The party cannot even tolerate basic civility and courtesies being extended in public life.”Congress vs Congress: Tharoor’s Essay Triggers Storm, BJP Adds Fuel With Jibe Kesavan further said there was “deep-rooted insecurity” in the “Congress first” family and the Nehru-Gandhi lineage as the driving force behind the party’s current meltdown. He added that Tharoor was not alone in voicing such sentiments. “Many Congress leaders feel stifled and suffocated under the undeserved leadership of the ‘Congress first’ family. The Congress party only possesses an emergency prejudiced, intolerant mindset,” Kesavan said.BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also hit out at the Congress, alleging that the party was showing its “Emergency-era mindset.” He said, “The Congress should rename itself from the ‘Indian National Congress’ to the ‘Indira Nazi Congress’ because this reflects Indira Gandhi’s Emergency-style behaviour. For a politically correct birthday wish extended to stalwart Bharat Ratna Advani by Shashi Tharoor, the party has effectively issued a ‘fatwa’ against him. This shows Congress’s intolerance. They can’t even stand their own MP extending political courtesy.” The controversy started when Tharoor wished Advani on his birthday on Saturday, calling him a “true statesman whose life of service has been exemplary.” The post drew immediate backlash online, with critics accusing Tharoor of whitewashing Advani’s role in divisive politics. Lawyer Sanjay Hegde, in an indirect reference to Advani’s role in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, said, “Sorry, Mr Tharoor, unleashing the dragon seeds of hatred (to quote Khushwant Singh) in this country is not public service.”Responding to the criticism, Tharoor said, “Reducing his long years of service to one episode, however significant, is also unfair.” He compared this to Congress leaders, saying, “The totality of Nehruji’s career cannot be judged by the China setback, nor Indira Gandhi’s by the Emergency alone. The same courtesy should be extended to Advani ji.” Congress quickly distanced itself. Party spokesperson Pawan Khera said on X, “Like always, Dr Shashi Tharoor speaks for himself and Congress outrightly dissociates itself from his most recent statement.” “That he continues to do so as a Congress MP and CWC member reflects the essential democratic and liberal spirit unique to INC,” he added. This is not the first time Tharoor has praised leaders across party lines, which has occasionally put him at odds with Congress. ![Aaditya Thackeray MUMBAI: Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray Sunday complained about a drone “peeping” into Matoshree, the heavily guarded residence he shares with party chief Uddhav Thackeray and his mother at Bandra’s Kalanagar, raising concerns about potential surveillance. MMRDA and police clarified that the drone was part of a survey being conducted for the proposed pod taxi service in the area, but Aaditya asked why residents weren’t informed beforehand. “A drone was caught peeping into our residence [on Sunday] morning and when the media learnt about it, MMRDA said it was a survey being done for BKC with police permission,” Aaditya said on X. “What survey allows you to peep inside homes and fly out quickly when spotted? Why weren’t residents informed? Is MMRDA only doing surveillance of our house?” He said MMRDA “should rather get on the ground and focus on its own work, like the MTHL (Atal Setu), which is an example of its corruption.” In response, MMRDA said the drone survey was conducted over the weekend along the approved pod taxi alignment-from Kurla to Bandra via BKC-to facilitate a visual study of the corridor. “All necessary permissions were obtained by MMRDA on behalf of the concessionaire from the police department, and every instruction issued by them was strictly adhered to,” it said on X. It said the certified drone operator, whose background verification was already submitted to the authorities, carried out the survey in the presence of police personnel and concessionaire officials. “The operation remained fully compliant and restricted to the approved alignment, with no breach or deviation at any stage.” DCP (zone 8) Manish Kalwaniya confirmed that all permissions were in place. Sena (UBT) MLC Anil Parab, however, demanded a detailed police inquiry. “[The drone] raises serious concerns about a potential security breach in a high-security zone,” he said. Uddhav recently visited Marathwada region and interacted with farmers affected by heavy rain and floods over the last few months. He has targeted CM Devendra Fadnavis over the relief package announced by the state govt and stressed the opposition’s demand for Rs 50,000 per hectare compensation for crop losses and a complete farm loan waiver.
