NEW DELHI: Nida Khan, an accused in the Nashik TCS case, has been taken into custody from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar in Maharashtra, police said on Thursday.Khan was wanted in the case of alleged sexual harassment and forcible religious conversion at the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).The court had earlier rejected her anticipatory bail. According to the FIR, Khan advised women employees to “dress and behave in accordance with Islamic traditions.” She had sought pre-arrest bail citing her pregnancy.According to Nashik Police, Khan was apprehended by police teams in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as part of the ongoing investigation into the case, news agency ANI reported. “Nida Khan, one of the accused in the Nashik TCS case, has been taken into custody from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. NEW DELHI: FSSAI has seized stocks of a branded “alkaline water” product worth over Rs 31 lakh after laboratory tests found the presence of fulvic acid, a substance not permitted in packaged drinking water under current food safety norms. The action followed a consumer complaint filed through the Food Safety Connect portal, after which officials inspected the company’s manufacturing unit in Savli, Gujarat. During the inspection, food safety officers found several irregularities, including missing ingredient details, absence of the product name on the front label and visible black particles inside the bottles. Officials also reported sediment deposits and unexplained blackish-brown colouring in the product. Subsequent laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of fulvic acid, which investigators said came from added black mineral substances and was not naturally present in the water. . NEW DELHI: At least six in every 10 road crash victims in India in 2024 were two-wheeler riders/pedestrians, according to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). An analysis of four years of data shows a steady rise in both the share and number of two-wheeler riders and pedestrians killed in crashes, amid govt’s focus on making cars safer.NCRB data for 2024 show that more than 1.1 lakh deaths — 64% of total 1.75 lakh road fatalities — were of two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. The data also show that the share of pedestrians killed in road crashes has surpassed that of car occupants, making pedestrians the second-most affected category of road users after two-wheeler riders. The trend highlights the low priority given to pedestrian safety in development of the country’s road network.At 15.1%, car occupants accounted for the second-highest share (23,531) of road deaths in 2021. However, in 2022, the number of pedestrians killed reached 24,742, exceeding the number of car occupants killed, and the trend has continued over the past three years. In 2024, pedestrian fatalities stood at 25,769, second only to two-wheeler rider deaths, which were at 84,599.Road safety experts across the world, including in India, have urged policymakers to focus more on safety of motorised two-wheelers, which remain the most affordable and convenient mode of private transport for millions. They account for almost three-fourths of all vehicles.Maximum deaths due to two-wheeler crashes were reported in Tamil Nadu (11,786) and Uttar Pradesh (8,575).As per the report, a majority of road crashes (61.2%) were due to overspeeding, accounting for a little more than one lakh fatalities. . NEW DELHI: At least six in every 10 road crash victims in India in 2024 were two-wheeler riders/pedestrians, according to the latest report of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). An analysis of four years of data shows a steady rise in both the share and number of two-wheeler riders and pedestrians killed in crashes, amid govt’s focus on making cars safer.NCRB data for 2024 show that more than 1.1 lakh deaths — 64% of total 1.75 lakh road fatalities — were of two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. The data also show that the share of pedestrians killed in road crashes has surpassed that of car occupants, making pedestrians the second-most affected category of road users after two-wheeler riders. The trend highlights the low priority given to pedestrian safety in development of the country’s road network.At 15.1%, car occupants accounted for the second-highest share (23,531) of road deaths in 2021. However, in 2022, the number of pedestrians killed reached 24,742, exceeding the number of car occupants killed, and the trend has continued over the past three years. In 2024, pedestrian fatalities stood at 25,769, second only to two-wheeler rider deaths, which were at 84,599.Road safety experts across the world, including in India, have urged policymakers to focus more on safety of motorised two-wheelers, which remain the most affordable and convenient mode of private transport for millions. They account for almost three-fourths of all vehicles.Maximum deaths due to two-wheeler crashes were reported in Tamil Nadu (11,786) and Uttar Pradesh (8,575).As per the report, a majority of road crashes (61.2%) were due to overspeeding, accounting for a little more than one lakh fatalities. It is not for want of roads or rails but for want of systems that work together.“The solutions are not unknown. London, Stockholm, and Singapore have demonstrated that congestion pricing, combined with strong public transport, can reduce traffic by 20-30%. The knowledge exists. The technology exists. What, then, is the cultural barrier?” the CAG asked as he recounted how we build metro lines that don’t connect to bus networks, we build flyovers that merely shift congestion.The CAG was speaking at the inaugural of a two-day meeting of federal auditors of BRICS nations in Bengaluru, where participating countries included China, Russia, Brazil, South Africa and UAE. He said if substantial capital expenditure fails to reduce average commute times, it is not an infrastructure deficit we are looking at, it is a governance failure.“We are conducting a special audit of 101 Indian cities, assessing Ease of Living from the citizen’s perspective, across quality of life, access, sustainability, and perception. And we are auditing multi-modal transport and first-mile, last-mile logistics, in partnership with institutions like IIT and IIM, and with the World Bank,” CAG shared his work with audit heads of BRICS countries.Murthy recalled a quote from former President APJ Abdul Kalam, saying “a vision without action is merely a dream and action without accountability is merely expenditure. The accountability is ours to provide.” He said the auditors play an important role in providing useful information and inputs for effective governance.“In the era of ease of living, we must ask a deeper question: Did spending change lives? A city can build a hundred flyovers and still fail its citizens.
