‘We are one but …’: Sharad Pawar breaks silence on grandnephew’s land deal row NEW DELHI: NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar on Saturday addressed the controversy surrounding his grandnephew Parth Pawar’s alleged involvement in a Pune land deal, saying, “as a family we are one, but divided ideologically.””As a family, we (Pawars) are one, but we are divided ideologically. One of my grandnephews contested against Ajit Pawar, and Ajit Pawar’s wife contested against my daughter,” Pawar told reporters, emphasising the separation between administration, politics, and family. The remarks come amid a political uproar over the alleged illegal sale of around 40 acres of government land in Pune’s Mundhwa area, valued at approximately Rs 1,800 crore. Opposition parties have accused a company linked to deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar’s son, Parth, of acquiring the land for just Rs 300 crore, allegedly with a stamp duty waiver. Ajit Pawar has denied any involvement in the transaction.Further supporting Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis’s call for an investigation, Sharad Pawar said he was in favour of a transparent probe. “The chief minister has said publicly that the matter is serious. So he should conduct a probe and put the facts before society,” he said.Fadnavis earlier said that FIRs had been filed against the signatories and vendors involved in the deal. “Those found guilty in the probe will be booked. Action is being taken as per the law,” he said in Gadchiroli. When asked whether Ajit Pawar was being politically targeted by allies within the ruling Mahayuti alliance, the veteran leader said, “I wouldn’t know.”Pawar also appeared to distance himself from his daughter and NCP MP Supriya Sule’s remarks defending Parth. Sule had earlier said she did not believe Parth “would do anything wrong.” Responding to that, Pawar said, “This could be her view.”Looking ahead, the NCP (SP) chief said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies would meet to finalise their strategy for the upcoming local body elections. “We (NCP-SP) are meeting tomorrow to decide our strategy and consider inducting new partners,” he said, hinting at possible coordination with Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena.”If a good alternative emerges through consensus in MVA, the Congress should not take an extreme stance on the MNS and should think about it,” he added.Pawar also criticised the state government for neglecting farmers affected by unseasonal rains, calling its loan waiver announcement “deceptive”.He further reminded the government of Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy of protecting farmers, saying, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s kingdom comprised hardworking people and farmers. Shivaji Maharaj always took care of farmers. However, this is not happening now.””The help announced by the government has not yet reached many farmers. The loan waiver announcement seems like a fraud,” he added.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Delhi’s air quality has entered the ‘red zone’ with AQI crossing 400, making it the country’s second most polluted city. Despite hazardous levels in several areas, Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 3 has not been enforced due to comparatively better air quality this November than last year, attributed to coordinated pollution control measures. Image credit: AP NEW DELHI: The national capital on Saturday entered the “red zone” after the air quality index (AQI) crossed 400-mark, making the situation adverse for Delhiites and the citizens in the national capital region. With a 24-hour average AQI of 361, Delhi became the country’s second most polluted city, according to CPCB data. Several areas, including Wazirpur (420), Burari (418), and Vivek Vihar (411), recorded “severe” pollution levels, while most others hovered in the ‘very poor’ range. In the NCR, Noida (354), Greater Noida (336), and Ghaziabad (339) also reported hazardous air, underscoring the region’s worsening smog crisis. The air quality early warning system for Delhi has forecast that the city’s air will stay in the ‘very poor’ category for the coming days. Since Diwali, the capital’s air quality has largely hovered between ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’, at times deteriorating to ‘severe’ levels. Why GRAP 3 not yet enforced?Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) stage 3 has not been enforced yet because, according to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), the city’s air quality this November has remained comparatively better than the same period last year. Officials said that pollution levels have not yet reached the severe threshold that would trigger Stage 3 restrictions. They credited this improvement to timely and coordinated actions across departments, including intensified dust control, road cleaning, anti-smog operations, and stricter checks on vehicles and industrial emissions, which have helped delay the need for harsher measures.”Out of the last seven days, six have recorded better air quality than the corresponding days last year. This has been possible because of timely and coordinated action taken across departments,” PTI quoted an official saying.”Last year, GRAP Stage 3 was imposed on November 13. This time, with support from all departments and the residents of Delhi, we hope to prevent reaching that stage,” the official said.