PATNA: The Bihar legislative assembly on Friday received a bomb threat through email, police said.Speaking to PTI, Sachiwalay-1 Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Anu Kumari said, “We received information that an email containing bomb threat was received by Bihar legislative assembly officials. It aims to ensure equality before law and promote national integration by replacing religion-based personal laws with a uniform legal framework.In the Bengal polls, where BJP strives to wrest power from three-time chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who fiercely opposes the UCC, the issue is expected to highly polarise the elections as the proposed legislation constitutes one of the Sangh’s key propositions that the ruling BJP has been rolling out in phases in the states it rules.Shah made these remarks while releasing the party’s manifesto, “Sankalp Patra”, earlier in the day for the West Bengal Assembly elections.Addressing a programme in Kolkata after unveiling the manifesto, Shah said several BJP-ruled states have already implemented the UCC to ensure that a single, uniform set of laws applies to all citizens.”Several BJP-ruled states have implemented the Uniform Civil Code. Within six months, we will implement the UCC in Bengal and ensure that a single, uniform set of laws applies to all citizens across the state,” he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.He further said the party would take steps to stop infiltration and cattle smuggling across the state’s borders.”We will not only seal Bengal’s borders against infiltrators but also ensure that not a single cow is smuggled out of India through Bengal,” Shah said.Speaking about the party’s election manifesto, Shah said the “Sankalp Patra” presents a roadmap to address concerns of various sections of society in the state and aims to bring them out of despair.”This manifesto is a path to bring every section of Bengal out of despair. It will show a new way out for farmers surrounded by various kinds of fears. NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Friday asked the Union government to respond to a habeas corpus petition seeking the safe return of 26 Indian nationals allegedly stuck in Russia and forced to fight in the war against Ukraine.A bench led by chief justice of India Surya Kant, along with justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi, issued notice to the Centre and asked it to reply within a week. We are fighting a war against Ukraine for a foreign state unwillingly.” Responding to this, Mehta told the court that the matter would be examined and sought time. The Bench noted this and said it had already asked the government earlier to look into the issue.The petition, filed by family members, said the 26 Indians had travelled to Russia on valid visas, some as tourists, some as students, after being promised jobs by recruitment agents. But after reaching there, their passports were taken away, their movement restricted, and they were threatened and pushed into joining military units linked to the Russian armed forces.Families said the last messages they received, mostly between September and October 2025, showed that the men were in or near active conflict zones such as Kupyansk, Selydove, Makiivka and Chelyabinsk. They had expressed fear and said they could not leave the areas where they were deployed. In many cases, contact has since been lost, and families did not know their current condition or whereabouts.The petition also said that despite repeated requests to authorities, including the ministry of external affairs, the Indian embassy in Moscow, the ministry of home affairs, and state governments, families have not received clear information or effective help. Invoking Article 32 of the Constitution, the petition argued that the government has a duty to protect Indian citizens even outside the country, especially when they cannot protect themselves.
