The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Friday called out the BJP-led Delhi government for insulting dalits by choosing to install portraits of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Madan Mohan Malaviya in the Delhi assembly on the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, instead of honouring the pioneering social reformer herself, AAP said in a press release. AAP Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj and Kondli MLA Kuldeep Kumar emphasised that the government not only failed to acknowledge a dalit icon who laid the foundation of women’s education in India, but also went a step further by initiating a privilege breach case against MLAs who raised the demand, calling it a clear reflection of the BJP’s anti-dalit mindset.During a press conference, AAP Delhi state president Saurabh Bhaadwaj stated, “It is a very strange thing that on the birth anniversary of Mata Savitribai Phule, portraits of Pandit Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya are being installed. If even a Dalit icon’s portrait had been installed today, we could have struck a blow against the stigma of casteism that has existed for thousands of years. But the Delhi government missed this opportunity and instead installed portraits of two Brahmins. When it comes to installing the portrait of a Dalit icon, they face so much discomfort that they initiated a privilege breach case against MLAs, some of whom are Dalits and from the AAP.”Meanwhile, AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar said, “A few days ago, a meeting was held in which we placed a proposal before the Assembly committee. Our MLAs said that Mata Savitribai Phule, whose birth anniversary is today, who opened the first school for women in this country, who faced immense atrocities yet never stopped educating women, should have her portrait installed inside the Delhi Assembly. I say this with great sadness that to suppress our voice, they initiated a privilege breach motion against our members, including against me personally, but they did not install Mata Savitribai Phule’s portrait there. Because she spoke about educating women. He said the accused initially walked away. But hours later, around 4 am, when Subroto stepped out to a tea stall, he spotted Zuber there again.By 4.30 am, as he returned to his duty post, a sense of unease set in. Zuber was following him!Before he could react, the accused allegedly pulled out a knife, grabbed Subroto by the arm, and lunged. Subroto tried to fight back, but not before suffering a knife injury.In a desperate bid to escape, he pushed the attacker away and ran towards his supervisor Rajkumar Mishra’s cabin.”However, Zuber entered the cabin as well. Mishra was seated on a chair inside. Before I could explain the situation or he could comprehend what was happening, Zuber — upon seeing Mishra — immediately demanded, ‘You are a Hindu too, aren’t you? If not, recite the Kalma’. Mishra was unable to recite the Kalma. Following this, Zuber began repeatedly stabbing him with the knife. Being seated in the chair, Mishra was unable to defend himself effectively,” Subroto said.Fearing for his life, Subroto fled towards the back of the building. After some time, when the situation appeared to calm down, he called Mishra’s mobile phone. Mishra answered and, in distress, pleaded, “I’m going to die! I’m going to die! Please save me!”According to police officials, the accused approached the guards stationed at an under-construction building near Wockhardt Hospital in the early hours of Monday, around 4.00 am. He reportedly asked them to recite the Kalma, an important Islamic declaration of faith, before launching the attack.Ansari has been taken into custody in connection with the attack, during which he allegedly questioned the victims about their religious identity before assaulting them with a knife, in what investigators suspect could be a lone wolf-style incident by a radicalised individual.The victims, Rajkumar Mishra and Subroto Sen, suffered serious injuries and were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Mishra managed to reach the hospital on his own despite his condition, while Sen was helped by a local resident, Nayab Sheikh.Police moved swiftly after the attack, scanning CCTV footage from the area to trace the suspect. Ansari was tracked down and apprehended within roughly 90 minutes. He was later taken to Naya Nagar Police Station, where a case was registered against him under charges including attempted murder and promoting enmity between communities.Following his arrest, Ansari was produced before a court in Thane, which remanded him to police custody until May 4.The probe has since widened, with local police working alongside the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, have unanimously supported this Bill,” he said.Arya further stated, “We want the same for the coming Uttarakhand Assembly elections in 2027, but the central government is delaying the implementation of the Bill.”The special session comes in the backdrop of national-level discussions on the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill related to women’s reservation and delimitation, which was taken up in the Lok Sabha on April 17.In the division that took place on the Constitution Amendment Bill, 298 members voted in favour and 230 against. With the Constitution Amendment Bill defeated, the government later said it did not want to pursue the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, which were taken up together for discussion.The Bills aimed to increase the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to 816, with 33 per cent reservation for women. NEW DELHI: The Indian Overseas Bank has issued an official statement after a man in Odisha exhumed and brought his deceased sister’s remains to a branch in Keonjhar district on 27 April, in an attempt to withdraw money from her account, amid reports alleging misconduct by bank officials.In its clarification, the bank issued clarification on the incident at the Malliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank, a sponsored Regional Rural BankThe statement said, “Contrary to certain media reports, bank officials did not demand the physical presence of a deceased customer for withdrawal,” adding that procedures were followed in line with banking regulations.According to the bank, the man, identified as Jitu Munda, had approached the branch seeking to withdraw funds from an account held in the name of his sister, Kalara Munda. Officials informed him that third-party withdrawals were not permitted without proper authorisation. When he stated that the account holder was deceased, the branch manager explained that claims could only be settled upon submission of valid documents, including a death certificate.The bank further stated that the individual, “who was in an inebriated condition, became disruptive and later returned with human remains, reportedly exhumed after being buried a few days earlier, placing them in front of the branch and claiming it to be his sister while demanding withdrawal from her account”. It described the situation as “highly distressing” and said local police were immediately informed.Police reached the spot after being alerted by bank staff. The man later removed the remains and reburied them following discussions with officers.Offering its assessment of the episode, the bank said the incident appeared to stem from a lack of awareness about the claim settlement process and the individual’s refusal to accept the procedures explained to him. It added that there was “no case of any harassment” and that its intention was to safeguard the account holder’s money.“The bank is also in continuous coordination with local authorities for issuance of the death certificate.
