NEW DELHI: Unnao rape case survivor on Monday said that she would ensure “death sentence” for the convict and expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar. She also hailed the Supreme Court’s decision which stayed Delhi HC’s move to suspended life sentence of Sengar.”I am very happy. I had faith in the Supreme Court. I will ensure that he is given a death sentence,” she said speaking to the reporters. Supreme Court Halts Bail For Ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar In Unnao Rape Case, Signals Tough Stand The survivor’s mother has asked for security for her family and advocate saying, “My family needs security. Our advocates need security. I request that the government keep us all safe.”SC stayed a Delhi high court order that had suspended Sengar’s life sentence and granted him bail in the 2017 Unnao rape case.”I am very happy with this decision. I have got justice from the Supreme Court. I have been raising my voice for justice from the very beginning,” PTI quoted the survivor saying.”I do not make any allegations against any court. I have faith in all courts, but the Supreme Court has given me justice and will continue to do so,” she said. The survivor’s mother also welcomed the verdict and said that the SC “has done justice to me.””I want to thank the Supreme Court for this verdict. The Supreme Court has done justice to me. I always used to say that I had faith in the Supreme Court. The two judges of the High Court did us an injustice. They broke my faith in the high court,” she said.Earlier, the high court had put the life imprisonment sentence on hold and allowed Sengar bail while his appeal was pending. Sengar, a former Unnao legislator, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in a case that sparked nationwide outrage and reignited debate over crimes against women and political accountability.”Issue notice. We have heard Solicitor General Tushar Mehta for CBI and Senior Advocate for the convict… Counter will be filed in four weeks. We are conscious of the fact that when a convict or an undertrial has been released, such orders are not ordinarily stayed by this court without hearing such persons. But in view of peculiar facts where the convict is convicted for a separate offence, we stay the operation of the Delhi high court order dated December 23, and thus the respondent shall not be released pursuant to the said order,” ordered the bench. In 2019, a Delhi trial court convicted Sengar of offences under the Indian Penal Code and the Pocso Act, sentencing him to imprisonment for the rest of his natural life. The Unnao rape survivor, who was a minor at the time, was allegedly abducted and sexually assaulted by Sengar between June 11 and 20, 2017. She was later sold and subsequently rescued from the Maakhi police station.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide. Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami DEHRADUN: Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday expressed condolences and assured justice for Tripura student Anjel Chakma’s family, whose death in Dehradun sparked outrage.Dhami spoke with Anjel’s father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, and promised strict action against the perpetrators. “This was a regrettable incident. We will ensure the culprits receive the harshest punishment,” he said. One suspect, a Nepalese national, is on the run, and a reward has been announced for his capture. Dhami assured support, stating, “We are with you in this hour of need. We’ll provide whatever help we can.””Five accused have already been arrested in the case, while another accused is suspected of having fled to Nepal. A reward has been announced, and efforts are underway to arrest the remaining accused,” said Dhami.According to Uttarakhand CMO, the chief minister told Tarun Chakma that Uttarakhand has never had such an atmosphere, as students from across the country and abroad come here to study. Therefore, this incident is distressing for everyone. He further said that after the incident, he spoke with Tripura chief minister Manik Saha, Union home minister Amit Shah, and defence minister Rajnath Singh.MBA student Anjel Chakma was attacked by a group of miscreants with knives and other blunt objects in Dehradun on December 9 and later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital. In a post on X, Manickam Tagore bashed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, blaming the organisation for “spreading daily hate” against other communities, resulting in incidents like the killing of Anjel Chakma.”Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, was racially abused as “Chinese” and “momo”, stabbed in Dehradun, and died after days on a ventilator. This is not an isolated crime. It is the outcome of normalised hate. When RSS and its 2,000+ affiliate outfits spread daily hate against minorities and people from the Northeast, it creates street-level violence. Such hate finds oxygen when the BJP governs a state,” Manickam Tagore said in a post on X.Earlier, members of the Tipra Indigenous Students Federation (TISF), the student wing of Tipra Motha Party, held a candle march at Astabal Maidan in Agartala on Sunday, demanding justice for Anjel Chakma, a student hailing from Nandanagar, Debram Thakur Para, who was killed in Dehradun on December 9.Earlier, Tripura chief minister Manik Saha said his Uttarakhand counterpart, Pushkar Singh Dhami, had assured him that justice would be delivered in the case of a Tripura student.chief minister Saha said that chief minister Dhami has shared details of the case with him and has also spoken to him personally.Superintendent of Police (City) Pramod Kumar provided details of the incident, saying it occurred on the evening of December 9 in the Premnagar police station area of Dehradun.”Two students from Tripura, Anjel Chakma and his brother, Michael Chakma, lived near Nanda Chowki in the Premnagar police station area. This incident