NEW DELHI: Congress on Wednesday extended its support to actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK after emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, but failed to cross the majority mark.In a letter, the party which won 5 seats in the 243-membered assembly, said that its support will be conditional upon the TVK keeping out from this alliance any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India.”The President of Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Thiru C Vijay, has formally requested the Indian National Congress (INC) to extend its support for forming a government in Tamil Nadu. The people of Tamil Nadu, especially the youth, have delivered a very clear, strong and overwhelming verdict for a secular, progressive and welfarist government that believes in constitutional principles. There have also been reports that these MLAs are not too happy with Edappadi Palaniswami’s leadership.TVK, which stands at 108 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly and is just 10 short of the 118 halfway majority mark, is more likely to ally with smaller parties like Congress and the Left front.TVK MLAs lodged at luxury resortMeanwhile, 108 victorious TVK MLAs, including those from distant regions, have been housed in a private luxury resort in Mamallapuram on Wednesday.The arrangement comes after a meeting with party leader Vijay. To ensure security, a heavy police presence has been deployed around the resort, with increased surveillance in place.Over 50 MLAs are currently staying at the Four Points Star hotel in Poonjeri, Mamallapuram, and more TVK MLAs are expected to arrive through the day. NEW DELHI: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK has put the wheels in motion to form the government in Tamil Nadu, as it emerged as the single-largest party but fell short of crossing the majority mark by 10 seats.Reportedly, TVK is seeking backing from smaller parties such as Congress, PMK, Left parties, CPM, and VCK, which together could help the party cross the majority mark.TVK chief Vijay also sought time from Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar to meet him as part of the process for government formation.Here is what’s happening in Tamil Nadu:Congress jumps ship?News agency PTI, citing sources, reported that the Tamil Nadu Congress has decided to support the formation of a secular government in the state. Rahul Gandhi, Vijay, Stalin NEW DELHI: Cracks within the INDIA bloc came into sharp focus after the Tamil Nadu verdict, as the MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam lashed out at its ally, Congress, for backing actor-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The DMK termed the Congress’ move “backstabbing,” signalling serious strain within the opposition alliance.DMK joint secretary and spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai called its INDIA bloc ally Congress’ step “foolhardy decision” and driven by the need to “satisfy a few egos.”Defending the DMK’s past support to Congress, he invoked party supremo Stalin’s backing of Rahul Gandhi. He said, “In 2016, the Congress got a good number of seats, though it was not proportionate to the seats that were allocated to them. The BJP-RSS was mocking Rahul Gandhi, calling him names. At that time, our leader, MK Stalin, made Rahul Gandhi the prime ministerial candidate, which was a bold move. From then onwards, Rahul Gandhi’s graph rose in 2024… It is all the hard work of the DMK on the ground, the resources of the DMK party on the ground, and that is why they were able to pull off these five seats. I call this a foolhardy decision. The TVK, of course, needs 11 seats to cross the majority mark. The AIADMK, with 47 seats, is willing to offer unconditional support. If you are Vijay, to whom will you listen? Someone with five seats or someone with 43 seats? So the Congress, I think, had made a very bad decision. They say they want to keep the BJP and the RSS at bay, and that is why this call should be made… This is a full-hearted decision by the Congress, which is likely to send ripples across the country in the sense that there are other alliance partners. If Congress is going to be so untrustworthy, just within a day of the results, they are openly going against the mandate. What impact will it create in the minds of Akhilesh Yadav, Tejashwi Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray and all the others?
