Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, along with other former accused, on Sunday moved a recusal application before Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma in Delhi high court in the alleged liquor scam.According to Aam Aadmi Party, Kejriwal will appear and argue his person on Monday.This comes days after the high court gave final opportunity to Kejriwal and others to file their stand on a plea by the Enforcement Directorate to expunge “unwarranted” remarks made against it by the trial court while discharging them in the liquor policy case. Al-Biruni, the 10th-century Persian scholar and writer, described the coastal area near the town of Chabahar, then known as Tiz or Tis, as the “entry point or beginning of coastal India” in his Kitab Tarikh Al-Hind (A History of India).For Tehran, the port is a lifeline to global reintegration, countering decades of Western isolation. Fathali, emphasizing its regional pivot, said: “We believe Chabahar can become a vital hub connecting Central Asia to open waters.”The Chabahar Port project dates back to the 1970s, when Iran’s last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, proposed it as a deep-sea hub in the Gulf of Oman. During the Islamic revolution of 1979 in Iran and subsequent leadership transitions, work on the project slowed down. In the 1980s, when the Iran-Iraq War left Iran’s Persian Gulf routes vulnerable, Iran doubled up its focus to shift its trade and expand Chabahar.When India entered a conversation to develop the port around 2003, it mainly meant access to Afghanistan and Central Asia bypassing Pakistan. But it was also in response to the initial construction in Pakistan’s Gwadar, under Beijing’s flagship -billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).The partnership was formalised in 2015 with an MoU, with India committing up to 0 million during PM Narendra Modi’s 2016 visit to Tehran. The pact, renewed for 10 years in 2024 (earlier renewed annually), promises India a direct maritime-land corridor to Central Asia and beyond—vital for trade in minerals, grains, and energy.Through Chabahar, goods can be shipped from Indian ports to Iran and then transported by road and rail further inland, and into Russia, Central Asia, Europe.India has invested in port equipment and operations, while Iran has worked on expanding connectivity from the port to its internal transport network. India sending aid to Afghanistan (Image credit: Randhir Jaiswal on X) NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs on Sunday said that the sent humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) materials to Afghanistan amid recent floods and earthquake. “At this time of hardship being faced by Afghan people due to recent floods and earthquake, India delivers HADR materials, including kitchen sets, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, tarpaulins, sleeping bags, and more,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X. File photo: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Sunday accused the BJP of bringing in “paid supporters” from outside the state to influence the upcoming Assembly elections, while also warning her party workers to remain alert against any possible tampering of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).Addressing a press conference in connection with Union home minister Amit Shah’s rally in Bhabanipur, Banerjee alleged that the BJP was trying to import both outsiders and a culture of political hooliganism into Bengal. They are bringing in crowds of paid supporters from those states. They ran amok, tearing down posters and banners, spitting on our campaign material, harassing and heckling women bystanders, and even showing shoes at the sacred Maa Kali temple,” she alleged.Stepping up her attack, the TMC supremo said the BJP’s campaign reflected a politics of intimidation and disrespect.“This is the ‘Poriborton’ they want to force upon Bengal. A culture of goondagardi, disrespect for women, and contempt for our faith and traditions. Bengal rejects this hooliganism with utter contempt,” she added.EVM warning: ‘Keep surveillance for 24 hours’Banerjee also raised concerns over the security of EVMs and urged booth-level workers to remain especially vigilant before and after polling.“Check all EVM machines thoroughly. Booth agents should also check the EVMs thoroughly… I know their plan… After voting, under the watch of CRPF and central forces, they might go inside and change the machine, so we need to keep surveillance for 24 hours. You should carefully watch that they don’t hack the EVM,” she said, as quoted by news agency ANI.Her remarks come amid an increasingly heated election campaign in the state, with both the TMC and BJP accusing each other of intimidation and attempts to influence the electoral process.Amit Shah, BJP hit back with call to ‘vote without fear’Banerjee’s attack followed Union home minister Amit Shah’s visit to West Bengal on April 2, where he campaigned for the BJP and urged voters to remove the TMC from power.Speaking at Suvendu Adhikari’s nomination filing event, Shah said, “This time no one should fear; no goon can stop the voters of Bengal. Everyone must vote without fear to uproot and throw TMC into the Bay of Bengal.”He also made a direct appeal to voters in Bhabanipur, where Banerjee is contesting.“I appeal to the Bengal people to help Suvendu Adhikari win this election. She also claimed that the recent Malda “hostage” incident was orchestrated by the BJP.High-stakes battle as Bengal votes in two phasesWest Bengal’s 294-member Assembly will go to polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29, while counting of votes will take place on May 4. In the last Assembly election in 2021, the Trinamool Congress secured a landslide victory with 213 seats, while the BJP emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats.
