NEW DELHI: The Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps has launched Sikkim’s first border village community radio station to improve connectivity in remote areas.‘88.4 FM Radio Sikkim Sundari’ aims to boost communication and information access in remote high-altitude border areas. Dedicated to the citizens of India in Sikkim, the station addresses challenges of geographic isolation, harsh weather and limited mobile and internet connectivity. It aims to bridge the information gap by providing reliable and timely communication, a release said.It will provide a platform for local culture and youth participation, and also give an opportunity to local youth to develop communication skills and contribute to community engagement, an officer said. The radio station was inaugurated in the presence of senior officers of Trishakti Corps, representatives of the civil administration, and members of the local community.“The initiative will help connect communities, amplify local voices, and support development in remote areas,” a senior Army officer said.While primarily a community radio station for border areas, the station is also accessible via the Radio Sikkim Sundari 88.4 FM app on Google Play Store.The Army has been actively expanding its community radio network across several strategic border regions. NEW DELHI: Student activist Umar Khalid has moved the Supreme Court seeking a review of a verdict that denied him bail while observing that there were reasonable grounds to believe the allegations levelled against him in connection with the conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots.A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria was requested by senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who appeared in the court for Khalid, to list the review petition in open court.Sibal said the matter is coming up for consideration before the judges in chambers on April 16 and they have filed an application for an open-court hearing.Justice Kumar said, “We will look into the papers. If required, we will call it.” According to the Supreme Court’s rules, review petitions are considered by judges who delivered a judgment or passed an order in chambers to remedy an apparent error or a resultant grave injustice that has been the consequence of a decision of the apex court. Parties seeking a review can request judges for an open-court hearing to rectify the grave injustice caused due to the decision under review.On January 5, Besides Khalid, the top court had refused bail to Sharjeel Imam but granted it to five others, saying all the accused do not stand on the same footing.Khalid and Imam, who have been incarcerated since 2020, can file fresh bail pleas after the examination of protected witnesses or after a year from the day the order was passed, the court had said, as it rejected their contention of a delay in the trial.There was a prima-facie case against Khalid and Imam under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the top court had said, noting that prosecution material suggests that they were involved in the “planning, mobilisation and strategic direction” of the riots.While the two will remain in jail, activists Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohammad Saleem Khan and Shadab Ahmad were given bail by the court, which had imposed 11 conditions and said any misuse of liberty would lead to cancellation of bail.The court had noted that the guarantee of liberty enshrined under Article 21 of the Constitution is of foundational importance, but at the same time, the security of a community, the integrity of a trial process and the preservation of public order are equally legitimate constitutional concerns.Khalid and Imam stand on qualitatively-different footing as compared to the other accused, the court had said.The prosecution had prima facie disclosed “a central and formative role” and “involvement in the level of planning, mobilisation and strategic direction extending beyond episodic and localised acts”, the bench had said.The February 2020 riots in northeast Delhi broke out during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), leaving 53 people dead and more than 700 injured.The Delhi Police had arrested a total of 18 people in the conspiracy case. Of them, 11 have got bail so far.The apex court’s January order had said a delay in the trial does not operate as a “trump card” that automatically displaces statutory safeguards.”All the appellants do not stand on equal footing as regards culpability. The hierarchy of participation emerging from the prosecution’s case requires the court to examine each application individually,” it had said, adding that the roles attributed to them were different.”This court is satisfied that the prosecution material disclosed a prima-facie allegation against the appellants, Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam…. AIADMK-BJP alliance will make Tamil Nadu ‘retrogressive’, warns Udhayanidhi Stalin NEW DELHI: Tamil Nadu deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday launched a sharp attack on the opposition AIADMK-led NDA, as reported by PTI. He warned voters that voting them to power would make the state “retrogressive” and urged voters to choose the DMK combine to sustain the pace of growth.Addressing a poll campaign in Villupuram in support of party candidates Lakshmanan (Villupuram) and Gowtham Dravidamani (Vanur), the DMK youth wing secretary appealed to the people to “annihilate” the AIADMK and BJP in the upcoming assembly elections. File photo NEW DELHI: BJP leaders in Bihar said on Monday that the identity of the party’s first chief minister in the state will be known on Tuesday, as Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is expected to arrive in Patna to oversee the transition of power.Chouhan, appointed by the BJP high command as the central observer for the election of the new legislature party leader, will visit Bihar on a day when JD(U) president Nitish Kumar is expected to step down as chief minister.Kumar, Bihar’s longest-serving chief minister, turned 75 last month and was sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP a week ago. He is expected to submit his resignation at Raj Bhavan immediately after his final cabinet meeting at 11 am, where he is likely to formally announce his decision to relinquish office.”Shivraj Singh Chouhan ji will be coming to Patna tomorrow and BJP legislators will be electing their leader in his presence,” the party’s Bihar unit president Sanjay Saraogi told news agency PTI.The leadership change will mark a milestone for the BJP, which is set to get its first chief minister in Bihar, the only Hindi heartland state where the top post has so far eluded the party. Even so, party leaders have remained cautious in their public remarks.Dilip Jaiswal, a minister and former Bihar BJP president, said, “It is an emotional moment for us. We hope that Nitish Kumar will continue to offer his guidance to the new government.”In the 243-member Bihar Assembly, the NDA commands a strong majority with 202 seats. The BJP holds 89 seats, followed closely by JD(U) with 85, while allies LJP(RV), HAM and RLM make up the rest.Jaiswal declined to speculate on who would be chosen as leader, saying, “It is the collective prerogative of the legislature party. I should not hazard any guess. Let Shivraj Singh Chouhan come tomorrow. All will be clear.”Neither Saraogi nor Jaiswal commented on the swearing-in ceremony, though speculation is growing that it may take place on April 14, with reports suggesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi could attend.Among the frontrunners, deputy chief minister Samrat Choudhary is widely seen as a leading contender. Choudhary, who also holds the crucial Home portfolio, had earlier been described by Union home minister Amit Shah as destined to become “a big man.”However, critics within the party point out that Choudhary is not a lifelong Sangh Parivar member, having spent nearly two decades in rival parties including the RJD and JD(U). They also note that he was already appointed legislature party leader in November, suggesting that a fresh election may indicate the BJP is considering alternative names.Another strong contender is Nityanand Rai, Union Minister of State for Home, who began his political career as an ABVP activist during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and later served as Bihar BJP president before joining the Union cabinet in 2019.Party insiders told PTI the new chief minister is likely to be from an OBC or Dalit community, as the BJP is confident of retaining its upper-caste base but wants to broaden support among other social groups in Bihar’s caste-sensitive political landscape shaped by Mandal-era politics.Meanwhile, attention has also turned to Nishant, the only son of Nitish Kumar, who joined the JD(U) only last month.Some JD(U) leaders have suggested that the 44-year-old, who is not yet a member of the state legislature, could be inducted into the new cabinet as deputy chief minister.
