NEW DELHI: All opinion polls on Tuesday predicted a loss by a huge margin for the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan in Bihar Assembly Elections 2025. The alliance appeared to fall short, securing only 70 to 100 seats, according to the pollsters. NEW DELHI: The NDA government’s muscular approach in rooting out Naxalism, brought forth by encounter killings of its armed cadre and top commanders in large numbers, has been a constant fodder for admirers of this hardline policy as well as for its critics. But what has been less talked about is a parallel focus on intensifying basic initiatives like building schools and health centres and boosting infrastructure in the vast region, which was deprived of even basic civic necessities as the writ of the state was overshadowed by the tight grip of left-wing extremism.Union home minister Amit Shah, who has spearheaded the anti-Naxal strategy, was at pains during his speech in Lok Sabha on Monday to debunk the popular narrative that lack of development was a key factor behind the surge of Maoists. It was, in fact, their rise that ensured that the expansion of development initiatives skipped the red corridor, he argued.So focus on development initiatives in the largely tribal regions, the nucleus of Maoists, made for a parallel track in the government’s anti-Naxal drive along with intensifying security crackdown.It cleared projects of nearly 18,000 km of roads in affected areas — as insurgents often used improvised explosive devices (IEDS) in unpaved roads — while ensuring facilitation of movement for security forces as well as villagers. Over 12,000 km of roads have been constructed, Shah noted. Over 5,000 mobile towers were also installed, linking many unconnected and remote areas with modern communication, allowing locals to get linked to the wider world more easily than ever.Bank branches, ATMs kiosks and post offices were set up in thousands, over 250 Eklavya tribal schools were opened and regular health camps were organised in distant places, besides opening of hospitals in several places, giving the tribal population a taste of govt’s welfare outreach at a scale never seen earlier, and this helped loosen the hold of Naxals over tribals as they used to be often the only, if even limited, source of help for them.The Modi govt’s development initiative for aspirational districts, a programme for areas falling behind on socio-economic metrics, also came in handy.Maoists, who used to blow up schools or water tankers earlier, were left to fight a battle for their survival as security forces, in coordination with police in various states, piled pressure on them while locals benefited from developments.Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai had said at an interaction that dreaded Maoist Hidma’s mother too was treated at a govt hospital.Shah said in his speech that Naxalism did not spread because of poverty, but it was rather the other way round, blaming Leftist ideology for its rise and noting that communists were inspired by “foreign” ideas. . =KOLKATA/NEW DELHI: Olympic bronze medallist and multiple Grand Slam doubles champion Leander Paes crossed over to the BJP on Tuesday, exiting the Trinamool Congress after a brief stint.At BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Paes, 52, framed the move as a new “responsibility” after four decades in sport. “I have played for the country… I wish to serve youth and countrymen now,” he said, thanking PM Narendra Modi for the opportunity. Party functionaries pitched the tennis legend’s entry as a signal to urban voters and younger demographics, pushing back against criticism that the BJP focuses narrowly on Hindu causes.Junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar called Paes “a son of Bengal”, citing his upbringing in Kolkata and lineage tracing back to 19th-century poet and playwright Michael Madhusudan Dutt. Party functionaries expect his profile — Christian, Goan roots, Kolkata upbringing — to widen outreach among non-Hindu communities and the urban middle class.Paes had met BJP national president Nitin Nabin in Kolkata last week, fuelling speculation. Party functionaries pitched the tennis legend’s entry as a signal to urban voters and younger demographics, pushing back against criticism that the BJP focuses narrowly on Hindu causes.Junior Union minister Sukanta Majumdar called Paes “a son of Bengal”, citing his upbringing in Kolkata and lineage tracing back to 19th-century poet and playwright Michael Madhusudan Dutt. SRINAGAR: The withdrawal of security of several legislators and politicians rocked the J&K Assembly on Tuesday after the governing National Conference (NC) raised the issue and flayed the LG administration for the removal of security at its headquarters in Srinagar, Nawai Subha, even after a recent attack on party president Farooq Abdullah, saying the move risked the lives of its leader and MLAs.Police and security in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir fall under lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha.Echoing concerns raised by NC members, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said the national flag would not be safe in Kashmir if those holding it were unsafe. “Security issues shouldn’t be taken casually in J&K,” Rather said, adding that the administration should either declare J&K a risk-free place for politicians and political parties, or ensure proper security.“Recently, Dr Farooq Abdullah had a narrow escape, and after that, you withdrew security from the NC office, where he goes regularly, which is unfortunate,” the Speaker said. “It is a question of those who raise the Tricolour; they should remain safe.”Congress, too, claimed that the security of its J&K unit chief, Tariq Hameed Karra, had been withdrawn and that police had informed him that they did not have petrol for the escort vehicles and security guards.Earlier, the issue was flagged by NC legislators, with Hasnain Masoodi saying that instead of increasing security at the NC office after the attack on Abdullah, it had been withdrawn, and Nazir Gurezi asserting that the LG administration would be responsible if there was any untoward development. Javed Baig alleged that NC was being particularly targeted, and questioned why security at BJP and RSS offices had not been withdrawn.Salman Sagar, NC MLA from Hazratbal, said security of three Srinagar MLAs had been withdrawn despite being “on the hitlist” of terrorists. “The SHO in my area is telling me not to visit my constituency after 4 pm, and this is happening in Srinagar,” he said.Nizamuddin Bhat, Congress legislator from Bandipora, said security was a common concern for all parties in J&K and should not be treated as a largesse by the administration. He said Karra had told the SSP concerned that he was willing to provide petrol himself, but the security was still removed.