happened on the evening of the 9th, when they had gone to Selaqui for some work,” Kumar said.He said the two got into an argument with some local youths and another youth from the Northeast. “A fight broke out between them, during which it is reported that they were attacked with knives and other blunt objects. As a result, they were seriously injured. Their brother took them to the hospital, and subsequently, an FIR was registered,” he added.End of ArticleFollow Us On Social MediaVideosSupreme Court Halts Bail For Ex-BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar In Unnao Rape Case, Signals Tough Stand’Called Chinki, Chinese, Momo’: Tripura Student’s Killing In Dehradun Triggers Protests Across StateBangladesh Faces Political Rupture As Student Leaders Back Jamaat While Minority Attacks ContinueAt Least One Dead After Fire Engulfs 2 Coaches Of Ernakulam Express With 158 On Board In Andhra“Violence Being Used to Stop Polls”: Ex-Spy Lucky Bisht on Bangladesh KillingsOwaisi Urges Protection of Bangladesh Minorities Ahead of February Polls‘Love Jihad Claim False’: UP Woman Speaks Out After Bajrang Dal Crashes BirthdayUnnao Rape Case: Activists Protest Outside Delhi High Court Over Sengar BailShashi Tharoor Responds To Digvijaya Singh, Says Congress Needs Discipline, Not Lessons From RSSPakistan FM Says Islamabad Will Proactively Rebuild Relations With Bangladesh Post Polls123PhotostoriesMumbai’s Bhandup Gets Connectivity Boost as New FOB Eases East–West Pedestrian MovementTop 5 richest cities in India by GDP in 2025Winter Special: How to make Lehsuni Chicken Curry for lunch10 Turkish desserts one must try at least once‘Lokah: Chapter One – Chandra’, ‘Laalo’ to ‘Su From So’: Regional movies that won hearts in 20255 major wedding trends of 2025 that might be seen in 2026 too10 most ordered dishes by Indians in 2025Asthma vs bronchitis: Key differences in symptoms and treatment methods10 countries with the highest number of snake species in the worldHow to make South Indian Spinach Idli for breakfast123Hot PicksSilver price todayPAN-Aadhaar linkingCristiano RonaldoGold rate todayIncome Tax RefundIndian Railways fareBank Holidays DecemberTop TrendingMatt Hardy and Reby Sky Net WorthTravis KelcePatrick MahomesRobert Kraft & Gayle Benson Net WorthAjit PawarLebron JamesWWE Raw PreviewUnnao Rape CaseRajkumar BafnaNew York Yankees

Bhupendra Yadav and Jairam Ramesh (ANI images) NEW DELHI: The Indian National Congress on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court’s directive regarding the redefinition of the Aravalli Hills and demanded the resignation of union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav.Congress leader Jairam Ramesh in a post on X wrote, “In light of this decision, the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change should resign immediately. This ruling dismisses all the arguments they were making in favor of changing the definition.” Aravalli Hills Row: Why Definition Battle Could Decide Mining Water Security And AQI In North IndiaThis comes after the Supreme Court put on hold its earlier decision of November 20, which had accepted the Central Environment Ministry’s definition of the Aravalli Hills and the Aravalli Range. The November order had effectively exposed large parts of the Aravalli region to potential regulated mining and other commercial activities, raising concerns about ecological degradation and loss of natural barriers against desertification.Reacting to the top court’s order, Ramesh further wrote, “The Indian National Congress welcomes the directives issued by the Supreme Court on the Modi government’s attempts to alter the definition of the Aravalli.” The Congress leader also stated that the matter requires further study, highlighting that the proposed changes have already faced opposition from the Forest Survey of India and the Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee. He added that the top court’s order has sparked ‘a ray of hope’. “A more detailed study of this issue will now be conducted. It is essential to remember that the opposition to this new definition had also come from the Forest Survey of India itself, the Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee, and the court’s amicus curiae. For now, this has certainly provided some temporary relief, but the struggle against the Modi government’s conspiracies to open up the Aravalli for mining, real estate, and other activities must be continued relentlessly and with greater strength. Today, the Supreme Court’s directives have sparked a ray of hope, ” Ramesh added. The apex body’s order emphasized that the matter requires a more detailed and comprehensive study. The court observed that earlier expert reports and its own observations had been “misconstrued” in some quarters and directed that a new high-powered committee of domain experts be constituted to conduct a thorough “multi-temporal examination” of the Aravalli Hills and Ranges. This committee will assess the structural and ecological integrity of the hill range, which serves as the only natural barrier preventing the Thar Desert from advancing into the fertile Gangetic plains. The Supreme Court has also issued notices to the Centre and the four states through which the Aravalli range passes Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Delhi seeking their responses in the suo motu case titled In Re: Definition of Aravalli Hills and Ranges and Ancillary Issues.Environmentalists have highlighted that over 1,200 mining leases are currently active in Aravalli districts across Rajasthan, underlining the importance of an independent and detailed review to protect water security, air quality and the overall ecological balance in the region.About the AuthorTOI News DeskThe TOI News Desk comprises a dedicated and tireless team of journalists who operate around the clock to deliver the most current and comprehensive news and updates to the readers of The Times of India worldwide.
