New York Giants long-time nose tackle Dexter Lawrence signed a four-year, $87M contract extension in 2023, which included a $22M signing bonus, $60M in guaranteed money, and a $21M average annual salary. As per Spotrac, he is scheduled to make $18.5M base salary and a $500K workout bonus while carrying a $26.9M cap hit and a $13.9M dead cap value in 2026.In 2024, his contract was restructured by converting $10M base salary into a signing bonus. However, he has no guaranteed money left on the final two terms of the contract [2026 and 2027].As a result, a new contract was negotiated. But after several failed attempts at creating a new deal with New York, Lawrence has requested a trade, just two weeks before the draft. He will not be participating in the team’s upcoming voluntary offseason workouts.This allows analysts to involve him in a trade package for his future franchise. Trade Package: New England receives Lawrence, whereas New York receives a 2026 second-round pick, a 2026 fourth-round pick, and a 2026 sixth-round pick in return for losing a valuable defensive lineman.The analyst notes that the Patriots have never shown they can be aggressive in defensive acquisitions, but if they could acquire the three-time Pro Bowler, they would form the league’s best defensive front alongside in-house Milton Williams and Christian Barmore. A page from their history? Last offseason, they signed several veterans: linebacker Robert Spillane, edge rusher Harold Landry III, defensive tackle Milton Williams, and cornerback Carlton Davis III. Result? They entered the Super Bowl.It looks like they are carrying forward the same approach this offseason. They have so far signed Chicago Bears safety Kevin Byard and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Dre’Mont Jones. This only shows how hungry they are for another Big Game appearance.If they wish to continue this pattern, they could easily bring in a proven interior defender on a new deal. New York could acquire Christian Barmore for losing Dexter Lawrence
The analyst also suggests that the Giants could ask for Barmore in return, but the Patriots may want to continue with him. Barmore was facing domestic assault and battery charges stemming from an alleged Aug. 2025 altercation with his then-girlfriend. But the charges were dropped by the Massachusetts prosecutors just two days before the new league year [March 9]. They cited the case was “not viable for prosecution” due to the “current state of evidence” and the complainant’s reluctance to proceed. Anyhow, coming back to Giants tackle, how good was he on the gridiron? He had a down year in 2025 season, recorded career-low 31 tackles and half-sack. However, his PFF grades were great [except for run-defense grade].The defensive tackle earned a 75.6 overall PFF grade for the 2025 season, which ranked 9th among 134 qualified interior defensive linemen. His PFF pass-rush grade was 84.5, ranked 7th among others. His PFF run-defense grade was 57.0, ranking 56th. He recorded 34 total pressures, 27 hurries, 0 forced fumbles, and 7 hits.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh spoke very highly about the defensive lineman in February: “How important is he? Really important. He’s super, super important. He’s a cornerstone football player, not really a cornerstone, more like the middle stone. He’s right in the middle. He’s a very big stone, and he’s a very active, athletic one.” If he is so important, then a contract could have been adjusted, but it wasn’t. Anyhow, New York general manager Joe Schoen did give everyone a hint about the same back at the NFL’s Annual Meeting in Phoenix. A reporter asked Schoen about the possibility of adjusting Lawrence’s contract. The GM said: “We have a lot of those conversations as we continue to build or open up money. Where can we do it? Could we do an extension with other players? What does that look like? So, we’re always having those conversations. Not only with Dexter, but with other players. That’s part of our mapping out the offseason and planning.”The planning probably reached no fruition. Or, in short, nothing in favor of the nose tackle. So, he’s requested a trade. And Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport suggests the Drake Maye-led New England Patriots. As for the Patriots’ cap space, it is $35.5M, according to OverTheCap. Williams and Barmore occupy $45.6M of their $300M cap this year.
