The NSCN(IM) has declared that a Naga national flag and constitution are essential and cannot be compromised. The group will not recognise any agreement signed by the Indian government with other Naga factions that does not include these demands. This stance continues to prolong the ongoing peace talks. Muivah, the leader, recently visited his ancestral village after a long absence. Thuingaleng Muivah (L), protestors (R) (File photos) NEW DELHI: NSCN(IM) on Wednesday said that a Naga national flag and constitution was non-negotiable, and any agreement signed by the central government with Naga groups other than it will not be recognised.Speaking in Manipur’s Ukhrul district and reading out a message from Thuingaleng Muivah, the general secretary of the separatist outfit, who was visiting his birthplace after 50 years but was too frail to speak, veteran leader VS Atem recalled the 1997 Indo-Naga ceasefire and the key milestones achieved since then.Headded that ongoing Indo-Naga dialogue follows three principles: discussions must be unconditional, held at the highest level, and conducted in a third country. After over 70 rounds of talks, the Centre signed the Framework Agreement with NSCN-IM in 2015. However, NSCN-IM’s demand for a separate Naga flag and constitution has not been accepted, prolonging negotiations. In 2017, the Centre also began talks with the WC NNPGs, a coalition of seven Naga groups, and signed the Agreed Position. While the WC NNPGs have shown willingness to compromise, NSCN-IM insists it will not accept any solution without a separate flag and constitution.Muivah reached his birthplace Somdal village in Ukhrul district soon after the programme. He is scheduled to stay there for a week before returning to Dimapur via Senapati district on 29 October. He also thanked the governments of India, Nagaland, and Manipur for facilitating his visit to his birthplace, Somdal village.Muivah, who spent 40 years leading an armed struggle for Naga independence in the jungles and living abroad in countries like Thailand and the Netherlands, has been part of peace talks with the Centre since the ceasefire agreement on 1 August 1997.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Chirag Paswan launched a scathing attack on the Mahagathbandhan, declaring it has collapsed and their power aspirations are mere “Mungeri Lal ke sapne.” He questioned the alliance’s coordination, specifically targeting Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav. Paswan also defended Chief Minister Nitish Kumar against personal attacks, highlighting the NDA’s unity and focus on development. NEW DELHI: Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJP(RV)) chief Chirag Paswan on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the “collapsed” Mahagathbandhan alliance claiming that their hopes of coming to power are nothing but “Mungeri Lal ke sunehre sapne.””The way an infighting is going on in the Mahagathbandhan and the way the alliance has completely collapsed, even after that if they are thinking that they will come to power, I think it is nothing less than ‘Mungeri Lal ke sunehre sapne,” Paswan told reporters in Patna. The Union minister further questioned the visibility and coordination of alliance leaders, taking a dig at Rahul Gandhi, asking, “Where is Rahul Gandhi?”Tejashwi Slams Double-Engine Govt on Corruption,Assures No Seat-Sharing Disputes in Mahagathbandhan “Today, after so many days, they addressed the media. Where were they for so long? Today, Ashok Gehlot has come to Bihar after everything is over in the Mahagathbandhan,” he stated.”Where is Rahul Gandhi, who was roaming around earlier and misleading people over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR)? Is it not a moral responsibility for Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav to sit together and resolve the seat-sharing issue with maturity?” he added.Paswan also took a swipe at Tejashwi Yadav for sharing a video of chief minister Nitish Kumar, questioning his health and ability to continue in office.”The CM, who has been attacked personally by Mahagathbandhan leaders, despite that, they need to learn that, they are commenting, and he is campaigning. They should now tell whose health is better. They are not able to step out from air-conditioners. They are questioning the health of the CM, rather the health of Mahagathbandhan has been affected completely,” Paswan said.Defending Nitish Kumar, Paswan added, “They should rather think how much he is worried for Bihar, and how hard he is working. We are united. NDA leaders are campaigning. They are not able to handle their coalition and are talking about handling Bihar.”The remarks came after Tejashwi Yadav posted on X, saying, “If the chief minister is healthy, then why is he acting like this while reading a written speech?”Earlier in the day, addressing a public rally, Paswan also accused the RJD-Congress alliance of dividing people for