NEW DELHI: The Delhi government will revamp 400 km of road stretches by the end of the year, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday. According to officials, more than 241 major roads have been identified for redevelopment under the government’s comprehensive road improvement project, at the total cost of Rs 802 crore. “The initiative is a significant step towards making the capital safer, more organised and future-ready. All roads will be developed under the wall-to-wall carpeting model to ensure construction work is not partial, but carried out across the full width with uniform quality,” Gupta said. Each road will undergo technical assessment of the base layer, necessary strengthening and proper drainage arrangements with prescribed standards. This will help reduce waterlogging during the monsoon season and ensure long-term road safety, she added. The chief minister said unlike the common practice of only repairing the central portion of roads or isolated potholes, which result in deterioration after a short period, under the new system, entire stretches will be uniformly strengthened from edge to edge, enhancing durability and lifespan. “The project is targeted for completion by the end of the year. Work will be undertaken in phases to minimise traffic disruption and public inconvenience. A fully levelled and sealed surface across the complete width will also lead to reduction in dust and air pollution as damaged roads generate loose soil and fine particles that become airborne due to vehicular movement,” Gupta said. Major chokepoints The ongoing tensions have done exactly that, forcing India to confront a reality it has long managed but rarely foregrounded.Its growth, its energy security and its strategic autonomy are all tied to sea lanes that run through some of the most volatile regions on the Earth.A narrow strait that powers a giant economyThe Strait of Hormuz is not just another maritime passage. It is the artery through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil flows, and for India, its importance is even more acute. Around 80 per cent of India’s energy imports pass through this corridor, making it a single point of failure for a country that is among the world’s largest energy consumers. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched a broadside against West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that the TMC government is hell-bent on carrying out the “funeral procession” of law and order in the state.Addressing a rally in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar, the Prime Minister said that huge number of people here in Cooch Behar has made it clear that the “Trinamool Congress’s time is up”.”No matter how much the TMC goons intimidate you on polling day, you must have trust in the law. In this election, fear will be driven out of Bengal. Confidence will awaken through the BJP’s grand victory. I assure you, after this election, a full accounting of their (TMC’s) sins will be done. It will be settled one by one. After May 4, the law will take its course, no matter how big a goon it may be, this time justice will be served,” PM Modi said.”On one hand, there is fear of TMC, and on the other hand, you have the trust of BJP. On one hand, there is fear of TMC’s cut money and corruption and on the other hand the trust of BJP which can accelerate development. Efforts are now being made to ensure that sisters across the country, including West Bengal, benefit from this starting from the Lok Sabha elections in 2029,” he said.”Therefore, the government has scheduled a special session of Parliament on April 16, 17, and 18. This right of our mothers and sisters has been pending for 40 years. Any further delay is not right. From Cooch Behar, I once again assure all states of the country that those states that have done good work in population control will not face any loss in terms of seats. Everyone will benefit. The participation of all states and everyone’s rights will remain protected. NEW DELHI: A fresh political row erupted in Assam after Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife holds multiple foreign passports, prompting a sharp rebuttal and legal threat from the BJP leader.The controversy began with Khera’s press conference in Delhi, where he claimed to possess documents suggesting that Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, held three passports. “We have documents showing that Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, holds three passports. The first is a UAE Golden Card, the second an Antigua and Barbuda passport, and the third an Egyptian passport. Two of these belong to Islamic countries, yet they continue to claim religious adherence publicly,” he said.Khera escalated the attack by linking the issue to broader allegations. “You are seeing photos of Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife. Their names have been linked to several allegations such as land grabbing, misuse of temple funds, government subsidies, and chit fund scams. But today, the documents we are presenting are directly related to matters outside India,” he said. Calling it a “shocking detail”, he added that she had “not one, not two, but three passports, which have not expired”.’Khera will face consequences of his actions’: HimantaSarma dismissed the claims as politically motivated and said that both he and his wife will file a defamation case against Khera within 48 hours. “Today’s press conference by Pawan Khera reflects the deep frustration and panic within the Congress party. As Assam moves decisively towards a historic mandate, such desperate and baseless attacks only expose their sinking ground,” he wrote on X.“I categorically reject every allegation made by him. These are malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies aimed at misleading the people of Assam,” he added, announcing legal action. “My wife and I will be filing both criminal and civil defamation cases within the next 48 hours against Shri Pawan Khera. He will be held fully accountable for his reckless and defamatory statements.””I have complete faith in the judiciary. Holding multiple passports and failure to disclose properties is a grave and criminal offence. How much money have they sent from Assam to their bank accounts abroad? More investigation is required,” he wrote, calling the chief minister an “embarrassment” who “will have to answer the questions and pay for his crime.”Sarma responded again, flagging technical inconsistencies across the alleged documents. In a detailed post, he listed what he called “serious discrepancies” that pointed to fabrication. These included a “surname mismatch — ‘SARMA’ used instead of the official ‘SHARMA’”, and a photograph that “appears to be a publicly available image, not a standard biometric capture”.Referring to an Antigua and Barbuda passport, he pointed to an “expiry date mismatch between printed field and MRZ”, while an Egyptian passport allegedly showed “passport number mismatch… spelling errors (‘Egyptiann’) and incorrect Arabic reference”.“These inconsistencies strongly indicate possible fabrication or digital manipulation.
