Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday called for investment and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the state, stating that 2025 will be remembered for innovation in technology and data.In an open letter to UP citizens, CM Yogi said that preparations are underway to establish ‘AI City’ in Lucknow and Noida. He added that 10 lakh citizens are receiving AI training under the ‘AI Pragya’ initiative.In the letter shared on X, the Chief Minister said, “This is the time to enter the English year 2026. The year 2025 will be remembered for establishing new benchmarks of innovation in technology, AI, and data. Uttar Pradesh is forging new standards of forward-looking development. The reign of good governance in the state has empowered ‘Brand UP’ across the world. Uttar Pradesh has now become a state of trust for investors.””Preparations are underway to establish ‘AI City’ in Lucknow and Noida. A semiconductor unit is being constructed in Jewar at a cost of Rs 3,700 crore. The success of the data centre policy, made with the focus on ‘Swadeshi Centre’ and secure data, is beginning to be seen. Commercial use of five hyperscale data centre parks has begun. The target is to invest Rs 30,000 crore in the data centre sector,” CM Yogi added.Building on the idea of an ‘AI City’ in Lucknow, earlier this month, CM Yogi met with N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, and discussed investment and innovation opportunities in AI, IT, electronics, and defence manufacturing.Hailing the Artificial Intelligence Program for Resourcefulness, Awareness, Growth and Youth Advancement (AI Pragya), he said, “Software technology parks have been established in nine cities. We are also setting new records in drones, robotics, and mobile production. Ten lakh citizens are being given AI training through ‘AI Pragya’. Thousands of new jobs are being created,” the letter added.Concluding the letter, the Chief Minister urged the youth to resolve to educate five children about computers and AI in 2026.”I would like my young companions to take a special resolution for the year 2026. SRINAGAR: In a significant move that was promptly decried by the Opposition as a bid to help J&K’s “super elite” retain valuable real estate, particularly hotel owners in Gulmarg which includes a landmark property owned by CM Omar Abdullah’s cousin, the state assembly Wednesday admitted a private member’s bill introduced by a legislator from the governing National Conference that seeks to protect existing land leaseholders across the union territory.The bill, called land grants bill, was introduced by Tanvir Sadiq, an NC member.This is the first private member’s bill admitted by the assembly. It seeks to counter the Jammu and Kashmir Land Grants Rules, 2022, implemented by the J&K Lieutenant Governor’s administration under the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019. The 2022 rules bar extension of leases after expiry and provide for the auction of such properties through open bidding to any Indian citizen.Responding to the Bill, Omar said opposing it at the stage of introduction would restrict discussion in the House. He said he wanted a detailed debate after which the government would take a call on whether to support it.BJP and the Peoples Conference criticised the Bill outside the Assembly, accusing the government of safeguarding affluent stakeholders, particularly hotel owners in Gulmarg. PDP legislator Waheed Parra tore a copy of the Bill inside the House, alleging it was aimed at shielding hoteliers, particularly the Nedous hotel in Gulmarg, whose land leases had expired.Sadiq rejected the criticism, saying not a single BJP or PDP member opposed his “bill inside the House”. “But barely an hour later, the leader of opposition, Sunil Sharma, opposed it from Assam and their B-team, PDP, here suddenly discovered their voice.”“My bill is clear… legal and transparent land allotment protection of public land from Lakhanpur to Sonmarg, from Gulmarg to Kishtwar… this is about dignity and fairness for the people of J&K,” he said, adding that leasehold land across J&K, including for schools and shops, is impacted by 2022 rules.Sharma described the bill as protecting “elite interests”.People’s Conference president and MLA Handwara Sajad Lone alleged the bill overwhelmingly “favours Kashmir’s super elite while excluding the underprivileged”. He said the bill pertains to some of the most valuable real estate in Kashmir, which he estimated to be worth between Rs 70,000 crore and Rs 1 lakh crore or even more.Rules framed under Article 370 were restricting leases to permanent residents of J&K, while Article 35A prohibited people from outside from buying property in J&K and Ladakh. However, under the 2022 rules, leases of 55 out of 59 hotels in Gulmarg have expired, leaving property owners to face eviction and their properties to be put up for