votes. “What is their MY equation? M is dividing Biharis along communal lines. Y is dividing Biharis along ethnic lines. Similarly, we also talk about the MY equation, but our M includes women representing not only the nation but also the world. Similarly, Y represents not only the youth of the nation but also the world,” he said.Reaffirming his political resolve, the LJP chief declared, “Countless attempts were made to defeat and break Chirag Paswan. But I am a son of Khagaria. I am a lion’s son. I am the son of Ram Vilas Paswan.”Paswan said the NDA is united and focused on development. “We want to move forward with this MY equation. I want to rise above caste, creed, and religion, and ensure that every Bihari youth gets employment. Every Bihari woman gets respect. The elderly get their rights. We work to ensure that farmers and labourers get their due. Our alliance is moving forward with this vision. Countless attempts were made to defeat, break, Chirag Paswan. But I am a son of Khagaria. Former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa and his wife, Razia Sultana, are under probe for their son’s death, which they attribute to drug overdose. Mustafa revealed his son’s 18-year drug addiction and violent episodes, claiming a video alleging foul play was a product of his son’s psychotic disorder and is being misused. NEW DELHI: Former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, now at the centre of a murder and conspiracy probe along with his wife, former minister Razia Sultana, has rejected allegations that they were involved in the death of their son.Speaking to reporters in Saharanpur, the retired IPS officer made startling revelations about his late son, Aakil Akhtar, saying, “My son had been a drug addict for 18 years. I used to lock him in the room for two to three days. Got him treated at several places.” Mustafa said the family had been “grieving” since Akhtar’s death but would now “face the allegations like a soldier,” PTI quoted him saying.“On October 16, when we entered the room, he was already dead. He was consuming excessive drugs. We knew allegations would be made, that’s why we got the post-mortem done,” he said. Mustafa added that as a former police chief, he understood the process and welcomed the registration of a case. “An SIT has been formed; everything will become clear,” he said.Panchkula DCP Srishti Gupta confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against the family under sections of murder and conspiracy. “Former DGP Mohammad Mustafa and former minister Razia Sultana’s son, Aakil Akhtar, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at his residence in MDC, Panchkula. The complainant has expressed suspicions of foul play,” Gupta said. She added that a Special Investigation Team has been set up to ensure a “scientific and transparent probe”.The FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint by Shamshuddin, who claimed that Akhtar had posted a video on social media alleging that his family might “frame him in a false case” or have him “killed”. “Their plan is to have me falsely imprisoned or even killed,” Akhtar said in the purported video, also alleging that his family dismissed his concerns as delusions.Mustafa, however, insisted that his son had been suffering from a long-term psychotic disorder and that the video was being “misused to malign the family”. “He often became violent due to his illness. In 2008, he even broke his mother’s hip, but we said she had fallen. We are public figures, so we tried to hide these matters, but now the truth must come out,” Mustafa said.He added that Akhtar had posted the video on August 27 but deleted it two hours later. “Certain individuals downloaded it and are now using it against us,” he said, terming the entire controversy a “conspiracy against a high-profile family”.The viscera report is awaited, while the SIT continues to investigate the cause of death. “The truth will come out,” Mustafa said. “I have buried the father inside me.”(With inputs from agencies)About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. PUNE: Bronze Age traders crossing Gujarat stopped at well-organised roadside facilities that offered shelter, food, security and stables for their pack animals.A new multidisciplinary study by Pune-based Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Symbiosis School for Liberal Arts, and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), New Delhi, published in L’Anthropologie (Elsevier, 2025), has identified a 4,000-year-old Harappan settlement at Kotada Bhadli in Kutch as the earliest known caravanserai — a fortified rural stopover that supported long-distance trade between 2300 and 1900 BCE. The findings now push back the origins of organised trade infrastructure in the subcontinent by over 2,000 years.Lead researcher Prabodh Shirvalkar from Deccan College told TOI: “This is the first confirmed archaeological evidence of a caravanserai in the Harappan