J-K Op underway NEW DELHI: A terrorist was killed on Wednesday evening during an ongoing anti-terror operation in the Kishtwar region of Jammu and Kashmir, the officials said. The encounter took place under Operation ‘Trashi-I’, as security forces continued their search for terrorists hiding in the area. In a post on X, the Army’s White Knight Corps said contact was re-established with terrorists on the run at around 5.45 pm in the Dichhar area of Kishtwar.”In the continuing search and elimination of terrorists in the Kishtwar region, where the hunt has already led to several contacts in the dense forests and challenging terrain, contact was re-established with the terrorists on the run in the ongoing joint Operation Trashi-I by the troops of Counter-Insurgency Force Delta, White Knight Corps, J&K Police and CRPF at around 5.45 pm today in the general area of Dichhar, Kishtwar,” the post said.”One terrorist has been successfully neutralised. Operation is in progress,” it added. Security forces said the operation is continuing in the area. This was the fifth encounter in the Chatroo belt over the past 18 days, as the Army and police continue to hunt a group of terrorists affiliated with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit, PTI reported.Officials said the latest encounter began when a joint search party was conducting operations in Sanjinala-Dichhar in the Chingam forest.Operation ‘Kiya’: Two terrorists killed in UdhampurIn a separate development, earlier in the day, two Pakistani terrorists including a top commander of JeM were killed after being trapped inside a cave in Udhampur district, officials said. Several powerful blasts were heard when forces stormed the cave around noon. One of the slain terrorists was identified as Rubani alias Abu Mavia, a self-styled top JeM commander active in the area for several years. While one body was found at the mouth of the cave, the other was recovered from deep inside. The terrorists were located by joint teams of the Army, police and CRPF during intensified searches in the higher reaches of the Ramnagar-Basantgarh area around 4 pm on Tuesday, triggering a fierce gunfight. The Army named the over 20-hour-long operation “Kiya”, saying that while the operation has concluded, the area remains under surveillance.”Based on specific intelligence input provided by police, troops of Counter-Intelligence Force Delta, White Knight Corps planned and executed a focused joint counter-terror operation in the general area of Jophar Forest, Basantgarh in coordination with police and CRPF reinforcing the cordon, ensuring effective area domination to prevent escape of terrorists,” the Army’s White Knight Corps had earlier said.”Contact with terrorists was established yesterday and since then, terrorists were prevented from breaking contact. Following a calibrated and coordinated response, two terrorists have been successfully neutralised. The operation highlighted seamless inter-agency coordination, tactical precision and high standards of professionalism,” it added.A large quantity of arms and ammunition, including an M4 carbine and an AK assault rifle, were recovered from the slain terrorists.A series of encounters, three in Kathua district and four in the Chatroo forest belt in Kishtwar, took place in January as part of intensified operations in the upper reaches of the Jammu region. These resulted in the killing of top JeM terrorist Usman of Pakistan in Kathua and the death of a paratrooper in Kishtwar.Usman was part of the same group eliminated in Udhampur and had got separated following the Soan encounter, officials said.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. NEW DELHI: The home ministry on Wednesday told the Rajya Sabha that questions on caste — which is to be captured in the second phase of Census 2027, that is, the population enumeration phase — will be notified along with rest of the questions, “before the commencement of the second phase of the census operation”.“The questions, including on caste, for the second phase will be finalised and notified as per the established procedure,” junior home minister Nityanand Rai said in reply to a written question. Census 2027 To Kick Off As Government Seeks Data On Homes, Food, Internet And How India Lives Today As per records checked by TOI, the questionnaire for population enumeration stage of Census 2011 was notified by the then UPA govt only towards the end of first stage of the census, that is, on Aug 31, 2010.Answering a separate question, Rai on Wednesday shared that though census 2027 will be digital exercise, there will be provision for offline data collection in the mobile apps. “Only in unavoidable circumstances, enumerators may collect data in paper mode and in such a situation the data will be digitised at the charge level itself,’ he clarified. Stating that the digital census will be conducted through mobile apps, census management and monitoring portal and self-enumeration portal, he said enumerators shall undertake house-to-house field visits in their allotted enumeration block for collection of census data. “Provision of self- enumeration is an additional facility for the respondents to submit data. House-to-house visit of enumerator will ensure that there is no exclusion on any ground,” the minister said and assured that all suitable security measures have been provisioned for data collection, transmission and storage. The govt had on June 16, 2025, notified its intent to conduct Census 2027 in two phases, that is, the house listing operation (HLO) phase and population enumeration (PE). On Jan 22, 2026, it notified the questions for the first phase. While house listing operation involves collection of information regarding housing conditions, assets, amenities, etc. of each household in the country, the population enumeration phase captures the demographic, socio- economic, cultural, and other details of each individual. As clearly stated by the govt in a press note dated Dec 12, 2025, caste is to be enumerated in the PE phase, which is due only in February 2027. Despite this, some opposition parties have raised questions on the govt’s intent regarding caste census, asking why the questionnaire for Phase 1 did not list ‘caste’ as a field.About the AuthorBharti JainBharti Jain is senior editor with The Times of India, New Delhi.
