Tension flared in Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur as women attempted to offer prayers at a disputed mausoleum on Kartik Purnima. Police intervened, leading to a clash when some women tried to breach barricades. The group eventually performed prayers from a nearby lane, while authorities maintain the site’s status is sub judice. . NEW DELHI: Uttar Pradesh’s Fatehpur became tense on Wednesday evening when a group of women attempted to offer puja near a disputed mausoleum, leading to a clash with police. Police told news agency PTI that around 20 women carrying diyas and prayer materials reached the barricaded Maangi mausoleum site in Abunagar around 6 pm on the occasion of Kartik Purnima. A few women allegedly tried to remove or climb over the barricades when stopped by security personnel. This led to a heated argument with station house officer Tarkeshwar Rai. When they were unable to reach the disputed spot, the group performed their prayers and aarti from a nearby lane facing the structure. Videos showing the women arguing with police and performing puja from a distance have surfaced online.Earlier, BJP district president Mukhlal Pal had said that he and members of Hindu organisations planned to offer prayers at the site, pointing to carvings of a trident and lotus inside the structure as signs of its Hindu origin. The site, associated with Nawab Abu Samad, has been the subject of dispute for months, with Hindu groups claiming it was once a temple dedicated to ‘Thakur ji’ and had a Shivling. Videos from that time purportedly showed vandalism and hoisting of a saffron flag at the site. The site has been under strict security since August, when Hindu organisations demanded the right to pray there.Authorities have maintained that the matter is sub judice and have issued orders to prevent any activity that could disturb public order.A case has been registered at the Kotwali police station under Sections 121(1), 351(2), and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, based on a complaint from constable Manju Singh. The women, on the other hand, accused the police of misbehaviour and of preventing them from offering prayers.Additional superintendent of police Mahendra Pal Singh said the situation is currently peaceful, and extra police have been deployed to maintain calm.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
