NEW DELHI: A US-sanctioned tanker carrying Iranian crude oil has altered its course mid-voyage, dropping India as its destination and rerouting to China, in a move that underscores ongoing challenges in resuming oil trade with Iran.The Aframax tanker Ping Shun, which had been signalling Vadinar in Gujarat earlier this week, is now indicating Dongying in China as its destination, according to ship-tracking firm Kpler. The vessel was expected to deliver what would have been India’s first Iranian crude cargo since 2019.”An Iranian crude vessel ‘Ping Shun’ that had been en route to Vadinar, India, over the past three days has dropped India as its declared destination near arrival and is now signalling China,” said Sumit Ritolia, Lead Research Analyst at Kpler.The shift in destination appears to be linked to payment-related concerns, with sellers tightening financial terms amid ongoing sanctions complexities.According to Ritolia, the trade environment has moved away from earlier credit arrangements towards upfront or near-term payments, complicating transactions.”While such mid-voyage destination changes are not unprecedented with Iranian crudes, they highlight the increasing sensitivity of trade flows to financial terms and counterparty risk,” he said.He added, “If the payment issues are resolved, the cargo could still make its way to an Indian refinery. However, the episode underscores how commercial terms are becoming as critical as logistics in determining Iranian crude flows to other countries apart from China.”There is no confirmation that the vessel’s currently signalled destination is final, as AIS tracking data can change during transit.The cargo aboard Ping Shun, estimated at around 600,000 barrels, was loaded from Kharg Island in early March and had an expected arrival in Vadinar on April 4.If delivered, it would have marked India’s first import of Iranian crude in nearly seven years. Imports were halted in May 2019 after the United States tightened sanctions on Iran’s oil exports.India had previously been a major buyer of Iranian oil, with imports reaching about 518,000 barrels per day in 2018. This declined to 268,000 bpd in early 2019 during a temporary sanctions waiver period before stopping entirely.At its peak, Iranian crude accounted for around 11.5 per cent of India’s total oil imports, with refiners favouring Iran’s light and heavy grades due to compatibility and favourable terms.Despite a recent US waiver allowing limited purchases of Iranian oil at sea for 30 days, financial and banking constraints remain a major obstacle.Iran continues to be excluded from the SWIFT system, making international payments difficult. Earlier mechanisms, such as euro payments routed through intermediary banks, are no longer available.The temporary waiver, aimed at easing global oil prices amid ongoing conflict in the region, is set to expire on April 19. NEW DELHI: The Indian National Congress is set to finalise its candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections at a Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting in Delhi, with 85 per cent of names already decided, according to state unit chief K Selvaperunthagai.Selvaperunthagai said discussions involving senior leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, have largely concluded, with only a small portion of seats left to be finalised.”All India Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders discussed the candidates. 85% have been decided, 15% are pending. Today we are going to decide,” he said.The Congress will contest 28 constituencies as part of the alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which heads the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA).The DMK has retained the lion’s share, deciding to contest 164 of the 234 seats, while allocating the remaining 70 seats to its partners. Apart from Congress, key allies include the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) with five seats each, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) with eight seats, and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) with four seats.Other alliance partners include the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) with 10 seats and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) with two seats, along with smaller regional players.Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK president M K Stalin has already unveiled candidates for several key constituencies.Stalin will contest from Kolathur, while Deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin has been fielded from Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni.Other prominent candidates include Mahesh from Kanyakumari, Appavu from Radhapuram, Vahab from Palayamkottai, Kalaikathiravan from Tenkasi, and KKSSR Ramachandran from Aruppukottai. Additional names include Velu from Mylapore and Ma Subramanian from Saidapet.The main contest in the state is expected between the DMK-led SPA and the NDA led by the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which includes the BJP and PMK.A recent survey by polling agency Lok Poll projected a strong performance for the DMK alliance, estimating 181 to 189 seats with a vote share of 40.1 per cent. NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday launched a sharp attack on its Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha after he broke his silence over his removal as the party’s deputy leader in the Upper House, accusing him of hesitating to take on the BJP and raising “soft” issues instead of confronting the government.AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj, in a video message, directly criticised Chadha’s recent stance and conduct, saying, “Raghav bhai, I just watched your video. All of us are soldiers of Arvind Kejriwal ji, and we have learned only one thing: the one who gets scared is as good as finished. We were meant to raise people’s issues by looking the government in the eye.”He further accused Chadha of avoiding confrontation with the Centre and remaining silent on key issues, adding that those questioning the government are being suppressed. “In the past few days, we have seen that whoever raises serious issues against the government, questions it, or speaks for the people, is being treated like in a dictatorship. They are being banned across social media, whether it is Twitter, Facebook or YouTube. FIRs are being filed and cases are being registered.”Bharadwaj also questioned Chadha’s role in Parliament and his absence on major political issues. “Whenever there is an issue and the opposition walks out, you do not join the walkout. For the past several years, I have not seen you raise any issue in Parliament where you questioned the Prime Minister or the BJP government. How can politics of fear work like this?”He added that Chadha had not spoken on issues related to Punjab, despite being elected from the state, and criticised his absence during key moments when party leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, were facing legal troubles. “When many of our leaders were in jail and Arvind Kejriwal ji, as chief minister, was arrested in a false case, you were not even in the country at that time.”AAP’s media in-charge Anurag Dhanda echoed similar sentiments in a post on X, stating: “We are Kejriwal’s soldiers. Fearlessness is our first mark of identity. If someone fears Modi, will they fight for the country?” He added, “For the past few years, you’ve grown afraid, Raghav. You hesitate to speak against Modi. You hesitate to speak on the country’s real issues.”The sharp response from the party came hours after Chadha publicly reacted to his removal and said he had been sidelined. “Silenced, not defeated. My message to the ‘aam aadmi’: Khamosh Karwaya Gaya Hun, Hara Nahi Hun. ‘Aam Aadmi Ko Mera Sandesh,” he wrote on X.In a video message, Chadha questioned the party’s decision and said he had consistently raised issues concerning ordinary citizens in Parliament. “Whenever I get a chance to speak in Parliament, I raise issues related to the people. I bring up topics that are generally not discussed. Is speaking on public issues a crime? Have I committed any mistake or done anything wrong?” he asked.He further alleged that the party had written to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to prevent him from speaking. “AAP has said that Raghav Chadha should not be given an opportunity to speak. Why should anyone stop me from speaking in Parliament?” he said.Listing issues he has raised, Chadha said he had spoken about concerns such as delivery workers’ conditions, high food prices at airports, food adulteration, toll charges, taxation on the middle class and telecom recharge practices. “I have raised these issues, and the common people have benefited from them. What loss does AAP suffer because of this? Why should anyone stop me from speaking?” he added.Thanking the public for their support, he said, “You have given me immense love. I thank you for supporting and encouraging me. Keep supporting me – I am from you, and I am for you.”He concluded with a remark, “Do not mistake my silence for defeat.
