Representative images NEW DELHI: The cabinet Tuesday approved three multi-tracking railway projects, extension of Ahmedabad Metro and a new integrated airport terminal in Srinagar with a total investment of Rs 11,806 crore. The cabinet also approved an increase in MSP for raw jute.Announcing the decisions, I&B minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the railway projects — doubling of Gondia-Jabalpur track and laying of third and fourth lines on Punarakh-Kiul and Gamharia-Chandil corridors — will increase Indian Railways’ network by about 307 km and will enable the national transporter to introduce 38 more express and passenger trains.The total investment in these projects, passing through eight districts across Maharashtra, MP, Bihar and Jharkhand, will be around Rs 9,072 crore and these will be completed by 2030-31.Vaishnaw also announced development of the Civil Enclave at Srinagar airport at an estimated cost of Rs 1,677 crore. “People want to visit the Valley, and there is high demand for air traffic” he said.In an official release, govt said the cabinet approved extension of Ahmedabad Metro at a cost of around Rs 1,067 crore. Govt approves equity investment hike of PowerGrid

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs Tuesday approved a proposal to increase the equity investment threshold of public sector enterprise Powergrid from Rs 5,000 crore to Rs 7,500 crore per subsidiary, enabling it to bid for capital-intensive transmission projects. They carry the support of every brother & sister of TN who is tired of corruption, complacency, and the DMK’s betrayal,” Annamalai said.”I as a Karyakarta will stand shoulder to shoulder & campaign for all our winning BJP & other NDA candidates, with the aim of the NDA winning 210 seats in the upcoming assembly elections,” he added.Why Anamalai was pushed to the marginAlmost a year before the assembly elections, BJP had removed Annamalai as state president, a decision widely viewed as aimed at reviving ties with the AIADMK led by Edappadi K Palaniswami.Reportedly, Palaniswami had made a pre-condition ahead of the alliance talks — the ouster of Annamalai, given his ruthless attack on the AIADMK. Following this development, Union home minister Amit Shah had said that “Annamalai’s orgainsational skills will be leveraged within party’s national framework.”The alliance was finalised for the upcoming Assembly polls. AIADMK will contest 178 seats, BJP 27, and the faction of PMK led by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss will contest 18 seats.Amma Makkal Munnetra Katchi, led by TTV Dhinakaran, will contest 11 seats in the elections. This distribution reflects the seat-sharing agreement among the NDA allies in Tamil Nadu.Meanwhile, another setback for his followers came on February 3, 2026, when a peeved Annamalai stepped down as election in-charge for six assembly constituencies — Karaikudi, Singanallur, Srivaikuntam, Virugambakkam, Madurai (South), and Padmanabhapuram — citing his father’s ill health.The leader was, reportedly, upset over being restricted with only six out of the 234 assembly seats.Additionally, Annamalai’s name was also missing when the Tamil Nadu BJP on February 11 constituted a Legislative Assembly election management committee under its state chief Nainar Nagenthran.While Nagenthran was named as head of the committee, former Union minister and the party’s national executive member Pon Radhakrishnan was named as the coordinator.How caste played its roleCaste dynamics also seem to have played a role in the sidelining of Annamalai. Both him and EPS belong to Gounder community.Annamalai’s emergence as a potential chief minister was perceived by AIADMK as a direct challenge to EPS’s dominance within the alliance.Gounders fall under the Backward Classes category and account for roughly 5% to 7% of Tamil Nadu’s population. He further targeted the ruling DMK with corruption allegations, releasing what he called the “DMK Files.” The first part, published in April 2023, included charges against chief minister MK Stalin, his son and minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and other party leaders. Kanimozhi (PTI photo) DMK MP Kanimozhi on Thursday targeted the NDA during a campaign in Madurai, saying people in Tamil Nadu were not ready to vote for the BJP-led alliance and were instead backing the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA). Campaigning for DMK candidate Bhoominathan in the Madurai South constituency, she said voters would support those who could protect the future of Tamil people and their children.“People are not ready to vote for you (NDA). They are prepared to support the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and our alliance, which is capable of fulfilling the promises it has made under our Chief Minister. The people are ready to vote for those who will safeguard the future of Tamil people and Tamil children,” Kanimozhi said.She described the DMK-led alliance as policy-based and not driven by political convenience. Taking a swipe at AIADMK leader Edappadi Palaniswami, she said his party had earlier ruled out any tie-up with the BJP but was now allied with it. “Our alliance is a policy-based alliance. It is not a shifting or opportunistic alliance. It is a people-centric coalition that will continue its journey with commitment and stability. Years ago, Edappadi Palaniswami had declared that he would never, under any circumstances, form an alliance with the BJP. But today, they are standing together on the same stage, hand in hand. They come to seek votes based on such contradictions,” she added.Kanimozhi also rejected the BJP’s claim that the DMK was “anti-Hindu”, pointing to temple work carried out by the state government. “The BJP claims that the DMK is against Hindus. However, the reality speaks otherwise. Under this government, more than 4,000 temples have undergone consecration ceremonies (Kumbabhishekam)… this stands as clear evidence,” she said.On welfare schemes, she said the government had delivered on its promise of monthly financial assistance for women. “In the last election, we promised to provide Rs 1,000 as a monthly assistance to women, and we fulfilled that promise… in the next term, if we return to power, this assistance will be increased to Rs 2,000,” she added.She also criticised the Centre over rising LPG prices and supply concerns, questioning the “Make in India” push. “Even after the war, many countries have continued to function without any shortage of gas cylinders. However, under Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Make in India’ claims, even LPG cylinders are not truly made in India but are largely imported from abroad. As a result, today there is uncertainty about how long gas supplies will last. Many lodges and restaurants are struggling; the price of gas has nearly doubled, putting them under severe financial pressure,” she said.Kanimozhi said the DMK was approaching voters with “pride and confidence”, asking for support based on its work over the past five years.