world — a type of infrastructure previously known only from later historical periods.”Excavated between 2010 and 2013 in collaboration with Gujarat State Archaeology Department, the site has now been reinterpreted using advanced techniques— including ground penetrating radar, magnetic and satellite surveys, isotopic and lipid analyses, and three forms of dating, Shirvalkar added.Researchers, including Esha Prasad and Yadubirsingh Rawat, said the finding bridges a key missing link in the trade mechanism of the Indus Valley Civilization, revealing how long-distance overland trade was supported by an organised system of rest stops and logistical hubs — a structure previously thought to have emerged only in the early historic or medieval periods. While the existence of Harappan trade with Mesopotamia and inland India is well-established, the mechanism of how merchants, animals and goods actually moved across land remained unclear. The new study proposes that Harappan commerce depended on a network of small fortified stopovers, strategically placed along trade routes between urban centres like Dholavira, Lothal and Shikarpur in Gujarat.Earlier excavations revealed a multi-roomed central building, fortified walls with bastions, and large open spaces that were likely used to hold animals and goods — all consistent with a caravanserai’s layout.Shirvalkar added that the site was small, strategically placed and fortified, but non-urban — designed for short halts rather than permanent residence. By identifying caravanserai-like traits — fortification, animal pens, open spaces, food waste and imported goods — the paper said that Harappans maintained an organised trade infrastructure two millennia before the Silk Route.“The Harappan economy was not just about city markets and ports like Dholavira or Lothal. It had a logistical backbone. Caravanserais that sustained traders on long inland routes,” Shirvalkar said.About the AuthorNeha MadaanNeha Madaan is a senior feature writer at The Times of India, Pune. Bihar’s Mahagathbandhan alliance is experiencing internal friction. Seat-sharing issues are causing confusion and overlapping nominations for the upcoming 2025 assembly elections. Smaller allies feel sidelined, with JMM withdrawing from the state-level arrangement. These coordination challenges could impact vote splits in key constituencies. Leaders are working to resolve disputes before polling begins. Tejashwi Yadav and Rahul Gandhi (File photo) NEW DELHI: The opposition Mahagathbandhan in Bihar is showing visible signs of internal tensions ahead of the 2025 assembly elections. The coalition, comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and Left parties, has struggled to finalise seat-sharing arrangements, resulting in overlapping nominations, last-minute withdrawals, and what leaders describe as “friendly fights” across several constituencies. At the centre of the friction lies the distribution of Bihar’s 243 assembly seats among alliance partners. The RJD, the dominant party in the bloc, has fielded 143 candidates, while Congress is contesting 61 seats and the remaining seats are being shared among the CPI(ML) and smaller allies. In several constituencies, including Vaishali and Darbhanga, both RJD and Congress candidates have entered the fray, creating confusion within local units. In Darbhanga’s Gaura Bauram seat, for instance, an RJD nominee remained in the contest even after the constituency was allocated to the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) following last-minute negotiations. With the nomination deadline already over for Phase 1, the candidate could not withdraw, forcing RJD leaders to campaign in a seat technically assigned to an ally. The withdrawal date for Phase 2 ends on Thursday.A similar overlap has been reported in parts of the Vaishali district, where local committees of both RJD and Congress have announced nominees despite attempts by the central leadership to coordinate. Reports say the absence of a formal, written seat-sharing pact has contributed to these overlaps.Smaller allies ‘sidelined’Smaller partners within the Mahagathbandhan have voiced concern over being sidelined during seat negotiations. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which was expected to contest a few constituencies in Bihar’s tribal belt, has announced its withdrawal from the alliance’s state-level arrangement. The party has stated that its demands were overlooked and its traditional strongholds, such as Chakai, Katoria, and Pirpainti, were allotted to other partners without prior consultation. The JMM’s exit may have limited numerical impact but weakens the alliance’s presence in tribal-dominated areas along the Bihar–Jharkhand border. Political observers note that these constituencies, though few in number, carry symbolic importance for the alliance’s claim of statewide unity. The coordination challengeAnother factor behind the infighting is the timing of