NEW DELHI: Opposition parties on Wednesday accused right-wing leaders of voting in more than one state, calling it “proof of vote theft.” The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Congress claimed that Rajya Sabha MP and RSS ideologue Rakesh Sinha had voted in both the Delhi and Bihar elections. Sharing screenshots of Sinha’s posts, which showed him voting in the Delhi Assembly elections on 5 February 2025 and again in the Bihar Assembly elections on Thursday, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj wrote on X: “Rakesh Sinha voted in the Delhi Assembly elections and again in the Bihar elections today. He teaches at Delhi University’s Motilal Nehru College, so how can he claim an address in Bihar? Do you think the BJP will reform if caught stealing? Not at all; they will continue to do it openly. Even today, fake monitoring continues at the AQI stations.”The opposition also alleged that BJP Delhi Purvanchal Morcha president Santosh Ojha and party worker Nagendra Kumar were among those who voted in both Delhi and Bihar. Rakesh Sinha dismissed the allegations, saying he had shifted his voter registration from Delhi to his village in Bihar, and warned that he would file a defamation suit against the accusations.Sinha wrote on X: “I never imagined politics could fall to such a low level. Those questioning the faith of people who respect the constitution should think a hundred times before speaking. Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma NEW DELHI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday accused the Congress of doing “disgusting politics” by including the issue of singer Zubeen Garg’s death in its election manifesto, saying the party had “committed an unpardonable crime” by invoking the late singer’s name for votes.Speaking on the sidelines of the BJP manifesto release programme here, Sarma said Zubeen Garg was deeply loved by the people of Assam and it was “unfortunate and sad” to use his name in an election campaign.“The Congress has committed an unpardonable crime by including Zubeen’s name and his death in its election manifesto. If the Congress wants to pay real tribute to Zubeen, they can hire a lawyer… they can bring Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who can argue the case free of cost in the fast-track court,” he said.The remarks came after the Congress, in its manifesto released by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, promised justice for the singer within 100 days of coming to power.Sarma said the issue was already being heard in court and claimed the Congress was unaware that a fast-track court had been constituted and daily hearings had already begun.“Nobody has done this kind of disgusting politics of bringing in Zubeen’s name to seek votes… People will give the party stern punishment at the hustings,” he added.The chief minister said the government could not dictate the outcome of the case and could only facilitate the legal process by setting up the court and appointing prosecution lawyers.“I want justice delivered in under three months, preferably within a month. I believe the way the proceedings are taking place, it will not take even 100 days to deliver justice, and I hope we will get good news within a month,” he said.The Gauhati High Court had appointed an exclusive fast-track sessions court on March 16, and the state government later provided logistical support for its functioning.Zubeen Garg, 52, died while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19 last year, where he had gone to attend the fourth North East India Festival (NEIF).Following his death, the Assam government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the CID wing of Assam Police to probe the case. The SIT later filed a chargesheet before a local court in Guwahati, naming seven accused, all of whom have been arrested and are currently in judicial custody.Sarma also attacked the Congress leadership, alleging that Kharge had insulted both Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg, while also referring to remarks allegedly made by Kharge’s son.“Kharge’s son had insulted the youth of Assam, saying there was no talented person in the state to work in the semiconductor industry… Will people believe that they can give justice to Zubeen Garg?” Sarma said.The chief minister further alleged that a video circulating on social media showed people from a consultancy firm hired by the Congress discussing how the issue of Zubeen Garg’s death should be raised at different levels to secure votes.“If I become the chief minister again, I will ensure that all members of this firm are arrested for indulging in this kind of dirty politics and conspiracy. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India had handled the fallout of the West Asia crisis “effectively”, while accusing the Opposition of attempting to “spread anarchy” by fuelling panic over fuel shortages and rising prices.Addressing a rally in Vav-Tharad in Gujarat, Modi said global disruptions caused by tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran had affected energy supplies worldwide, particularly diesel, petrol and gas. He said India, however, had managed to keep the situation under control due to “strong foreign policy and national unity”.“The situation unfolding in West Asia is impacting the entire world,” he said, adding that despite rising global difficulties, India had avoided major disruption. “But at a time when the country needs unity, Congress leaders are spreading rumours and fear, trying to incite people to queue at fuel pumps,” he said, accusing the party of seeking political gains from the crisis.Modi also said India was capable of handling any crisis and would emerge as a global leader in renewable energy, pointing to ongoing investments in transmission and infrastructure.The Prime Minister’s remarks came as he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 20,000 crore across Gujarat, spanning sectors such as power, railways, road transport, health, urban development and rural infrastructure. Among the key projects was the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, built at a cost of over Rs 5,100 crore, along with multiple rail upgrades and urban initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and public services.He also referred to the strategic importance of Deesa, saying a long-pending airbase project had been stalled for years under previous governments. “Files were buried, but once you gave me responsibility, we revived the project. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India had handled the fallout of the West Asia crisis “effectively”, while accusing the Opposition of attempting to “spread anarchy” by fuelling panic over fuel shortages and rising prices.Addressing a rally in Vav-Tharad in Gujarat, Modi said global disruptions caused by tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran had affected energy supplies worldwide, particularly diesel, petrol and gas. He said India, however, had managed to keep the situation under control due to “strong foreign policy and national unity”.“The situation unfolding in West Asia is impacting the entire world,” he said, adding that despite rising global difficulties, India had avoided major disruption. “But at a time when the country needs unity, Congress leaders are spreading rumours and fear, trying to incite people to queue at fuel pumps,” he said, accusing the party of seeking political gains from the crisis.Modi also said India was capable of handling any crisis and would emerge as a global leader in renewable energy, pointing to ongoing investments in transmission and infrastructure.The Prime Minister’s remarks came as he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 20,000 crore across Gujarat, spanning sectors such as power, railways, road transport, health, urban development and rural infrastructure. Among the key projects was the Ahmedabad-Dholera Expressway, built at a cost of over Rs 5,100 crore, along with multiple rail upgrades and urban initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and public services.He also referred to the strategic importance of Deesa, saying a long-pending airbase project had been stalled for years under previous governments. “Files were buried, but once you gave me responsibility, we revived the project. NEW DELHI: Actor-politician Vijay and members of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), have been booked for alleged violations of the model code of conduct (MCC) during a campaign event ahead of the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, police sources told PTI on Tuesday. According to sources, the Peravallur police registered cases under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 126(2) related to obstruction of public proceedings, Section 189(2), and other relevant clauses. The action follows complaints of violations during Vijay’s campaign in the city. Police said party cadres had gathered at the venue before the time permitted by authorities, leading to inconvenience for the public. Officials also flagged the use of nearly 30 sound systems during a roadshow, alleging that it caused disturbance and disrupted traffic movement in the area. Vijay’s TVK is making its electoral debut in the 2026 Assembly elections. He launched his campaign from Perambur, one of the two constituencies he is contesting, along with Tiruchirappalli East.
