NEW DELHI: A foreign vessel carrying Iranian oil is likely to reach India on April 4, marking the first such shipment since May 2019, when India stopped imports from the country in the wake of US sanctions.MarineTraffic data showed that the Eswatini-flagged tanker, Ping Shun, was heading to the Vadinar facility of Deendayal Port at Kandla. A govt official said the port had not received any intimation about its arrival till late on Tuesday.According to Sumit Ritolia, lead analyst at global analytics firm Kpler, Ping Shun is en route to Vadinar with nearly 6 lakh barrels of crude.Officials said 18 Indian vessels are in the Persian Gulf, four in the Gulf of Oman and two in the Gulf of Aden. NEW DELHI: The Centre has moved to extend its digital media rules to news and current affairs content shared by non-publisher users on social media platforms, proposing changes that expand the reach of Part III of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, beyond registered publishers.In draft amendments issued on March 30, the ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY) has invited stakeholder comments till April 14, signalling a move to strengthen compliance requirements for intermediaries and expand oversight of online content.A key proposal seeks to make it clear that Part III of the Rules — applicable to digital news publishers — will also apply to “news and current affairs content” shared on social media by users who are not registered publishers.While the draft itself focuses on clarifying applicability and strengthening oversight mechanisms, officials indicated the framework could enable action on such content through the existing grievance redress process overseen by the Inter-Departmental Committee, though the draft does not spell out specific actions.It also proposes changes under Part II, including the insertion of a new Rule 3(4), which requires intermediaries to follow government-issued advisories, directives and guidelines as part of their legal responsibilities under Section 79 of the IT Act. NEW DELHI: IndiGo on Tuesday named DG of International Air Transport Association (IATA) and former British Airways (BA) chief William Walsh as its new CEO.Airline promoter and MD Rahul Bhatia had assumed charge as CEO in the interim after Pieter Elbers’ resignation last month with immediate effect. Elbers, then KLM president and CEO of KLM, was brought to IndiGo about four years ago to expand its international footprint. While the foreign footprint expanded substantially following the Dec schedule collapse, Elbers put in his papers. Bhatia had said the schedule collapse “should never have taken place”.Now, IndiGo has chosen an industry veteran who can help it expand globally. Walsh, who will take charge in Aug, is a trained pilot who has been the CEO of Aer Lingus, British Airways, and then of International Airlines Group, which is a holding company that owns these two airlines along with Iberia, Level and Vueling. He began his career in aviation as a cadet pilot with Aer Lingus in 1979.William Walsh expected to join IndiGo by August 3Choosing a pilot-turned-management heavyweight with CEO experience shows that his focus will be equally on operations and expansion to ensure what happened last Dec never recurs. NEW DELHI: The NDA government’s muscular approach in rooting out Naxalism, brought forth by encounter killings of its armed cadre and top commanders in large numbers, has been a constant fodder for admirers of this hardline policy as well as for its critics. But what has been less talked about is a parallel focus on intensifying basic initiatives like building schools and health centres and boosting infrastructure in the vast region, which was deprived of even basic civic necessities as the writ of the state was overshadowed by the tight grip of left-wing extremism.Union home minister Amit Shah, who has spearheaded the anti-Naxal strategy, was at pains during his speech in Lok Sabha on Monday to debunk the popular narrative that lack of development was a key factor behind the surge of Maoists. It was, in fact, their rise that ensured that the expansion of development initiatives skipped the red corridor, he argued.So focus on development initiatives in the largely tribal regions, the nucleus of Maoists, made for a parallel track in the government’s anti-Naxal drive along with intensifying security crackdown.It cleared projects of nearly 18,000 km of roads in affected areas — as insurgents often used improvised explosive devices (IEDS) in unpaved roads — while ensuring facilitation of movement for security forces as well as villagers. Over 12,000 km of roads have been constructed, Shah noted. Over 5,000 mobile towers were also installed, linking many unconnected and remote areas with modern communication, allowing locals to get linked to the wider world more easily than ever.Bank branches, ATMs kiosks and post offices were set up in thousands, over 250 Eklavya tribal schools were opened and regular health camps were organised in distant places, besides opening of hospitals in several places, giving the tribal population a taste of govt’s welfare outreach at a scale never seen earlier, and this helped loosen the hold of Naxals over tribals as they used to be often the only, if even limited, source of help for them.The Modi govt’s development initiative for aspirational districts, a programme for areas falling behind on socio-economic metrics, also came in handy.Maoists, who used to blow up schools or water tankers earlier, were left to fight a battle for their survival as security forces, in coordination with police in various states, piled pressure on them while locals benefited from developments.Chhattisgarh chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai had said at an interaction that dreaded Maoist Hidma’s mother too was treated at a govt hospital.Shah said in his speech that Naxalism did not spread because of poverty, but it was rather the other way round, blaming Leftist ideology for its rise and noting that communists were inspired by “foreign” ideas.
