A 20-year-old man suffered over 70% burn injuries in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district after being allegedly tied to an electric pole and set on fire by three minors. The victim identified his attackers, who have been detained. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim may have purchased the petrol himself, with CCTV footage collected. Representational image NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old man sustained over 70 per cent burn injuries after he was allegedly tied to an electric pole and set on fire by three minors in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district on Friday, police said. The three juveniles named by the victim have been detained for questioning, officials added. According to police, the incident occurred in the Mustafabad Nai Basti area under the Islamnagar police station limits when the victim, Mahboob, was returning home after offering Friday prayers. The accused allegedly intercepted him, tied him to a pole, poured petrol over him, and set him on fire.As the ropes burned away, Mahboob managed to break free and reach home, screaming for help. He was initially admitted to a community health centre in critical condition and later referred to the district hospital for further treatment. Preliminary investigation indicates that Mahboob had a verbal altercation with the accused a day earlier during prayers at a local mosque. His maternal uncle, Kaisar, told reporters that Mahboob was severely burnt and unable to see due to swelling around his eyes, but said he could identify the attackers once his condition improved. Superintendent of Police (Rural) Hirdayesh Kumar Katheria mentioned that no prior complaint regarding the dispute had been received. “Evidence suggests the victim himself purchased petrol from a nearby pump around the same time. CCTV footage from the pump has been collected, and the circumstances appear suspicious,” he noted. Further inquiry is underway to establish the exact sequence of events and determine the motive behind the incident, the officer added.(With PTI inputs)About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar confirmed the cancellation of a land deal involving his son, Parth Pawar, amid allegations of irregularities. Pawar asserted his and his office’s non-involvement, emphasizing transparency. The government has formed a committee to probe the matter, with an FIR already registered. Strict action will follow if wrongdoing is established. Ajit Pawar (ANI image) NEW DELHI: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Friday said that a land deal involving his son Parth Pawar has been cancelled amid allegations of irregularities in the transaction. Addressing reporters after meeting chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Pawar said his son and his business partner were unaware that the land in Pune, which their company had agreed to purchase, belonged to the government.“The concerned land is a government land which cannot be sold. Parth and his partner Digvijay Patil were not aware of this fact. How the registration (of its sale) was done and who is responsible will come out in the probe being headed by ACS Vikas Kharge, who will submit his report in a month,” he said. Pawar maintained that transparency and adherence to the law remain his top priorities. “I have never flouted any rules in my 35-year political career. If anyone from my family or anyone close to me does something wrong, I will never support it. I have gathered all information about the case and spoken to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. I told him he can order a probe.”He confirmed that the sale documents and related transactions “have been cancelled,” and that affidavits to this effect have been submitted to the registering authorities. “Not a rupee has changed hands in the deal,” he said.He added: ” I want to make it clear that neither I nor my office made any phone calls, gave any help, or had any role or knowledge about this transaction at any stage.”Pawar further said that he has directed all officials under him not to succumb to any pressure, even if someone uses his name to influence a decision.”There is no transaction in the related case as yet. FIR has also been registered in the said case. Who had put pressure on officers, who were involved, who had carried out the transaction, everything will be investigated,” he added. In a formal statement issued, Pawar clarified that the deal was only an agreement to purchase land and no payment had been made by Parth or his firm, Amadea Enterprises LLP. “My son Parth says that the proposed deal was within the ambit of the law and was completely above board. However, in public life, we must not allow even the suspicion of wrongdoing. Since allegations of wrongdoing have been made, he has agreed to cancel the deal. The required document for cancellation of the sale deed has already been submitted to the registering authority,” the statement read…He reiterated that neither he nor his office made any calls or provided assistance at any stage.