auction.On August 3, last year, the J&K administration under the LG took over the Nedous Hotel. The hotel was the first to be sealed after the Gulmarg Development Authority issued a 24- hour eviction notice to it.Nedous was the first hotel built in Gulmarg meadow in 1888. It was built by Michael Adam Nedou, a hotelier from Dubrovnik (now Croatia), who had earlier opened hotels in Lahore and Srinagar. His son, Michael Henry Nedou, known as Harry, converted to Islam and married Mir Jan, a local Gujjar Muslim woman. Their daughter, Akbar Jahan, would later marry Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, the grandfather of CM Omar Abdullah. NEW DELHI: Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has raised questions on the condition of the new Indian embassy building in Beijing – how it turned into an “uninhabitable” place, “extremely dilapidated, within a few years of renovation and despite incurring expenditure on a comprehensive annual maintenance contract (AMC).The embassy had shifted its offices and residential quarters for 16 senior officials to a new, renovated building premises in Jan 2012 from the old chancery premises that were vacated for redevelopment. Now, the embassy has proposed another expenditure of over Rs 17 crore to renovate the new premises.The “extremely dilapidated condition” of the new building came under the auditor’s scrutiny as the government had spent, besides incurring expenditure on renovation itself, on a five-year maintenance guarantee and a comprehensive AMC thereafter.In its audit report, tabled in Parliament on Monday, CAG said embassy officials are living outside on rent and six residential units of the embassy premises have been vacant as of Feb 2025. The remaining 10 are in an extremely dilapidated condition with “damaged wooden floor and walls, and blockage of sewage and drainage pipes”, it said.In Aug 2023, the embassy had forwarded a proposal to the external affairs ministry for “complete renovation” of 16 residential units at a cost of over Rs 17 crore, which, CAG said, is still under consideration (till Jan 2025). Meanwhile, the embassy has spent Rs 3 crore towards renting accommodation for its personnel.Despite having AMC and incurring significant expenditure on repairs, “due to multiple wear and tear issues, erosion and bursting of water and heating pipelines, water leakages, requirement of waterproofing of roof, damages to the wooden floor and walls, and blockage of sewage and drainage pipes”, these newly constructed residential units are becoming uninhabitable, CAG observed. The AMC of the new building had started in April 2017.Further, while the old chancery building was vacated in 2012, the embassy continued to pay heating charges of Rs 74 lakh for it to the Beijing Heating Company. NEW DELHI: Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has raised questions on the condition of the new Indian embassy building in Beijing – how it turned into an “uninhabitable” place, “extremely dilapidated, within a few years of renovation and despite incurring expenditure on a comprehensive annual maintenance contract (AMC).The embassy had shifted its offices and residential quarters for 16 senior officials to a new, renovated building premises in Jan 2012 from the old chancery premises that were vacated for redevelopment. Now, the embassy has proposed another expenditure of over Rs 17 crore to renovate the new premises.The “extremely dilapidated condition” of the new building came under the auditor’s scrutiny as the government had spent, besides incurring expenditure on renovation itself, on a five-year maintenance guarantee and a comprehensive AMC thereafter.In its audit report, tabled in Parliament on Monday, CAG said embassy officials are living outside on rent and six residential units of the embassy premises have been vacant as of Feb 2025. The remaining 10 are in an extremely dilapidated condition with “damaged wooden floor and walls, and blockage of sewage and drainage pipes”, it said.In Aug 2023, the embassy had forwarded a proposal to the external affairs ministry for “complete renovation” of 16 residential units at a cost of over Rs 17 crore, which, CAG said, is still under consideration (till Jan 2025). Meanwhile, the embassy has spent Rs 3 crore towards renting accommodation for its personnel.Despite having AMC and incurring significant expenditure on repairs, “due to multiple wear and tear issues, erosion and bursting of water and heating pipelines, water leakages, requirement of waterproofing of roof, damages to the wooden floor and walls, and blockage of sewage and drainage pipes”, these newly constructed residential units are becoming uninhabitable, CAG observed. The AMC of the new building had started in April 2017.Further, while the old chancery building was vacated in 2012, the embassy continued to pay heating charges of Rs 74 lakh for it to the Beijing Heating Company.