decisions. Seat-sharing talks extended until the final week of nominations, leaving little room for adjustments once candidate lists were announced. According to reports, a compressed timeline led to confusion at the constituency level, with multiple candidates filing papers under different assumptions about which party would ultimately get the seat.Regional hotspotsThe friction is most visible in northern Bihar, particularly in the Darbhanga, Vaishali, and Muzaffarpur regions, where both RJD and Congress have significant local presence and overlapping support bases. In the southern border districts, the fallout from JMM’s withdrawal is expected to be felt in tribal-majority seats, where coordination with Left allies and local independents will be crucial. These regions were earlier part of a planned joint campaign involving RJD and JMM leaders.Implications for the allianceThe immediate concern for the alliance is the possibility of vote-splitting in constituencies where partners are contesting against each other. In Bihar’s closely fought seats, even a small division of votes can alter outcomes. For example, if an NDA candidate secures about 40 per cent of the vote while RJD and Congress share 30 per cent and 25 per cent respectively, the NDA retains the seat despite a combined opposition vote of 55 per cent. Going by the example, if such divisions remain unresolved, it could impact 15–20 constituencies across the state. The ruling NDA has used the situation to question the opposition’s ability to coordinate. Party leaders have remarked that those unable to manage seat-sharing may struggle to run a cohesive government.Efforts at damage controlRJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and senior Congress leaders have begun internal reviews to identify “official” candidates in disputed constituencies. Both parties are reportedly trying to persuade duplicate candidates to withdraw or coordinate campaigns jointly.Leaders within the Mahagathbandhan have maintained that disagreements are “routine” in multi-party coalitions and will be settled before polling. The Mahagathbandhan’s coordination problems, however, have brought to the fore the challenges of managing Bihar’s coalition politics. The contest is expected to remain competitive, but the level of internal cooperation could determine the alliance’s performance in key regions. While the bloc remains intact formally, its internal friction highlights the difficulty of translating national opposition unity into effective ground-level coordination in Bihar.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Prime Minister Modi celebrated Deepavali, linking it to national progress and Lord Ram’s ideals of justice. He highlighted the eradication of Naxalism in several districts and praised economic reforms like the GST Savings Festival. PM Modi emphasized India’s rising global influence and urged citizens towards self-reliance and unity, inspired by the festival’s spirit of shared light. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday penned a letter to citizens on the occasion of Deepavali, highlighting the festival as a time of energy, enthusiasm, and reflection on the nation’s achievements. In his message, he noted that this is the second Deepavali after the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and emphasised Lord Shri Ram’s teachings on righteousness and courage in fighting injustice.PM Modi referred to “Operation Sindoor” as a recent example of upholding justice, adding that the festival is particularly special this year as lamps will be lit in many districts, including remote areas, where Naxalism and Maoist terrorism have been eradicated. He praised citizens who have abandoned violence and embraced development, viewing it as a major achievement for the nation.’Naxal-Maoist Terror Nearly Wiped Out Across India’: PM Modi Hails Police, CRPF, BSF”I extend my heartfelt greetings to all of you on the auspicious occasion of Deepavali, a festival filled with energy and enthusiasm. This is the second Deepavali after the grand construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Lord Shri Ram teaches us to uphold righteousness and also gives us the courage to fight injustice. We have seen a living example of this a few months ago during Operation Sindoor. During Operation Sindoor, Bharat not only upheld righteousness but also avenged injustice,” he said.PollDo you believe the construction of the Ram Temple has a significant impact on the celebration of Deepavali this year?Yes, it’s very impactfulNo, it doesn’t change much”This Deepavali is particularly special because, for the first time, lamps will be lit in many districts across the country, including remote areas. These are the districts where Naxalism and Maoist terrorism have been eradicated from the root. In recent times, we have seen many individuals abandoning the path of violence and joining the mainstream of development, expressing faith in