“I have always worked within the limits of law and rules. Every decision I take is based on fairness and legality. These principles apply equally to everyone, including my family members,” Pawar added. He further emphasised that the NCP and its members hold themselves to “the highest standards of probity and accountability.”The controversy erupted after reports surfaced that a company linked to Parth Pawar had agreed to buy 40 acres of government land in Pune’s Mundhwa area, valued around Rs 1,800 crore for Rs 300 crore, allegedly bypassing due procedures and stamp duty.Following preliminary findings, the state government suspended a sub-registrar and registered an FIR against three individuals, including a company partner and a government official. CM Fadnavis said that the inquiry will determine whether any irregularities occurred. He further added that “strict action will be taken if wrongdoing is established.”Meanwhile, political reactions have intensified. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that government land reserved for Dalits had been sold “at a throwaway price” to a minister’s family member, calling it “land theft.” He also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the issue.Pawar further said that an inquiry committee has been appointed to investigate the matter and urged anyone with relevant information or evidence to come forward and present it before the panel.“The government has appointed an inquiry committee to look into the matter. Anyone who has information or evidence should present it before the committee. The truth will emerge through this process, and if anyone is found responsible for any wrongdoing, action will be taken,” he said.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Instagram @/4cleanindia A viral video of a man being publicly shamed for urinating outside Delhi’s Red Fort metro station has sparked debate about civic responsibility and public shaming. The clip, filmed by a foreign social media influencer, shows the man being confronted by bystanders after relieving himself near the crowded station. The incident occurred when @4cleanindia, a foreign national known for his cleanliness campaigns in India, was conducting a drive near the historic monument along with a group of young local volunteers. Their attention was drawn to a man openly urinating in a corner of the public area.In the now-viral footage, the man is seen continuing his act even as onlookers begin recording and confronting him. The situation quickly drew a crowd, with the foreign influencer and his team applauding sarcastically to highlight the inappropriate behavior. The accused individual eventually ran from the scene after being confronted. The influencer shared the video on Instagram with the caption: “How should we approach this kind of behaviour?” Netizens were quick to react, with many criticising the man’s apparent lack of remorse. One user pointedly remarked, “I am wondering even a policeman is there watching, isn’t there no fine for urinating in public? Shouldn’t he impose fine instead of watching?”This isn’t the first time @4cleanindia has shown the strange contrasts in Indian cities. In a previous post, he pointed out a sharp difference between wealth and filth. The video showed an expensive BMW parked right beside a huge pile of uncollected trash. His caption perfectly described the scene: “I’m used to seeing plastic, food leftovers, and diapers while cleaning… but never a BMW.”The recent urination incident has renewed discussions about public hygiene in the capital. World Cup-winning women’s cricket team members Amanjot Kaur and Harleen Deol were welcomed with sweets and beats of the dhol by their families and top leaders of Punjab’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as they landed at their home base here on Friday. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side scripted a defining moment for Indian women’s cricket by winning its maiden global title — the 50-over World Cup — with a 52-run victory over South Africa in the final in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. Punjab’s Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and AAP MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer were among the ruling party leaders present at the airport to receive the two players and accord them a grand welcome. The family members of the two players and several fans were also present, eagerly waiting for their arrival. Soon after they came out of the airport, Cheema and Hayer offered the two players sweets and honoured them by presenting shawls. Speaking to reporters, Amanjot said, “This victory is of entire India, entire Punjab.” She also said that the team members did not sleep after the semi-final win over mighty Australia. “Later, on the day of the (final) victory too, we did not sleep,” she said. Deol said her family always supported her dreams. “Girls can bring laurels when given freedom and opportunity. My family always supported me. I want to give a message to parents that give freedom to your daughters … I want to tell girls that they must follow their passion and work hard,” Deol said. “We had belief that we will do well and lift the Cup”. Hayer, who earlier also served as Sports Minister in the AAP government in Punjab before contesting last year’s Lok Sabha polls, said the state government has a sports-friendly approach. Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said, “On behalf of the Punjab government, I welcome all the daughters, they are making us proud. The daughters are bringing laurels in other sports too at various international competitions”. Amanjot’s cousin Satwinder Kaur, meanwhile, recalled the time when the cricketer used to play with boys. “She also broke many window panes in the neighbourhood while she used to play…The family supported her throughout to excel in life,” she said excitedly. The family members also danced to the beats of ‘dhol’. Later, the two players headed for their homes in an open vehicle, with their family members, Minister Harpal Cheema and some others accompanying them. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met the team at his residence and lauded the players for their remarkable resilience and comeback after enduring a tough phase marked by three consecutive defeats. In lighter vein, Modi also spoke about Amanjot’s juggling catch in the final. Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the 1937 Congress government of removing stanzas from Vande Mataram, claiming it fractured the song and sowed seeds of partition. He emphasized the song’s enduring inspiration for nation-building and highlighted India’s civilisational ethos of the nation as a mother and Shakti. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accused the 1937 Congress of “removing important stanzas” from the original Vande Mataram, saying the decision not only “broke the song into pieces” but also “sowed the seeds of partition.”Speaking at an event marking 150 years of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, PM Modi said, “Unfortunately, in 1937, important stanzas were removed from the original Vande Bharat song. Vande Bharat was broken into pieces. This also sowed the seeds of partition. Why was this injustice done? The same divisive ideology remains a challenge for the nation.”PM Modi Calls Vande Mataram A ‘Mantra Of Unity And Courage’ As The Song Completes 150 YearsThe Prime Minister said the song continues to inspire generations and called upon the youth to remain focused on building a Viksit Bharat despite attempts to mislead them. “On our way to Viksit Bharat, we will find people who misguide us. People with a pessimistic outlook will try to sow doubt in our minds. In such times, Vande Mataram inspires us. How can a mother who has crores of children be weak? Bharat Mata has 140 crore children, has 280 crore arms, and more than 60% are young. We have the world’s biggest demographic advantage. Nothing is impossible for us,” he said.Congress president Kharge hits backMeanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of saying those celebrating Vande Mataram’s anniversary have never sung it in their offices or shakhas.“It is deeply ironic that those who today claim to be the self-proclaimed guardians of nationalism — the RSS and the BJP — have never sung Vande Mataram or our National Anthem Jana Gana Mana in their shakhas or offices. Instead, they continue to sing Namaste Sada Vatsale, a song glorifying their organisations, not the nation,” Kharge said in an official statement. He added, “Since its founding in 1925, the RSS has avoided Vande Mataram, despite its universal reverence. Not once in its texts or literature does the song find mention.”Kharge also drew a contrast with Congress traditions, noting that Vande Mataram has been part of every party meeting and event since 1986. “The Congress Party takes immense pride in both Vande Mataram and Jana Gana Mana. Both songs are sung with reverence at every Congress gathering and event, symbolising India’s unity and pride,” he said.‘RSS avoided national symbols, supported Britishers’Continuing his criticism, Kharge accused the Sangh of having “stood with the British” during India’s independence movement. “It is a well-known fact that the RSS and Sangh Parivar supported the British against Indians in the National Movement, did not raise the National Flag for 52 years, abused the Constitution of India, burnt effigies of Bapu and Babasaheb Ambedkar, and, in the words of Sardar Patel, were involved in Gandhiji’s assassination,” Kharge said.Recalling the song’s history, the Congress president said the party had been the “proud flagbearer of Vande Mataram” since the late 19th century. “It was during the 1896 session of the Congress in Calcutta, under the leadership of the then Congress President Rahmatullah Sayani, that Vande Mataram was sung publicly for the first time by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. That moment infused new life into the freedom struggle,” Kharge said.He added that Vande Mataram emerged as a song of unity and defiance against the British policy of divide and rule. “The Congress understood that the British Empire’s manipulation of religious, caste, and regional identities was designed to break India’s unity. Against this, Vande Mataram rose as a song of unflinching strength, uniting all Indians in devotion to Bharat Mata,” he said.