Kanimozhi (PTI photo) DMK MP Kanimozhi on Thursday targeted the NDA during a campaign in Madurai, saying people in Tamil Nadu were not ready to vote for the BJP-led alliance and were instead backing the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA). Campaigning for DMK candidate Bhoominathan in the Madurai South constituency, she said voters would support those who could protect the future of Tamil people and their children.“People are not ready to vote for you (NDA). They are prepared to support the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and our alliance, which is capable of fulfilling the promises it has made under our Chief Minister. The people are ready to vote for those who will safeguard the future of Tamil people and Tamil children,” Kanimozhi said.She described the DMK-led alliance as policy-based and not driven by political convenience. Taking a swipe at AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami, she said his party had earlier ruled out any tie-up with the BJP but was now allied with it. “Our alliance is a policy-based alliance. It is not a shifting or opportunistic alliance. It is a people-centric coalition that will continue its journey with commitment and stability. Years ago, Edappadi Palaniswami had declared that he would never, under any circumstances, form an alliance with the BJP. But today, they are standing together on the same stage, hand in hand. They come to seek votes based on such contradictions,” she added.Kanimozhi also rejected the BJP’s claim that the DMK was “anti-Hindu”, pointing to temple work carried out by the state government. “The BJP claims that the DMK is against Hindus. However, the reality speaks otherwise. Under this government, more than 4,000 temples have undergone consecration ceremonies (Kumbabhishekam)… this stands as clear evidence,” she said.On welfare schemes, she said the government had delivered on its promise of monthly financial assistance for women. “In the last election, we promised to provide Rs 1,000 as a monthly assistance to women, and we fulfilled that promise… in the next term, if we return to power, this assistance will be increased to Rs 2,000,” she added.She also criticised the Centre over rising LPG prices and supply concerns, questioning the “Make in India” push. “Even after the war, many countries have continued to function without any shortage of gas cylinders. However, under Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Make in India’ claims, even LPG cylinders are not truly made in India but are largely imported from abroad. As a result, today there is uncertainty about how long gas supplies will last. Many lodges and restaurants are struggling; the price of gas has nearly doubled, putting them under severe financial pressure,” she said.Kanimozhi said the DMK was approaching voters with “pride and confidence”, asking for support based on its work over the past five years. CM Mamata Banerjee NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that he should resign first if voter lists contained names of infiltrators.Speaking at a rally in Dakshin Dinajpur, she said: “If voter list contained names of infiltrators, Modi also won with their votes earlier, so he should resign first.”She questioned the allegations around electoral rolls and asked why the same voter lists used in the 2024 general elections are now being challenged ahead of the assembly polls.The chief minister also addressed the recent incident in Malda district, where judicial officers were gheraoed for several hours. She blamed the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Indian Secular Front (ISF) for the incident, while accusing the Congress and the BJP of instigation.Providing details, Banerjee said the main accused in the case had been arrested.”The BJP loaned him (the accused) from the AIMIM and brought him here,” she alleged while addressing the rally at Harirampur.She further added: “ISF is with them; Congress and BJP have also provided instigation.”Banerjee said the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the main accused, advocate Mofakkarul Islam from Bagdogra airport while he was trying to flee.”It is they who engineered the violence in Malda’s Mothabari,” she said.Banerjee also raised concerns over the conduct of the elections, alleging that officials were transferred to facilitate the movement of outsiders into the state.She further claimed irregularities involving security forces.”Money is being brought in using CRPF vehicles. I have a record of these movements and will expose them at the appropriate time,” she alleged.The Trinamool Congress chief also targeted home minister Amit Shah, who has announced plans to stay in West Bengal during the election period.Banerjee claimed that his presence would not benefit the BJP electorally. NEW DELHI: A US-sanctioned tanker carrying Iranian crude oil has altered its course mid-voyage, dropping India as its destination and rerouting to China, in a move that underscores ongoing challenges in resuming oil trade with Iran.The Aframax tanker Ping Shun, which had been signalling Vadinar in Gujarat earlier this week, is now indicating Dongying in China as its destination, according to ship-tracking firm Kpler. The vessel was expected to deliver what would have been India’s first Iranian crude cargo since 2019.”An Iranian crude vessel ‘Ping Shun’ that had been en route to Vadinar, India, over the past three days has dropped India as its declared destination near arrival and is now signalling China,” said Sumit Ritolia, Lead Research Analyst at Kpler.The shift in destination appears to be linked to payment-related concerns, with sellers tightening financial terms amid ongoing sanctions complexities.According to Ritolia, the trade environment has moved away from earlier credit arrangements towards upfront or near-term payments, complicating transactions.”While such mid-voyage destination changes are not unprecedented with Iranian crudes, they highlight the increasing sensitivity of trade flows to financial terms and counterparty risk,” he said.He added, “If the payment issues are resolved, the cargo could still make its way to an Indian refinery. However, the episode underscores how commercial terms are becoming as critical as logistics in determining Iranian crude flows to other countries apart from China.”There is no confirmation that the vessel’s currently signalled destination is final, as AIS tracking data can change during transit.The cargo aboard Ping Shun, estimated at around 600,000 barrels, was loaded from Kharg Island in early March and had an expected arrival in Vadinar on April 4.If delivered, it would have marked India’s first import of Iranian crude in nearly seven years. Imports were halted in May 2019 after the United States tightened sanctions on Iran’s oil exports.India had previously been a major buyer of Iranian oil, with imports reaching about 518,000 barrels per day in 2018. This declined to 268,000 bpd in early 2019 during a temporary sanctions waiver period before stopping entirely.At its peak, Iranian crude accounted for around 11.5 per cent of India’s total oil imports, with refiners favouring Iran’s light and heavy grades due to compatibility and favourable terms.Despite a recent US waiver allowing limited purchases of Iranian oil at sea for 30 days, financial and banking constraints remain a major obstacle.Iran continues to be excluded from the SWIFT system, making international payments difficult. Earlier mechanisms, such as euro payments routed through intermediary banks, are no longer available.The temporary waiver, aimed at easing global oil prices amid ongoing conflict in the region, is set to expire on April 19.
