in Kogilu village, which led to the eviction of several settlers.Earlier in a post on X on Saturday, Venugopal said he had spoken to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and conveyed that such actions should have been taken with “far greater caution”.He said he had conveyed “the AICC’s serious concern that such actions should have been undertaken with far greater caution, sensitivity, and compassion, keeping the human impact at the centre.””They have assured that they will personally engage with the affected families, put in place an appropriate mechanism for addressing grievances, and ensure rehabilitation and relief for those impacted,” Venugopal added.BJP alleges interventionAshoka questioned Venugopal’s selective intervention, asking whether he had shown similar concern when “medical and other waste from Kerala have been illegally dumped along Karnataka’s borders, threatening Bandipur, forest regions, public health, and wildlife”.”What’s more troubling is the rank hypocrisy. Has K C Venugopal ever shown the same urgency when medical and other waste from Kerala have been illegally dumped along Karnataka’s borders, threatening Bandipur, forest regions, public health, and wildlife? Has he spoken up for Karnataka’s environment, farmers, or border districts with the same concern and compassion,” he asked.”Silence there. Sermons here,” he said, adding that the outrage was not about humanity but about “Congress high command politics, Kerala appeasement, and election optics”, particularly when senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi represents Kerala in the Lok Sabha.”Karnataka’s dignity, self-respect and administrative authority cannot be compromised to please party managers sitting in Delhi. The people of this state did not vote for a remote-control government,” Ashoka said.Venugopal’s comments came following criticism from Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who described the demolitions in Bengaluru’s Fakir Colony and Waseem Layout as “extremely shocking and painful”.What did the Karnataka govt say?Earlier on Saturday, chief minister Siddaramaiah rejected Vijayan’s criticism, calling it “politically motivated” and reflective of a “lack of understanding of the factual situation”.”Several people had illegally erected makeshift shelters at the waste-disposal site in the Kogilu Layout near Yelahanka in Bengaluru. It is not a place suitable for human habitation. Despite issuing notices on multiple occasions directing the families to relocate, the residents failed to comply. Under these circumstances, it became unavoidable to clear the encroachment and vacate the site,” the Karnataka CM had said.Deputy CM Shivakumar also hit back, asking Vijayan to “not interfere” in Karnataka’s affairs. “The land which was cleared of encroachment was a solid waste pit. There are many health-related issues in the area due to this,” he said, adding that affected residents had been given opportunities to relocate.Kerala CM vs Karnataka CMEarlier in a Facebook post earlier, Vijayan accused the Karnataka government of following a “North Indian bulldozer justice model” and described the demolitions as “anti-minority aggressive politics”. He also questioned how a Congress-led government could justify forced evictions instead of ensuring housing for the poor, saying it was surprising to see such actions under a Congress administration.Responding to the criticism, Siddaramaiah rejected Vijayan’s remarks as “politically motivated” and based on a “lack of understanding of the factual situation”.”There is a fundamental difference between ‘bulldozer justice’ and the lawful removal of illegal encroachments. The criticism being made by Pinarayi Vijayan is politically motivated and reflects a lack of understanding of the factual situation,”the Karnataka CM said. What is the Karnataka eviction matter?According to reports, more than 200 houses in Waseem Layout and Fakir Colony in Kogilu village near Yelahanka were demolished last week as part of a drive by Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML). Reports said the houses were removed to clear encroachments for a proposed solid waste processing unit. BSWML, in a statement, said approximately 5 acres of land earmarked for it was encroached upon, with more than 150 temporary sheds and houses constructed on the site, TOI reported. The operation was carried out with police protection and involved multiple civic and administrative agencies.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. In 2025, women were no longer the footnote to the big story — they were the story. Across crises and celebrations, ballots and battlefields, podiums and boardrooms, women emerged as the decisive force shaping outcomes and narratives. This year ender traces how women became the X factor of 2025: from the symbolism and steel of Operation Sindoor, to the women voters who once again decided Bihar’s fate; from new women heads of state reshaping global politics, to athletes who carried India’s sporting year; and finally, to a woman who climbed into the world’s richest ranks, redefining economic power. These were not isolated moments. Together, they marked a year when women didn’t just influence events — they changed the balance.Pahalgam attack and Operation SindoorA newlywed wife, sitting silently beside her husband’s body — the image that came to define the Pahalgam attack.A terrorist strike. Twenty-six dead. All men.“Go, tell Modi,” a terrorist told a woman after shooting her husband.Operation Sindoor was the response. Its imagery was stark and deliberate — red and black, vermillion smeared like a warning. A symbol of vengeance, resolve, and the state’s answer to terror.”Terrorists dared to wipe ‘sindoor’ from the foreheads of our sisters; that is why India destroyed the very headquarters of terror,” PM Modi had said in his first address to the nation after the launch of the operation. The symbolism did not stop at words or posters. It took shape on the world stage when two women officers stepped forward to brief the global media on Operation Sindoor.Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika SinghTheir presence was widely seen as intentional messaging — women not just as victims or symbols, but as the face and force of India’s response to terror.Operation Sindoor also saw women in direct combat. In the Akhnoor sector along the IB, a six-member women’s BSF team led by Assistant Commandant Neha Bhandari defended forward posts under sustained Pakistani fire for three days and nights, forcing enemy positions across Sialkot to retreat. For several of the young recruits, it was their first combat test — marking a decisive shift from symbolism to frontline action.Nitish won Bihar, but credit goes to womenWomen decided Bihar’s verdict once again, delivering Nitish Kumar a victory that numbers make hard to dispute. While their support for the JD(U)-BJP government’s pro-women agenda has been steady since 2005, this election saw a decisive surge. The turnout told its own story. As many as 71.6% women voted, nearly nine percentage points higher than men, and a sharp rise from 59.7% in 2020.A Rs 10,000 cash transfer to over 1.5 crore women in the run-up to polls acted as a turbo-boost. Like Rakhi after Diwali, the ‘das-hazariya’ payout — along with the mobilisation of Jeevika Didis — became the catalyst for the NDA’s sweeping win.For many women, this loyalty has been shaped over two decades — beginning with schemes like free bicycles for schoolgirls in Nitish Kumar’s first term.In 2010, smiling girls cycling to school became the defining image of his landslide victory, much like women voters have shaped this one.Even contentious policies have found unlikely champions. Prohibition, despite widespread criticism from men, continues to draw strong backing from women, particularly the poor, who often credit it with tangible household benefits.Add to this structural reforms — 35% reservation for women in government jobs, 50% in local bodies, and the expansive Jeevika self-help group network — and the pattern is clear. In Bihar, elections may be fought by parties, but they are increasingly won by women. When women rose to ruleAcross continents in 2025, the ascent of women to the highest political office began to look less like an exception and more like a long-delayed correction. In March, Namibia’s Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in as the country’s first woman president. In a region where power has long been shaped by patriarchal traditions, her presidency carries the promise of something deeper: a recalibration of institutional culture, with greater emphasis on accountability, environmental stewardship, and gender-balanced governance. That same shift echoed months later in South America. In July, Suriname elected Jennifer Geerlings-Simons as its first woman president at a moment of economic uncertainty and cautious optimism, driven by newly discovered offshore oil reserves. A physician by training and a respected parliamentary leader, Geerlings-Simons embodies a quieter, steadier form of authority — one rooted in consensus-building and institutional continuity. Her victory underscored an important truth: the gender wave in politics is no longer confined to large economies or global power centres. It is reaching smaller, diverse nations where leadership had remained stubbornly homogeneous for decades.By October, the tremor reached East Asia. Sanae Takaichi’s elevation as Japan’s first female prime minister shattered one of the country’s most enduring political glass ceilings. In a system long dominated by men, her rise signalled a shift not only within party hierarchies but also in public expectations. For Japan, where women’s political representation has historically lagged, Takaichi’s appointment was as much a cultural moment as a political one — a sign that the contours of leadership are slowly expanding, allowing future generations of women to imagine themselves not at the margins of power, but at its very centre. Divya Deshmukh became the youngest Women’s World Cup champion in chess, while archer Sheetal Devi added a para-world title and earned selection to the able-bodied compound team purely on scores. In squash, Anahat Singh claimed the national spotlight by winning the SRFI Squash Indian Open, and in boxing, India’s women powered the country to seven of nine gold medals at the World Boxing Cup Finals, led by Nikhat Zareen. The Indian Blind Women’s Cricket Team won the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup for the Blind, while Stanzin Dolkar’s decisive goals earned India its first international bronze in women’s ice hockey. Football completed the surge, with the women’s national team qualifying outright for the AFC Asian Cup for the first time in over two decades, and the U-20 and U-17 sides also sealing continental berths. NEW DELHI: On the day the Congress marked its 140th foundation anniversary, senior leader Digvijay Singh’s remarks praising the RSS’s organisational strength drew divided reactions from the party leaders, raising fresh questions about potential internal discord. Some Congress leaders dismissed the idea that the RSS could offer any lessons to their party, while others subtly took veiled jibe at Singh.Congress Rift Out In Open? Digvijaya Singh’s Modi-RSS Praise Draws Jibes From BJP Amid CWC MeetDigvijay Singh sparked row after he shared a black-and-white photograph of Prime Minister Narendra Modi sitting on the floor near senior BJP leader LK Advani in Gujarat. Singh commented on the ability of grassroots workers to ascend through the ranks to become chief minister and eventually Prime Minister, attributing this to the “power of organization.”He tagged several senior Congress figures, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh, PM Modi, and the official Congress handles.”I found this picture on the Quora site. It is very impressive. In what way did the grassroots swayamsevak of RSS and the worker of Jan Sangh BJP sit on the floor at the feet of leaders and become the Chief Minister of the state and the Prime Minister of the country? This is the