‘Vande Mataram’ shattered British propagandaRecalling the circumstances under which Vande Mataram was written, PM Modi said Bankim Chandra Chatterjee composed it when India was struggling under British rule and economic exploitation. “When Bankim Babu composed Vande Mataram, India was far removed from its golden era. Foreign invaders, their attacks and the exploitative policies of the British had left our country in the clutches of poverty and starvation. Even in those dire circumstances, Bankim Babu called for a prosperous India,” he said.“During that period of slavery, the British justified their rule by portraying India as inferior and backward. The first line (Sujalam, Suphalam) completely destroyed that propaganda. Vande Mataram not only became the song of independence, but also presented that prosperous, fruitful dream of what an independent India would be like,” PM Modi added.‘Vande Mataram’ is timelessThe Prime Minister quoted Rabindranath Tagore’s remarks on Bankim Chandra’s Anandamath, describing it as more than just a novel. “Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore once said that Bankim Chandra’s ‘Anandmath’ is not just a novel. It is a dream of an independent India. Every word written by Bankim Babu had deep meaning. This song was created during the time of slavery, but it is not limited to that time. The Vande Bharat song is relevant in every era. One-fourth share of global GDP was with India just a few centuries ago,” he said.‘Nation as mother, nation as strength’Highlighting India’s civilisational ethos, Modi said the idea of the nation as a mother has been deeply rooted in Indian tradition. “Our Vedas have taught us that the nation is our mother and we are her children. We have worshipped our nation in this form since the Vedic period. The emotion that a nation can be a mother can be surprising for those who view nations as a geopolitical entity. But India is different. Here, a nation is also the one that gives birth and the one that nurtures. She is also a destroyer if a child is in danger. Because of this emotion of considering the nation as mother and a form of Shakti, mahila shakti was forefront in building the nation,” Modi said.He added, “The concept of India is the ideological force behind it. The sense of one’s independent existence. Only from the depths of the heart and the infinity of emotions does a composition like Vande Mataram emerge. In that period of slavery, Vande Mataram became the proclamation of this resolve. And that proclamation was of India’s independence. The chains of slavery would be broken by the hands of Mother India, and her children would become the makers of their own destiny.”‘A historic day’Calling the day a moment of national pride, Modi said, “Today, November 7, is a historic day. We are having a grand celebration of 150 years of the creation of Vande Mataram. This event will generate new energy among crores of Indians. My greeting to every citizen on the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram.”BJP targets Nehru-era CongressEarlier in the day, BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan accused former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru of committing a “historic sin” by truncating stanzas from Vande Mataram that hailed Goddess Durga during the 1937 Faizpur session of the Congress. He claimed Nehru’s letter to Subhash Chandra Bose from that year described the hymn as unsuitable for adoption as a national song.Kesavan alleged that the Congress “deliberately removed” the Durga stanzas to appease communal sentiments. He also drew a link between Nehru’s position and Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks on Shakti, calling it a continuation of a “Hindu Virodhi mentality.”The government has announced a year-long celebration to mark the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’, including the release of a commemorative stamp and coin.‘Vande Mataram’, composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, was first published in 1875 in the journal ‘Bangadarshan’ and later included in his novel ‘Anandamath’. The song was set to music by Rabindranath Tagore and became a rallying cry during India’s freedom struggle.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday said that no one can blame the pilot-in-command of the Air India Boeing Dreamliner that crashed moments after taking off in Ahmedabad and killing 260 people. The apex court told the 91-year-old father that his son, Sumeet Sabharwal, is not to be blamed and “you should not carry the burden on yourself.”The bench of justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi added that, “There is no insinuation against the pilot even in the preliminary probe report.”It also issued a notice to Centre and directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA) on the plea of the father of pilot Sumeet Sabharwal. The statement from SC came as it was hearing a petition by Pushkaraj Sabharwal, whose son Sumeet Sabharwal was the pilot-in-command of the Air India flight. While hearing the plea, Justice Surya Kant told the father, “This crash was extremely unfortunate, but you should not carry this burden that your son is being blamed.”The petitions were filed after aircraft accident investigation bureau (AAIB) in its preliminary report mentioned that the fuel supply to both engines was cut off shortly after takeoff.
