CHENNAI: Before any election, Congress starts its seat-share talks with a precondition: the Sriperumbudur seat should be for the party. “That’s where the temple of our leader is,” said Tamil Nadu Congress Committee chief K Selvaperunthagai, referring to the memorial of late PM Rajiv Gandhi.He won the seat in 2021; now he is seeking reelection. Despite all the emotional connection, the contest this time looks tough. KOLKATA: Arrested in the Vidyasagar statue vandalism case in 2019, BJP’s Rakesh Singh filed his nomination on Thursday, the final day for submissions, from the Kolkata Port seat while carrying a portrait of Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar, a 19th-century social reformer and one of Bengal’s icons. He said Trinamool govt had falsely accused him of vandalising Vidyasagar’s bust. “My mother did not raise me to be a hooligan,” said Singh, raising Vidyasagar’s portrait above his head. “I will campaign from Friday and will reach every corner to prove there is no ‘mini Pakistan’ here,” he added. Singh faces no fewer than 91 cases. Sasikala has now moved to the front.Evoking memories of Jayalalithaa’s roadshows, Sasikala delivers short speeches from her van at key constituencies in south Tamil Nadu. KOLKATA: The parents of Sunali Khatun, 26, the Bengal woman pushed into Bangladesh as an “illegal immigrant” last year, have their names on the voters list, strengthening her citizenship claims even as a legal battle continues for her husband and other kin packed off to the neighbouring country.Sunali’s mother, Jyotsna Bibi, was among the lakhs “under adjudication” but later made it to the list; and her father, Bhodu Sheikh, had been cleared in the Dec 2025 SIR draft list.Sunali broke into tears when she found her parents’ names on the list. Their names figured in the 2002 voter list – the reference date for SIR. Sunali is herself not a voter yet but has applied for inclusion.”I’m angry that we were tagged Bangladeshis. We are Indian citizens. Yet, we had to suffer. I could not give my kids new clothes on Eid. My husband is in Bangladesh; my kids cry for him every day. KOLKATA: The parents of Sunali Khatun, 26, the Bengal woman pushed into Bangladesh as an “illegal immigrant” last year, have their names on the voters list, strengthening her citizenship claims even as a legal battle continues for her husband and other kin packed off to the neighbouring country.Sunali’s mother, Jyotsna Bibi, was among the lakhs “under adjudication” but later made it to the list; and her father, Bhodu Sheikh, had been cleared in the Dec 2025 SIR draft list.Sunali broke into tears when she found her parents’ names on the list. Their names figured in the 2002 voter list – the reference date for SIR. Sunali is herself not a voter yet but has applied for inclusion.”I’m angry that we were tagged Bangladeshis. We are Indian citizens. Yet, we had to suffer. I could not give my kids new clothes on Eid. My husband is in Bangladesh; my kids cry for him every day. NEW DELHI: During a search in Kolkata at seven premises on Wednesday in an ongoing money laundering probe against Merlin group, a real estate developer, the ED has found the builder having associations with some senior politicians and bureaucrats from Bengal. “The role of these public servants and their financial transactions with the real estate group and its promoters are under scrutiny,” sources in ED said. The action comes ahead of polls in WB, with voting scheduled for April 23 and April 29. Officials aware of the probe said the agency has seized some “incriminating digital devices and documents from the builder’s premises that reveal his deep nexus with state officials and politicians”. To further establish a money trail in its ongoing investigation, ED is examining Merlin group promoter Sushil Mohta, Saket Mohta and other related entities. Sources said the agency is examining some documents which were fabricated to fraudulently grab various parcels of land in Kolkata, including public land too. “Subsequently, the accused people commercially exploited the land by launching large-scale real estate projects.