the Constitution of our country. This is a major achievement for the nation,” he added.Highlighting recent economic reforms, the Prime Minister mentioned the implementation of lower GST rates during the “GST Bachat Utsav” (Savings Festival), which has helped citizens save thousands of crores of rupees. PM Modi also underlined India’s growing global stature, describing the country as a symbol of stability and sensitivity and projecting it to soon become the world’s third-largest economy. As he highlighted India’s reforms, achievements and policies, he added, “In a world going through multiple crises, Bharat has emerged as a symbol of both stability and sensitivity. We are also on track to become the third-largest economy in the world in the near future.”Calling for collective responsibility, PM Modi urged citizens to adopt Swadeshi products, promote “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”, respect all languages, maintain cleanliness, prioritise health, reduce oil consumption, and embrace Yoga. He drew inspiration from Deepavali’s symbolism, saying, “when one lamp lights another, its light doesn’t diminish, but it grows further,” and encouraged spreading harmony, cooperation, and positivity. “Let us adopt “Swadeshi” (local products) and proudly say: “This is Swadeshi!” Let us promote the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”. Let us respect all languages. Let us maintain cleanliness. Let us prioritize our health. Let us reduce the use of oil in our food by 10% and embrace Yoga. All these efforts will rapidly move us towards a “Viksit Bharat”, he said. The Prime Minister also urged citizens to contribute to building a “Viksit” (developed) and “Aatmanirbhar” (self-reliant) India. This comes a day after PM Modi celebrated aboard INS Vikrant with Navy personnel during which he witnessed MiGs in action, singing programs and addressed armed forces.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. The former CM described his son’s detention as an act of political vendetta and an example of silencing dissent.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Bihar’s 2025 assembly elections are witnessing a cinematic twist with folk singer Maithili Thakur and Bhojpuri actors Khesari Lal Yadav and Pawan Singh entering the political arena. The BJP and RJD are leveraging their star power and regional appeal to consolidate caste loyalties and energize voters, blending celebrity charisma with intricate political calculations. (From left) Pawan Singh, Maithili Thakur and Khesari Lal Yadav NEW DELHI: Bihar’s election stage has always had drama, but this time, the script has a cinematic twist. Folk singer Maithili Thakur, and Bhojpuri actors Khesari Lal Yadav and Pawan Singh, have all entered the political frame, turning the 2025 assembly battle into a fusion of star power and caste calculation. The BJP has fielded Maithili Thakur from Alinagar in Darbhanga, while the RJD has handed its Chapra ticket to Khesari Lal Yadav. Adding to the intrigue, Pawan Singh, who was once at odds with the BJP, has rejoined the party after months of speculation.Shah Avoids Naming Bihar CM Face, Says Bihar CM to Be Decided by Elected MLAsTogether, the three represent how Bihar’s two biggest parties are turning to popular faces from music and cinema to stir old loyalties and reshape caste equations.Maithili Thakur: The Mithila pride cardAlinagar sits in the heart of the Mithila region, where identity and language carry deep cultural pride. The BJP’s choice of Maithili Thakur is not just a nod to local sentiment but also a tactical move to expand appeal in a seat that has been closely fought. The constituency has shifted hands several times in recent years, and margins have been narrow. Maithili, a household name in the region, brings a blend of youth connect and cultural symbolism that the BJP hopes can widen its support base beyond traditional voters. Her campaign songs and folk roots are expected to draw attention across caste lines, especially among women and young voters who form a decisive chunk of the electorate.Khesari Lal Yadav: RJD’s bid for the massesIf the BJP is playing the Mithila card, the RJD has chosen to bank on Bhojpuri stardom. Khesari Lal Yadav’s candidature from Chapra in Saran district is designed to add glamour to a contest that has long been decided by caste arithmetic.Chapra has traditionally been a battleground between Yadavs and Rajputs, and the RJD’s decision to field Khesari is an attempt to consolidate the Yadav vote while energising youth and migrant workers who idolise him. The BJP won Chapra in 2020, but with thin margins. Khesari’s popularity among lower and backward castes gives the RJD a chance to turn that equation on its head. The party hopes that his folk appeal, built through music that often celebrates aspiration and struggle, will connect emotionally with voters who see politics through the lens of identity and pride rather than policy. The BJP-Pawan