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that ‘ease of justice’ is crucial for ease of living and doing business, ensuring accessibility for all citizens. He highlighted the government’s efforts in faster, inclusive justice delivery through Lok Adalats and the legal aid defence counsel system, resolving millions of disputes and aiding marginalized sections. PM Modi addressing the event (ANI) NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that ensuring the “ease of justice” is essential for achieving both ease of living and ease of doing business, emphasising that justice must be accessible to every citizen, irrespective of social or financial background.Speaking at the national conference on strengthening legal aid delivery mechanisms organised by the national legal services authority (NALSA) at the Supreme Court, Modi said the government has taken several steps to make justice delivery faster and more inclusive in recent years and will further accelerate the process.“Justice must be available to everyone; ease of justice is a must to ensure ease of living and ease of doing business,” the Prime Minister said. Adding, “we have taken several steps to improve ease of justice in recent years; we’ll further accelerate this process.”Highlighting the importance of legal aid and dispute resolution, PM Modi said, “legal aid plays a vital role in ensuring that justice is accessible to all. I am satisfied that today, through Lok Adalats and pre-litigation settlements, millions of disputes are being resolved quickly, amicably, and at low cost. Under the legal aid defence counsel system initiated by the government of India, nearly 800,000 criminal cases have been resolved in just three years.”He added that these initiatives have helped deliver justice to the “poor, Dalits, oppressed, exploited, and deprived sections of the country.”Stressing that social justice can only be achieved when justice reaches everyone, PM noted that the “language of law should be one that is understood by those seeking justice.” He said judgments and legal documents should be made available in local languages and commended the Supreme Court for taking significant steps in this direction, “when people understand law in their own language, it leads to better compliance and fewer lawsuits,” he said. The Prime Minister also launched the community mediation training module prepared by NALSA, noting that mediation has “always been a part of our civilisation” and that the new mediation act reflects India’s long-standing tradition of amicable dispute resolution in a modern form.He further underlined the role of technology in expanding access to justice, describing the e-Courts Project as a key example of how digital tools are improving inclusion and efficiency in the legal system. The two-day NALSA conference will deliberate on key components of India’s legal aid architecture, including the legal aid defence counsel system, para-legal volunteers, permanent Lok Adalats, and financial management of legal services institutions. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has dismissed the BJP’s claims of winning over 160 seats in the Bihar Assembly elections. He stated that the people will decide the final outcome. Kharge also questioned the ruling alliance’s failure to address law and order issues and illegal infiltration. Union home minister Amit Shah had earlier projected a sweeping victory for the NDA. Mallikarjun Kharge (ANI) NEW DELHI: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday dismissed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) claims of securing over 160 seats in the ongoing Bihar Assembly elections, asserting that the final verdict will rest with the people, not political slogans or data projections.“We have faith in the people. We know where they get their data and figures from. Earlier as well, they gave a slogan of 400 paar and whatnot. But we have faith only in the people. People will do justice and decide what’s best for them,” Kharge said, responding to the NDA’s claim of a sweeping victory.Taking aim at the NDA’s frequent use of the “jungle raj” narrative against the opposition, Kharge questioned why the BJP-led alliance had failed to curb law and order issues or illegal infiltration despite being in power for years.“Jungle Raj and all these things are old issues. Why did they not end jungleraj in 20 years? Why didn’t they push out infiltrators? This is a failure of the central government and the state government. I want to call out their double-engine government for this failure,” he said.Kharge’s remarks came soon after Union home minister Amit Shah told a rally in Purnea that the NDA would win “over 160 seats” in the 243-member assembly. Shah has been leading the BJP’s campaign across Bihar, highlighting, according to him, infrastructure growth, improved law and order, and social welfare measures under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Nitish Kumar.Shah has repeatedly warned voters against a possible return of “jungle raj” under a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led government, accusing the RJD-Congress alliance of prioritising family interests over governance. He has cited incidents of violence, kidnapping, and extortion during the RJD’s previous tenure to back his charge. The NDA campaign has centred around themes of development, security, and regional pride, while the opposition bloc, including the Congress and RJD, has sought to counter the allegations with price rise, unemployment, and failure of the so-called “double-engine” government. The first phase of the Bihar elections this week recorded a 65.08 per cent voter turnout, the highest in the state’s electoral history. The second phase of polling for 122 seats will take place on November 11, with results scheduled for November 14.