power of the organisation. Jai Siya Ram.” Singh’s X post read.Who said whatReacting to Singh’s remarks, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said that an organisation “known for Nathuram Godse” cannot teach anything to an organisation founded by Gandhi.”There’s nothing to learn from the RSS. What can an organisation known for Godse teach an organisation founded by Gandhi?” Khera said.Additionally, Congress MP Manickam Tagore launched a sharp attack on Digvijay Singh by sharing a video of an excellent own goal in a football match, writing, “Famous Self goal. We have one.”Later, he also added that there is “nothing to learn from Godse’s organisation other than Hate. Congress at 140 is still young, and fights hate.”Sachin Pilot said that the opposition party is united, but everyone has the right to their own opinion.”Congress party is united. The country needs a strong opposition. Our intention is to strengthen the organisation. In our party, we have the right to speak about our thoughts,” Pilot said.”He said whatever he had to, and after that, he also gave his clarification. All the Congress leaders have only one goal to strengthen Kharge and Rahul ji,” he added.Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor, known for ruffling feathers within Congress, distanced himself from Digvijay Singh’s remarks, saying, “We have a history of 140 years, and we can learn a lot from it. We can learn from ourselves, too,””There should be discipline in our organisation. Digvijay Singh can speak for himself,” he added. He, however, also said that organization must be strengthened within Congress.Calling Digvijay Singh a “friend”, Tharoor, when asked whether he had spoken to Singh since he made his remarks, said: “We are friends, and having a conversation is natural. The organisation must be strengthened, there is no question about it.”Digvijay Singh issues clarificationEarlier, Digvijay Singh had issued a clarification, saying, “I’ve been saying this from the beginning: I am opposed to the ideology of the RSS. They neither respect the Constitution nor the country’s laws, and it’s an unregistered organisation.””But I admire their organisational capacity because an organisation that isn’t even registered has become so powerful that the Prime Minister says from the Red Fort that it is the world’s largest NGO. If it’s an NGO, then where have your rules and regulations gone? But I admire their organisational capacity,” he added.Earlier this week, Singh had also praised Rahul Gandhi for his stance on socio-economic issues, giving him “full marks” while calling for internal reforms within the Congress. Drawing a parallel with Rahul Gandhi’s push for Election Commission reforms, Singh argued that the party itself needed similar changes. In another post on X, he wrote, “Rahul ji you are absolutely ‘Bang On’ in matters of Socio-Economic Issues. Full Marks. But now please look at Congress also. Like Election Commission needs Reforms, So Does Indian National Congress. You have started with ‘Sanghatan Srijan’ But we need more Pragmatic Decentralised Functioning.”He added, “I am sure you would do it because I know you can do it. Only problem is that it is not easy to ‘Convince’ you!!”Calls for organisational restructuring within CongressThis is not the first time when senior leaders in Congress have called for organisational restructuring. In December, former Odisha MLA Mohammed Moquim wrote to Sonia Gandhi, calling for “open-heart surgery” in the party and flagging a growing disconnect between the leadership and its workers. In his letter to Sonia Gandhi dated December 8, ex-Odisha MLA Mohammed Moquim highlighted six consecutive election losses in Odisha and three in Lok Sabha while also questioning the selection of Mallikarjun Kharge as the party’s leader, claiming that the 83-year-old veteran “is unable to resonate with India’s youth.”Similar concerns were also raised in the run-up to the Bihar assembly elections this year in November, where the distance between the “leadership” and the workers was on display during seat distribution talks.Earlier in 2020, a group of 23 senior leaders in the party had written a letter to Sonia demanding “collective and inclusive leadership” in the party. While some of these dissidents were expelled, others voluntarily left the party but nothing changed in the way Congress functioned. How BJP reactedMeanwhile, BJP alleged that Digvijay Singh’s praise for the organisational power of the BJP and the RSS was an “open dissent” against Rahul Gandhi’s leadership in the party. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that Gandhi was bringing his party “upside down” because he had been sidelined in the party.”It’s because our Narendra Modi is ‘guddri ke lal’ (diamond in the rough) and their leader is ‘Jawahar ke lal’ (great-grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru). Since our Narendra Modi has risen to top from bottom, he is taking the party (BJP) also to the top from bottom,” Trivedi told a press conference at the BJP headquarters here.In a swipe to Gandhi, he said, “Since their leader is ‘Jawahar ke lal’ who is now ‘side down from up’, he is bringing his party upside down.”BJP leader CR Kesavan termed the “autocratic and undemocratic” functioning of the Congress leadership.”Will Rahul Gandhi show courage & react to the shocking Truth Bomb dropped by Shri. Digvijay Singh’s tweet, which has totally exposed how Congress’ first family ruthlessly runs the party in a dictatorial manner, and also how autocratic & undemocratic this Congress leadership is?” Kesavan’s X post read.Digvijaya Singh later clarified that while he appreciates strong organisational structures, he remains firmly opposed to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”I support the organisation. I am against the RSS and Modi ji. You have misunderstood. I have praised ‘sangathan’. I was, am, and will remain a staunch opponent of the RSS and Modi. Is it a bad thing to strengthen and praise the organisation?” he said.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