Singh reunionThe BJP’s patch-up with Pawan Singh was as political as it was pragmatic. A Rajput by caste and a massive name in the Bhojpuri entertainment industry, Singh had previously rebelled and flirted with contesting independently. His differences with the BJP had threatened to split the Rajput vote, especially in the Shahabad and Bhojpur regions where caste balance is delicate. His return to the party fold is a calculated move to heal that rift. BJP leaders believe Singh’s presence will help consolidate upper-caste support and attract younger, entertainment-driven voters who identify with his larger-than-life persona. The party has suffered from factionalism in parts of Shahabad, and Singh’s popularity in districts like Arrah, Buxar, and Karakat could help the BJP offset anti-incumbency and regain lost ground. The caste arithmeticAccording to Census data and voter surveys, the caste profile of these regions explains why the BJP and RJD chose their celebrity candidates so carefully. In Darbhanga’s Alinagar, upper castes, especially Maithil Brahmins and Rajputs, together account for about 25 to 30 per cent of the electorate, while Yadavs, Muslims, and EBC groups form the rest.Maithili Thakur’s candidature appeals directly to the Maithil Brahmin identity and to cultural pride cutting across caste lines. In Saran’s Chapra, Yadavs make up roughly 20 to 22 per cent, Rajputs and Bhumihars about 15 to 18 per cent, and EBCs and Muslims the remainder. That arithmetic explains why the RJD placed its faith in Khesari Lal Yadav to deepen Yadav consolidation while reaching EBC and lower-caste Bhojpuri voters who relate to him.Further west, in the Shahabad and Bhojpur belt, where Pawan Singh holds sway, Rajputs and Bhumihars together exceed 25 per cent, making them a crucial bloc for the BJP to retain. His re-entry aims to keep that segment united and offset the erosion seen in parts of Arrah and Karakat during 2024.While celebrity names attract attention, they do not always convert into victories. Bihar’s elections are fought at the booth level, where caste networks, local loyalty, and the ground machinery of parties still decide outcomes.Maithili’s appeal may help the BJP in Mithila, but it will need organisational muscle to translate her popularity into votes. Khesari’s fame gives the RJD visibility, but turning fans into voters requires the kind of micro-level mobilisation that only a well-oiled party machine can provide.Pawan Singh’s Rajput credentials may strengthen the BJP’s caste equation, but overreliance on charisma can backfire if local candidates fail to deliver on expectations. The entry of Maithili Thakur, Khesari Lal Yadav, and Pawan Singh has turned Bihar’s election into a curious blend of celebrity, caste, and calculation. The BJP and RJD are both using star power to energise their bases, yet beneath the glamour, it remains a story about numbers, of seats, votes, and social groups.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Satellite phone services have been restored for over 30 fishermen from Tamil Nadu. The Department of Telecommunications and BSNL intervened to bring back Inmarsat connectivity. A private operator also provided temporary service. This enabled stranded fishermen to receive weather alerts and return safely. Efforts are ongoing to ensure full service restoration for all. Representational image (PTI file photo) NEW DELHI: More than 30 fishermen from Tamil Nadu, who were stranded at sea amid rough weather, have regained satellite phone connectivity after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) restored Inmarsat services, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday. Sitharaman said a private operator had also temporarily resumed connectivity for several users, helping many stranded fishermen receive weather alerts and take precautions to return safely. In a post on X, she wrote, “Heartening to note that Inmarsat satellite phone services have been restored for over 30 fishermen currently out in the deep sea, following the intervention of BSNL and DoT. The private operator has temporarily resumed connectivity successfully for many users, enabling communication with those at high sea.”Sitharaman also mentioned that BSNL and the DoT are working with the private operator to ensure full service restoration for the remaining fishermen. On Sunday, she had said the Centre was working to restore connectivity after being informed about the loss of contact with several fishermen at sea. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of a low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal, likely to intensify into a deep depression and cause rough sea conditions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Comorin area, and coastal regions of Karnataka, Kerala, and south Tamil Nadu till October 21. The warning extends to parts of the Arabian Sea on October 22 and 23.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