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Prashant Kishor asserts Bihar’s record voter turnout signals a strong desire for change, challenging the NDA’s narrative. He claims Prime Minister Modi is using fear tactics against the RJD due to a lack of substantive offerings. Kishor highlights migrant workers shifting support, seeking jobs and factories within the state, not just infrastructure. NEW DELHI: Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor has claimed that the unusually high voter turnout in the Bihar assembly elections is a direct sign that “winds of change” are blowing in the state. Kishor further claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attempting to “instil fear” to retain power because the NDA has “nothing else to offer”.Addressing supporters in Supaul, the Jan Suraaj founder said analysts had been confidently predicting the outcome, but “no one predicted that Bihar would have the highest voter turnout in the country’s political history”. He argued that the scale of voting shows voters are seeking an alternative after decades of the same politics. “The sheer number of polls shows that change is definitely coming in Bihar,” he said.Jan Suraaj Party’s Prashant Kishor Drops Bombshell, Reveals Why He Will Not Contest Bihar ElectionsKishor, whose party is contesting more than 200 seats in its electoral debut, framed the high participation as evidence that voters are rejecting fear-based appeals. “The PM is trying to get votes by instilling fear of the RJD because he has nothing else to say,” he said. “If you’re saying Jungle Raj shouldn’t return, then why should you? Jan Suraaj is the new alternative.”The first phase of polling on 121 seats saw a turnout of about 65%, significantly higher than both the 2020 assembly elections (57.29%) and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls (56.28%). Officials said this marked the highest voter participation since Independence.Kishor claimed that high turnout shows people are voting against fear, not because of it. “More than 60% of Bihar’s population wants change,” he said. “After Jan Suraaj came, people got an alternative. People have given their vote for change.”He also accused the ruling alliance of failing to provide jobs within the state, forcing workers to migrate. According to Kishor, migrant workers who traditionally voted for the NDA had shifted their support. “Earlier, the migrant workers were voting for the NDA… Today they are not. They want factories and jobs in Bihar,” he said, criticising Home Minister Amit Shah for claiming there was no land available for industries. “So if you want to build roads and national highways, then there is land in Bihar, but if you want to build factories for the children of Bihar, then there is no land here?”PM Modi, addressing rallies in Aurangabad and Kaimur, claimed the turnout reflected “trust in the track record of Narendra and Nitish”. He warned that voters would reject the RJD, which he accused of bringing “jungle raj”, and repeatedly used the phrase “katta sarkar”, alleging the opposition encouraged gun violence.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mocked Rahul Gandhi’s fishing attempt and attacked the RJD’s “Jungle Raj” legacy at a Bihar rally. He highlighted the NDA’s development agenda, contrasting it with the RJD’s alleged promotion of crime and corruption among youth, urging voters to choose progress over the past. NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday took a veiled jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his recent fishing attempt in Begusarai, saying while Bihar’s fishery sector has grown under the NDA government, “some people are now practising diving in ponds in the state.” “The fishery sector saw huge growth in Bihar, but now some people are practising diving in ponds in the state,” PM Modi said at a public rally in Sitamarhi, drawing laughter from the crowd in an apparent reference to Rahul Gandhi’s viral video. The comment set the tone for a combative speech in which the Prime Minister targeted both the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). “Bade bade log bhi yahan ki macchli dekhne aa rahe hain. Paani mein dubki laga rahe hain… Bihar ke election mein doobne ki practice kar rahe hain,” PM Modi quipped, extending his mockery of Rahul Gandhi’s Begusarai outing. PM Modi’s remarks came a day after Rahul Gandhi made headlines for his impromptu visit to a pond in Bharra village of Begusarai, where he joined local fishermen in catching fish following an election rally. Rahul Gandhi was accompanied by Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar and Vikassheel Insaan Party chief Mukesh Sahani. After addressing the public meeting, Rahuk Gandhi travelled about 3 km to the pond, boarded a small boat to meet fishermen, and later jumped into the water alongside Kanhaiya, drawing cheers from villagers. Even his SPG personnel waded in to ensure his safety as he helped pull in fishing nets and interacted with locals. During the Sitamarhi rally, PM Modi also described himself as a “brand ambassador of Bihar’s art,” saying he had recently gifted a Madhubani painting to Argentina’s Vice President as a tribute to the state’s cultural legacy. “Those who insult our culture and tradition must be punished electorally,” he said. Targeting the RJD, PM Modi said its campaign exposed its attitude toward Bihar’s youth. “What does RJD want to do for the children of Bihar is clearly visible in their election campaign. Listen to the songs and slogans of the Jungle Raj people. You will be shocked. On RJD’s stages, innocent children are being made to say that they want to become extortionists. Should a child of Bihar become an extortionist or a doctor?… Will we let them win who want our children to be extortionists?” he said. PM Modi further said that voters had already given a clear message in the earlier phase of polling. “In the first phase of the elections, the people of Bihar… The people of Jungle Raj got a ‘65 volt jhatka’,” he remarked, suggesting that the opposition had been rejected. Contrasting the NDA’s focus on growth with what he termed RJD’s legacy of crime, PM Modi said, “In Bihar, it’s fashionable to come here with a pistol and say, ‘Hands up’… Now, there’s no place in Bihar for those who say ‘Hands up’… Bihar needs ‘startup’, not ‘Hands up’.” Highlighting youth empowerment, he added, “We’re giving children books, computers, and laptops. Our children want to excel in sports… But the RJD is talking about giving pistols and double-barreled guns. These people want to make their own children ministers, MPs, MLAs, and Chief Ministers.” The Sitamarhi rally was part of PM Modi’s wider campaign tour across Bihar ahead of the final phases of polling, where he has sought to frame the contest as a choice between “development and Jungle Raj.”About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. NEW DELHI: The net deletion of around 47 lakh electors from Bihar’s rolls during the special intensive revision (SIR) and the consequent shrinking of the state’s voter base to 7.4 crore is among factors that may have pushed up Phase 1 polling percentage to record levels, EC officials said.Officers attribute the rise partly to better voter connect achieved through house-to-house visits by booth level officers (BLOs) and parties’ booth level agents (BLAs) to distribute and collect forms. Opposition protests against SIR, including Rahul Gandhi’s ‘voter adhikaar’ yatra, also ensured the Bihar poll campaign began early. “The sharp divisions over SIR created a high level of contestation, generating public interest and encouraging electors to vote,” said an officer.Interestingly, the difference between Bihar’s Phase 1 turnout and its 2024 Lok Sabha turnout-8.4 percentage points-nearly matches the 8.7% deletions from the June 2025 roll that listed 7.9 crore electors.Officials said it’s hard to assess how much SIR deletions contributed to higher turnout. “SIR eliminated bogus entries – of dead, shifted or ineligible – which earlier enabled impersonation,” said an EC officer. They added that EC’s resolve in conducting SIR exercise amid criticism, and high media scrutiny motivated voters to turn up in large numbers.About the AuthorBharti JainBharti Jain is senior editor with The Times of India, New Delhi. NEW DELIH: Delhi airport on Saturday said that the operations are returning back to normal a day after a glitch in Air Traffic Control flight planning process caused over 300 flight delays. While issuing a advisory, Indira Gandhi International Airport asked the passengers to stay in touch with their airlines for the latest flight update.”The technical issue which affected the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), that supports the Air Traffic Control flight planning process, is gradually improving,” the advisory read.”Airline operations at Delhi Airport are returning to normal, and all concerned authorities are working diligently to minimise any inconvenience caused. Passengers are advised to stay in touch with their airlines for the latest flight update,” it added. The glitch occurred in the AMSS system that prompted the ATC to abandon automation and switch to manual procedures. The slowdown began showing network-wide effects from Thursday afternoon.Air traffic control (ATC) refers to a ground-based service in which controllers manage and guide the movement of aircraft both on the ground and within controlled airspace. As India’s busiest hub, IGIA typically manages about 1,500 aircraft movements a day with peak rates near 60–70 per hour in normal conditions, leaving little slack when automation falters. The problem started at the Automatic Message Switching System, a system responsible for transferring the flight plan data to the air traffic controllers’ screens, which crashed. This caused the controllers to process each data manually, significantly delaying the arrival and departure process. The disruption that began to impact the operations since Thursday 3pm, had been occurring since Wednesday evening.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
